Excellent book! Greg Gilbert does an excellent job introducing you to the historical Jesus, and highlights the importance and relevance of His claims. Highly recommended for skeptics to learn about this historical figure, recommended for new believers to learn about their Savior, and recommended for old saints to be refreshed by a joyful view of their King.

Great book, we used a lot on the Construction Law class at Georgia Tech. We don't totally based on it, so it's very handy to have a proffesor to help understand the different topics.

Promptly came to my door. Brand new book.....no marks... The material itself is easy to retain. ....even for the busy college student. ..

It's the truth...

I took Con Law as part of my graduate course work. The professor wasn't that much of a help. This book basically got me through the course. Well written, using mostly layman's English as opposed to convoluted "legal-ese"

I bought the book for my husband, he thought it was great...even better when he found the tickets to attend the race I had hidden in the book.

On February 22, 1959, more than 100,000 NASCAR fans would anxiously peer out over the Daytona tri-oval awaiting the start of the first Daytona 500 race. Mario Andretti later quipped, "You can't call your career complete unless you put a Daytona win under your belt." Perhaps for many fans, they can't say they've really experienced racing until they've actually made a pilgrimage to Daytona to sit in the stands and watch this "500-mile explosion" in person. The roar and excitement doesn't only come from the stock car engines, it comes from an excited, appreciative audience. The Daytona 500 is the "Super Bowl of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) circuit," a race that owes its origin to racers on the sands of the Daytona and Ormond beaches. It all began with a challenge when Ransom Olds and Alex Winter decided to pit their cars against each other on the beach at Ormond, Florida. The "Pirate" and the "Bullet" may not have come close to hitting the high speeds of cars that would come later, but they were legendary in that they set the stage for generations of racers to come. You'll be able to follow many trailblazers as they raced their cars on the beaches until you meet up with "Big Bill" France, a visionary who would attempt to give some structure to the sport. France "wanted to start an organization to govern stock car racing." By the end of 1947 his dream came true when the organization was formed and rules were agreed upon by the consensus of "35 drivers, mechanics, and businesspeople at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach." NASCAR would soon be up and running. It will almost feel like you're right in the stands watching as you read some interesting vignettes of the sport and hear the crowds go wild as exciting historical stories are recapped. You'll read about the first Daytona 500 wild `n crazy first race, DeWayne "Tiny" Lund's heroism and Cinderella-like chance at winning a race, how Mario Andretti "thrilled the fans and unnerved the other drivers" with his antics on the track, Richard Petty and David Pearson's extreme rivalry, and how "trading paint" ended up in a real time fight between the Allison brothers and Cale Yarborough. After the "wild 1979 finish," which you'll read about in this book, "NASCAR became a truly national sport," one that can now boast millions of fans of all ages and walks of life. As the stakes became higher the drivers began to push their cars to incredible speeds, but soon NASCAR realized the unsafe conditions and implemented restrictor plates that would reduce "horsepower--and speed." In the more recent history of the sport the stories seemed to become more electrifying. You'll read about the Allison family duel in the 1988 Daytona 500, how Wessa Miller rubbed a lucky penny so Dale Earnhardt would win, Michael Waltrip's triumphant win that turned into a tragedy, and how one jobless racer came from behind to win. If all the amazing stories aren't enough you're going to learn about the evolution of the stock car, you'll get to check out the specs of the stock car, and finally get to read about the Thrill and Thunder of the Great American Race! The young reader will get a real taste of the "Thrill and Thunder" of the Daytona 500 in the pages of this book. I've read several books about individual racers and the NASCAR circuit, but this is one of the most interesting by far. The marvelous assortment of stories in this book was what interested me the most as I read about the most obscure figures right along with the more commonly known racers in the sport. I found the overview early history of stock car racing jumpstarted this book very nicely and kept my interest until the last pages. The funky real life characters of Henry Seagrave (Mad Major) and Sir Malcolm Campbell were quite interesting to say the least. The book was very well written and researched and many interviews were conducted in person. There are numerous informative sidebars and ~HOT~ photographs. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary (including slang), an interview with John Andretti, an explanation of the meaning of NASCAR flags, source notes, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. This is a Junior Library Guild Selection. This book courtesy of the publisher.

