I think Catherine Ryan Hyde may have become one of my favorite authors. I really love to read, so that is saying a lot. The thing the keeps me wrapped up in her books is the way she uses them to share some pretty heavy "life lessons". Or maybe they're not "lessons", as much as very simple truths the resonate with me.I find my self stopping to highlight awesome quotes in her books all over. Sometimes I have to stop myself because the characters have a way of making these profound comments all over the place. If I highlighted all of them, half the book would be yellow!I think I've read about 20-25 of her books and I'm looking forward to gobbling up the rest of them. The author has a wonderful gift for developing characters so we see the grow with each turn of the page. Some of the things that happen in her stories stories may seem are a bit hard to believe in the real life, but this IS fiction, right?!Overall, the stuff that stretches beyond what we might believe would happen in our every day life all still fit together? Maybe I am being sappy, but they just fit together for me because I believe in some of the simple truths the author does such a beautiful job expressing through her works.Honestly, the one thing I don't like about her books is just that they're over too fast! I can literally polish off one of them in just 1-3 nights of relaxing and reading after work!Very cool plus is that a bunch of her books are available for "free" with Amazon unlimited! Finding Chloe wasn't, but it's still worth the investment. .. Both the $ and the time!Happy reading!
Nobody creates characters better than this amazing author. And this book is FILLED with such a variety of totally believable and relatable people I feel as though I have met them all in person!Chloe is a very damaged young teenager - physically and mentally. She meets Jerome (Jody) who has been disowned and thrown out of his family's home as a teenager, when his parents learn that he is Gay. FATE brings the two young people together when Jody witnesses Chloe being gang-raped in an alley and fights off the group. Chloe, living on the streets, is so accustomed to such attacks, she has just accepted them. They become like a brother and sister team and Jody tries to convince her that there is GOOD AND BEAUTY in the world. And he ultimately sets out to show Chloe the places of beauty across the country! Everything from Niagara Falls to the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, etc and to their final destination: Big Sur on the Pacific Ocean. They do all this with practically no money and against all odds. They meet wonderful and terrible people along the way.As always it is the characters that this author so vividly creates that drive the story! And it is a wonderful, heart-wrenching and heart-warming tale! Do not miss this one!
This was a good book but not the best I have read from this author, for that I deduct one star. Based on the books I have read from Catherine Ryan