Okay, I have to admit here...I am not a huge NASCAR fan! In fact, before my 8 year old became completely obsessed with everything NASCAR, I had absolutely no interest in it. However, my son means the world to me so when he started becoming interested in it and wanted my husband and I to watch with him, I did and surprisingly, I enjoyed it!I saw this book on NetGalley and immediately requested it so my son and I could read it together. My son loved the pictures of all the car wrecks! Besides that though, we really enjoyed reading about the history behind the Daytona 500. Did you know that the first Daytona race was actually held on the beach? I certainly didn't! My son loved the "Bullet" car that was one of the first to race in the Daytona (this was, of course, before NASCAR was an event). What I liked most about this book was that it was easy for my 8 year old to listen too or just look at the pictures. He was not bored at all by the book and was thrilled to know all the facts behind the race. In fact, for days after we read the book he told everyone the history behind the Daytona and the "Allison Family Duel" amongst other facts! I liked that it had a glossary in the back so I could understand the different slang that was used (although my son already knew it all) and the interview with John Andretti. The author obviously spent a lot of time researching and included a lot of the fun facts in sidebars. The pictures were amazing and I thought this book was much better than some of the previous ones my son had brought home from the library. My son is constantly asking me to look at the book so he can reread it. I think I am going to have to buy him his own copy!

I have given this book away scores of times. It is the best resource I know of for people in difficult places in life due to family of origin dysfunction/abuse issues. This book jumps to the core origin of the issues and brings much healing if the reader is teachable. It is written by an amazing Christian man. If you or someone you know is in an abusive marriage, is an abuser, is struggling with drugs and or alcohol abuse, tends to always pick unhealthy mates, etc, buy them this book! There is a sister to this book called Angry Men and the Women that Love Them. It is equally amazing. Yes, men can be abused too and the information in that book is very relevant to both sides of the fence no matter the sex. So.... if you are ready to take a hard look as to why you keep finding jerks in your life, bullies, addicts, etc, this book is for you! If you tend to help people stuck in unhealthy cycles, this book is for you, too! If you have an adult friend being abused and just do not know what to say, get them this book. The church sometimes is woefully unprepared to deal with domestic violence and dysfunctional patterns. This book in my opinion should be read by pastors, layleaders, elders, etc. So many would benefit in congregations if leaders had more compassionate insight. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is my go to resource for hurting people in destructive patterns and destructive relationships.

Life Changing, this book has transformed my life, my relationships with God, my children, my family, people who knew me before. What is has done more importantly is it has given me hope. As a man it is a challenge to make yourself vulnerable and say I am weak, I need help, I need God. Because the world will mock you for being so spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally honest. They will spit on you, and try to humiliate you, including your own family. However there is such powerful strength in admitting that you need help as a man. And the blessings that come from it are abundant. I encourage every man as the Watchman for his family, this is a necessary tool to arm yourself with. God's word is the weapon that destroys all the lies, all the pain, all the hurt, this book helps you to see that. Times of refreshing are waiting, for all you men out there contemplating, wait no longer, repentance taste sweeter than the bitterness of lies we eat everyday as wounded men. To God be the Glory.

Although I was looking forward to reading this, I was really disappointed. He presents a very formulaic, black and white picture— if this happened to you, here’s how you likely respond. He also doesn’t give much direction for change. I got the impression this was designed as an advertisement for Life Skills. There’s also a fair amount of repetition, along with questionable scientific statements that are based on research that is now 20 years old. Not worth the price of the book.

I'm always in search of ways to improve my life, mental, physical, spiritual. I want to change to be better. To be a better father for my children and a better husband for my wife. It is a choice I am making. Broken Children, Grown-up Pain helps me to better understand my past and to have more control of my thoughts and actions. This book helped me to understand why others, myself included act out when certain 'buttons' are pushed. I'll be the first to admit I'm not perfect. That being said, I am still responsible for my actions and I have a better understanding of the actions of others. Why people act out the way they do. Why I acted out the way I did when my 'buttons' were pushed. Just reading this book won't fix issues, that's up to you. I recommend this book.

This is an excellent read! I started reading this book out of curiosity b/c the summary resonated with me. As I read however I realized that I was experiencing my life looking thru foggy windows. There were some specific things that I did, some bad habits I had developed in my youth if you will that I had just kind of buried thinking I could control them b/c I was more mature now and hoped they would never resurface. This book really helped me to begin to recognize the source of those behaviors and defog the windows. Jesus and I knew there was some programming that needed to be deleted from my server, this book is a great tool in that process.

I really enjoyed the book.....after reading Louis Hay and other self improvement books this one was totally different and came from a different angle all together. It is something that should be read twice and I am interested in taking the Life Skills course here in Atlanta. Great book

This book brought me an incredible understanding and perspective as to why I’ve wrestled with the issues I have as an adult. It was exactly what I needed to be nudged into starting regular counseling to begin addressing my wounds and shame. This book doesn’t supply the tools to grow up on your own (since it’s not really possible) but it is an excellent primer and foundation for understanding your (or a loved one’s) struggle.

This book literally changed my life. I gained understanding of how the different stages of trauma effect people. Very awesome book. I highly recommend it to anyone who has experienced soul crushing childhood trauma yet ready to move past it.

Review

"What a marvelous book. An enthralling blend of adventure story, insightful memoir, and keen-eyed nature observation. Van Hemert is a fearless spirit and a master storyteller, to be admired equally for her astonishing grit and her elegant, compelling prose."―Jennifer Ackerman, author of The Genius of Birds"A truly astounding journey, beautifully written. Caroline Van Hemert follows in the tradition of wilderness adventurers John Muir, Margaret Murie, Cheryl Strayed, and Robert Macfarlane, but she is not one to stick to well-trodden trails. Alongside her husband, she faces predatory bears, roaring rivers, and 4,000 miles of the world's most remote, wild country. She also weaves in her doubts, questions, and insights as a woman and bird biologist. An edge-of-your-seat thrilling read, but with a refreshing humility and grace. My favorite book of 2019, and one the best Alaskan books I have ever read."―Eowyn Ivey, author of To the Bright Edge of the World and Pulitzer Prize finalist The Snow Child"Van Hemert's vibrant and elegant book transports, educates, and inspires. To read The Sun Is a Compass is to be masterfully guided through the wild by an expert not only on nature itself but on the deep and often hidden connections between the natural world and our human lives."―Barbara Natterson Horowitz, MD, coauthor of Zoobiquity"Caroline Van Hemert has written a riveting book full of birds, danger, beauty and wonder. Her intrepid travels with her equally adventurous husband left me breathless with awe."―Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an Octopus"I thoroughly enjoyed The Sun Is a Compass. It is an exciting modern adventure story in the far north that will appeal to anyone with a yen for experiencing wild nature."―Bernd Heinrich, author of Mind of the Raven"In The Sun Is a Compass, adventure and romance journey hand in hand, covering 4,000 tough miles, reminding all of us that the easy way may not be the best way."―Bill Streever, author of Cold"Ornithologist and naturalist Caroline Van Hemert has written a thrilling account of an epic journey from the Pacific Coast to the Arctic Ocean. A triumph in wilderness travel, scientific curiosity, and adventure writing that exposes the sublime thrill and loving touch to be found in nature and our fellow human beings."―John Marzluff, Professor of Wildlife Science and author of Welcome to Subirdia"I was thoroughly charmed by Caroline Van Hemert's memoir of arctic travel. The astonishing length of the journey she and her husband chose to make -- on foot, by rowboat, and on skis -- leaves you shaking your head in wonder. Her honesty about her own anxieties, her informed thought about fearful and beautiful encounters along the way, and the gritty determination with which she and her husband faced each day offer us a rich and compelling story."―Barry Lopez, author of Horizon and Arctic Dreams"The Sun Is a Compass is an adventure story, but also a love story. It is thrilling, uplifting, and hopeful, both as a journey across northern wilds and as a diary of a couple growing ever closer together. Caroline and Pat's epic journey will rekindle your faith in human endurance, and intimacy."―David Rothenberg, author of Nightingales in Berlin and Why Birds Sing"Caroline Van Hemert has crafted a book as remarkable and dimensional as her epic journey. She is able to offer a scientist's insight into the natural world while writing of danger, beauty, and love without ego and with refreshing grace and honesty. Her book is a gift not just to those who like to venture on the wild side, but to anyone intrigued by the possibilities of strong partnership, imagination, and curiosity. This is unlikely to be a book you just read; it is one that will make you soar."―Jill Fredston, author of Rowing to Latitude and Snowstruck

If you pick up one book this year, make it this one. A love letter to life, nature, and the kindness of strangers. Written by a woman with heart, a knowledge of the world around her so vast, an adventurer like you’ve never known. This is Caroline Van Hemert’s memoir THE SUN IS A COMPASS. Let her take you to Alaska and beyond.Hers is a powerful, gripping like you are on the trip with her, 4,000 mile journey you cannot believe, but you will be rooting for her and her husband all the way, starting in the Pacific Northwest to Alaska, through rivers and the open sea, rough terrain, snow, and glaciers, as they explore the great wide open by foot, skis, rowboat, and canoe.A spellbinding magnificently told story of discovery, the capacity of strength, about two people who define what it means to follow your dream. Nature comes alive through the waters, mountains, birds, animals, and all that they encounter. You will never take the fresh air around you for granted after reading THE SUN IS A COMPASS.

Warning: Do not read in public if you don't want strangers to see you crying. I was crying three minutes in to the book, and cried several more times while reading this book on two long flights.I picked up this book because I was familiar with Caroline's chickadee research. The book was about so much more. I feel like books come in to your life when you really need them and that was the case with this one for me. I couldn't put it down.

I have loved wilderness adventure stories since I was a kid reading (and rereading) Caddie Woodlawn and My Side of the Mountain; The Sun Is a Compass is a fantastic addition to the genre. I would never dream of trekking 4,000 miles, as Van Hemert and her husband did, from the Pacific Northwest to the Alaskan Arctic, but reading about how --and why! -- they did is totally gripping. From the details of the food they packed (Snickers, Crisco, and ramen noodles all figure prominently in their meals) to the people they met and animals they encountered along the way (an aggressive bear, a flock of trumpeter swans, an enormous herd of migrating caribou) -- I could not put this down. It's beautifully written, carefully observed, and an amazing testament to endurance in the face of rough weather, hunger, and marital irritations.

I received an advance copy of the book. I don't usually finish books I'm asked to write about. I opened this one because Caroline Van Hemert is an authority on chickadees (specifically, the problem in Alaska of so many chickadees having badly deformed bills). So I started the book, and although she wrote very little about chickadees, I could not put the book down.In 2012, Van Hemert and her husband journeyed from Bellingham, Washington up the Inside Passage via rowboats he had built, and then on to the Arctic Ocean and through the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on foot, skis, and pack rafts, with a couple of opportunities to use canoes for stretches--they did the entire 4,000 mile journey on their own power. They carried their supplies, beforehand setting up a few boxes to ship to themselves via the USPS to small communities along the way.I was fully drawn into the hardships they endured, the splendid beauty they witnessed, and the thrilling wildlife they encountered, from scary bear stories (they decided ahead of time that lugging a gun would be more weight than it was worth) to touching encounters with baby hawks that they could not rescue and goslings that they could. Imagine being within an arm's length of a caribou herd, or quietly watching wolves move along their path below.Whether you love stories about birds and other wildlife, the Alaskan wilderness, epic journeys involving mountain climbing and negotiating treacherous waters in small, hand-powered craft, or young love, The Sun Is a Compass is simply splendid.

This book is part love story, part bird biology, part epic continental adventure. It's a rich blend of memoir, science, and lively descriptions of people, places, and feelings across seascapes and landscapes from Washington State to Northwestern Alaska. It's about a young couple and their life-changing journey that carries them self-propelled by row-boat, ski, foot, packraft, and canoe across northwestern America. The author, Caroline Van Hemert, is an Alaska-born and raised PhD scientist. Her husband, Pat Farrell, is an Alaskan "man's man" who can build anything from spruce bark canoe in the wilderness to custom homes in Anchorage. The two fell in love with each other in wilderness and tested themselves on the scale of journey that very few in today's modern world have done.Caroline Van Hemert is equally adept of painting verbal portraits of her family, friends, and husband Pat, as she is at explaining the complicated migratory and physiological ecology of the birds she finds all along the way from Bellingham to Kotzebue.Other adventure books often seem introverted, self-aggrandizing, or faux-modest and I often can't finish reading them. This book is honest, open, and wonderful. There's so much to it, that it's worth reading twice—personally, I liked it better the second time.

The Sun is a Compass is an adventure story. It's a true story of an incredible journey that is dangerous across Alaska. I always like this type of story because the characters always learn something valuable about themselves. It's a great story. I enjoyed it. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Caroline and her husband Pat take an unimaginable journey from Washington to the Arctic Circle. through places that I am not all that familiar with. I was both impressed and in awe of the pure fortitude to finish what they started. I enjoyed this book, and picked it because I was a huge fan of Wild by Cheryl Strayed.I received an uncorrected advance copy of this book in kind for my honest review. My advice is for the finished copy to include a map, I was able to look up most of the route they took, but a map would be helpful to the reader. Also, the book refers to birds a lot, a chart of the birds would be a nice touch.

Max Hastings delivers a great overview of the Vietnam War, and much better than Ken Burns did in his documentary and its companion book in my opinion. I enjoyed the Burns book, but I felt like many South Vietnamese felt that it was a lacking in detailing the atrocities of the Communists. I'll admit my biases now however. My own Grandfather was an ARVN grunt who got put in a gulag for years after the war. Ken Burns deserves credit for bringing the Vietnam War back to the forefront, but more details of the beasts that the US and South Vietnam were fighting would have given a more nuanced look to the viewership. The Communists buried people alive who resisted them to save bullets. They hacked people to death. Summary executions of "enemies of the revolution" were done in order to create a Stalinist society. Westerners sometimes of a romantic view of the Davidian "freedom fighters" throwing off the Goliaths of the west, and label Ho Chi Minh as a Nationalist rather than a Communist. But the North Vietnamese policies were Stalinist policies, and no one but the most ardent Communists today would call Stalin anything other than a ruthless butcher. Hastings did well in discussing Ho's commitment to the Comintern even before WWII, and his purges of the Vietnamese peoples of the various nationalist groups who also fought the French. There were dozens of Nationalists striving for an independent Vietnam. The Viet Minh butchered them all. Americans who remember Afghanistan in the 80s will remember that we did not aid the Taliban, but rather a fractured network of Mudjahideen fighting against Soviet troops. However, the Taliban won the scramble for power in the post-war period and destroyed all other opposition groups. The Viet Minh had done the same thing 30 years earlier.I believe Hastings put it best when he said something along the lines of "Those who feel like America was wrong had a tendency to take the extra step, and assume that their enemies were right" and that South Vietnam and North Vietnam embarked a bloody conflict that neither "deserved" to win.Hastings frames it as a tragedy, so the language and prose he uses stir the heart and the stories he collected are truly heartbreaking. As a journalist, he knows how to write in a manner that a more perhaps "dry" history does not fully capture. Since he is a Brit, I felt that Hastings approached this story with less bias that Vietnamese or American historians tend to. American historians understandably tend to frame it as an American history. Hastings takes a more Vietnamese-centric angle with this work. We also see perspectives from the British officials throughout the work. I simply could not put this book down, because it is so well written.Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book, and recommend it to anyone who liked Ken Burns' documentary and would like to flesh out their understanding of the conflict.

If you want to read only one history of the Vietnam War, choose this book, “Vietnam, an Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975”, by Max Hastings. Does that mean I agree with all of the author’s conclusions—no. It means that Max Hastings has succeeded better than any other author I have read in capturing, and then presenting in an understandable way what actually happened in that long bloody conflict.Hastings faces head on the lingering questions about the war, gives the reader the facts as he found them and then his conclusions based on those facts. He finds few generals worthy of the name on either side. On the other hand he also recites in detail the actions of these generals that led to those conclusions. You can chose a differing opinion if you want. The Vietnam War for Hastings was a 30 year tragedy, interspersed with courage, stupidity alternating with brilliance, and some humor as well. Thirty years is a lot to cover even in 752 pages. The beauty of the book is that Hastings succeeds in telling the larger story of the war along with many of the smaller ones as well. Like Cornelius Ryan, in his books, “The Longest Day” and a “Bridge Too Far”, Hastings is a former newspaper reporter, actually a war reporter that reported on the Vietnam War. What that means for the reader is mostly short well thought out sentences that tell an understandable story about a complex subject.
The fact that the war itself changed every year and that a soldier’s experience depended a great deal on the unit he was with and the Area of Operations that the unit was responsible for is well told, well explained. Even more important Hastings finally gets the battles of Tet ’68 right. It was a massive victory completely misreported at home.
You can read my book, “Steel Rain, the Tet Offensive 1968” to find out what being an elite paratrooper was like in the late 1960's, when the country had a draft and well over five hundred thousand Americans were serving one year tours in Vietnam, or Frank Boccia’s book “Crouching Beast” to learn what happened at the battle of Hamburger Hill, but if you want to know what happened during the entire Vietnam War including more than a bit about the French debacle and lead in to America’s involvement, then read “Vietnam, an Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975”, by Max Hastings.
I should disclose that I was one of those interviewed by the author and I am quoted a couple of times in the book but that was the only time I ever met him.

I have read and reviewed many books on Vietnam, but it is hard to believe this one will be surpassed in the foreseeable future. It is comprehensive, balanced and fair. The title says it all. There were no good guys in Vietnam--on one hand, Diem, the Thieu family, Madame Nhu...what a cast of losers and corrupt, self-seeking jerks. And these were our allies, so-called. On the other side a bunch of Stalinists willing to destroy much of their country to impose a dictatorship which guarantees poverty and degradation. One comes away feeling that the Vietnamese--all of them, north and south, communist and anti-communist--got what they deserved. Quite a bit of attention is given to the clowns in Washington of both Democrat and Republican administrations who quite obviously didn't know what they were doing and wouldn't admit they'd made a wrong decision, at the cost of over 50,000 American lives. The Vietnamese deserved what they got; the American soldiers and Marines didn't.

I am usually quite skeptical of any book written by an entertainer because, if I'm being honest, most of the time they aren't very good. I hadn't read Joey's other book, and I'm really only what I would call a "casual" Joey Graceffa fan in general, but I thought the concept of this novel sounded like something I might enjoy so I decided to give it a shot. I can now safely say it was money well spent and that this novel does young adult fiction absolutely right. The first chapter felt a bit overwhelming as the main concepts of the book were introduced, but from there onward I could not put the book down. In many young adult novels I've read, the characters are lacking in personality and seem very flat and stereotypical. That isn't the case with Children of Eden. Each character has a multi-layered personality with strengths as well as flaws. The main character, a teenage girl named Rowan, has emotions that are conveyed remarkably well and having been a sixteen-year-old girl myself once, I could relate to what she was feeling many times throughout the book. Rowan has meaningful relationships with other characters in the book that add to the story rather than detracting from the main plotline. Many of her emotions toward other people are intense and grow and change over a short time span, but I felt that in the context of the story they made perfect sense where they might otherwise feel jarring. Overall, this was a beautiful, well-constructed story that has become an instant favorite. To anyone skeptical, as I was, I highly recommend you give this book a chance if you enjoy young adult fiction with a sci-fi element. The end of the book left me begging for more and I do hope for more literature from Joey in the future.

I saw that this book had a perfect rating and just glanced at the reviews super quick before I bought it. I didn't know anything about the author or his apparent YouTube channel, and I thought the cover and concept looked cool, so what the heck? Children of Eden failed to deliver on what could've been an amazing story. When you're working in such a niche space as YA dystopian fiction, its going to be hard not to overlap with some of the other well known books out there, but I expect a certain level of originality, as well as quality with books. The ideas within the book aren't new, but that's not what put me off of the book, it's the fact that the author didn't try to hash out the ideas and make them believable/unique. World has gone to hell, and now you have a girl who doesn't belong and is trying to change that. Cool, I'm down for that. You run into your conspiracy theory, you characters dangerous plan to save the world, and then leap towards their happy ending. Except there is no consequence of anything in this story. Your character finds the conspiracy theory...and, it doesn't matter. Okay.. I guess? Your character starts to work into this huge plan to change her station in society...oh but no one wants to talk about what that plan really entails...? Okay... sure? There was definitely an attempt, but I don't think it was well executed. Now, the one highlight of this book is Rowan's sexuality. Being bi myself, I loved the idea of a bi character and how the author flawlessly introduced her sexuality without making a big "coming out" scene. That was a major highlight for me, but the fact that the author then threw Rowan at every person (the *only* people) she meets just doesn't sit well with me. Honestly, I didn't make it to the end of the book, but from what I read, I'm not missing much. The writing quality was poor and predictable. Very much a 'tell' book and not a 'show' book. The dialogue is cringey at times and we are just expected to know and care about the characters with very little knowledge about them. This book would be great for young teens (12-15 yrs) but for anyone who actually falls in the Young Adult range (16+), you're better off picking up a book with a better plot line, writing, and character development.

Readers will feel passion when experiencing living in the world of Eden as a sixteen year-old girl while reading Joey Graceffa’s Children of Eden. Rowan is the second child in the family, which is illegal in the world of Eden. Despite the family's secret, she never gives up on trying to escape to the outside world, which only leads to more trouble. Graceffa’s use of descriptive content keeps readers of all ages interested. The story progresses quickly, making the book engaging. Rowan leaves her family to become part of society which results in many conflicts, showing readers the difficulty in making life decisions. Readers should be aware of graphic scenes describing what happens to Rowan, along with profanity. Most teens will find the courage of Rowan engaging as she desperately tries to escape to the outside world. This book is recommended for all ages, but mostly towards teens.

I'll be honest. When I bought this book, I wondered if it was actually really good or if all the 5 star reviews were from young fans of Joey's YouTube channel. That's not to disparage Joey; I really enjoy watching his channel too, but this book has mega-hype. Well, I started reading it and could not put it down. Once again, I got stuck in the tub for a few hours because I couldn't find a good place to put it down. Finally, after midnight, I forced myself to go to sleep. I finished the next day. I would have given it 5 stars were it not for the ending being a little too reminiscent of Divergent, and a bit on the strange side. Also, it ended on a cliffhanger yet there is no real word of another book coming out anytime soon. That's not fair to readers. I kind of wondered, reading along, if that's where he was going to go with it (think Divergent series) and then there it was. It's still unique enough that I will read Book 2, if Joey ever gets around to writing it.

Ghost of the Innocent Man: A True Story of Trial and Redemption, by Benjamin Rachlin

Review

"Remarkable . . . A captivating, intimate profile of one man's stubbornly persistent efforts to convince others of his innocence . . . Rachlin is a skilled storyteller . . . With understatement and painstaking reporting, he fully succeeds in his rich, intimate portrait of Grimes."―Alex Kotlowitz, New York Times Book Review"A crisply written page turner . . . Rachlin painstakingly renders Grimes's life behind bars . . . Deploying the same precision with which he documents Grimes's prison life, Rachlin recounts the arduous and complex work to move the wheels of justice . . . Read Ghost of the Innocent Man to follow its twisted path . . . but don't read for the gripping story alone . . . The National Registry of Exonerations calculates that over 18,000 years have been lost by innocent people serving time . . . Shouldn't we be better than this?"―Martha Anne Toll, NPR"Intriguing . . . A gripping legal-thriller mystery . . . This is a story that profoundly elevates good-cause advocacy to greater heights-to where innocent lives are saved . . . This empathetic book tells the story of the beginnings of the movement to right a national crisis of wrongful convictions-and of one of its first victories . . . A fine piece of investigative journalism."―Don Oldenburg, USA Today"Rachlin vividly describes the anguish that would well up in Grimes again and again during his twenty-four years behind bars . . . In Rachlin's skilled hands, Grimes's story triggers indignation but also confers solace, Grimes [himself] being one of the solacing features."―Dennis Drabelle, The Washington Post"Dramatic and eye-opening . . . A hopeful story . . . By showing us that the specter of wrongful convictions involves flesh-and-blood human beings, Ghost of the Innocent Man confronts us with the cruelest injustices of the criminal justice system, even as it also holds out hope for a more humane future."―San Francisco Chronicle"One of the most powerful aspects of Ghost of the Innocent Man is its portrait of time behind bars--the transfers, delays, and letter-writing campaigns that form the scaffolding of lives in limbo . . . A story so important and infuriating it is hard to look away."―Claudia Rowe, Seattle Times"Ghost of the Innocent Man is nothing less than a masterpiece of investigative reporting and virtuosic writing. It is a book that brilliantly substantiates society's elemental promise to its citizenry-that we not have our freedoms wrongly taken from us. Benjamin Rachlin's book is Greek drama brought into our own times. It will change readers' lives, I think, and inspire them. It's that good."―Richard Ford"Ghost of the Innocent Man is deeply researched and, more importantly, deeply felt. For both reasons and many more, it is a profound meditation on the human condition and a vital contribution to the literature. The endurance and fortitude of Willie Grimes surpass those of any athlete or explorer. The passages in which Christine Mumma assembles lawmen and legislatures of all different creeds to help resolve an urgent national crisis should make us all consider these current times as not just toxic and tragic but filled with the possibility of hope and redemption. In the end, Benjamin Rachlin takes us through the justice system in all its immutability and shows us the light we can wield should we so choose."―Jeff Hobbs, author of the New York Times bestseller The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace"Enraging, instructive, and profoundly moving, Ghost of the Innocent Man is a gripping lesson in the terrible costs of our flawed criminal justice system and the power that individuals have to change its course. The story of how a gentle soul like Willie J. Grimes received an undeserved life sentence is heartbreaking-full of human cruelty and carelessness and worse. But in the care and exactitude of Benjamin Rachlin's telling, it is also an inspiring call for readily achievable reform. With judicious compassion, he narrates the errors, omissions, and societal forces that led to this wrongful conviction, setting it all squarely in the context of a persistent national disgrace, and reminding us of our responsibility to work toward true justice. The effect is remarkable and unforgettable."―Eli Sanders, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of While the City Slept"Ghost of the Innocent Man is an honest and critical look at our justice system. . . [and] a meticulously researched book. It is a must-read for every American who cares about justice."―The Washington Book Review

An engaging, eye-opening and phenomenally written page turner. Ghost of the Innocent Man expertly weaves together two stories: an intimate portrait of one man's appalling, 25 year-long journey through a flawed criminal justice system, and the heroic efforts of a group of people determined to find true justice for the innocent. In telling these stories Rachlin illuminates the nationwide problem of wrongful convictions and the immense challenge of proving innocence in a judicial system designed to determine guilt. Although Ghost of the Innocent Man describes a particular failure of the criminal justice, it also offers hope that there is a better way, that the innocent can be freed without undermining confidence in the justice system, and that some small fraction of wrongful convictions does not need to be the price of doing business in America's courtrooms. Rachlin's writing brings a level of suspense to these stories that makes Ghost of the Innocent man hard to put down, as the two tales race towards a conclusion that is simultaneously satisfying and dismaying.

This is going to become one of my favorite books. I wanted to take my time reading it, but couldn't stop--it's that intriguing and gripping, And I've read many memoirs and biographies of wrongly convicted victims of injustice, but this book is outstanding in every way.I didn't know that North Carolina--my home state--was the only state to have a legislature authorize an Innocence Inquiry Commission--to this day. I knew about Chris Mumma and her successes in representing the victims of police and/or prosecutorial misconduct, and I knew retired Justice Beverly Lake was the primary influence in establishing the IIC, but not until now did I know what a grueling effort it was. With all the terrible things NC has done to indigent people in recent years, it was good to have cause to be proud of some who strenuously work and succeed in addressing the inequities.

An excellent book, a good story. The author makes a good argument for every state to have an innocence project like the one in North Carolina. The story of Willie Grimes's long incarceration is told realistically and sensitively.

As a high school English teacher, this is a book I want all of my students to read at some point in their academic lives. The research, detail, and emotion conveyed through Rachlin’s writing is impressive and inspiring. The book is completely readable, regardless of a background in law. Highly recommend.

This story is riveting and heartbreaking but the outcome gives you solace that there are people with integrity in this world.

thank you I love the service

Well written book It highlights a totally miscarriage of justice that goes on unchecked.

Well written and informative.
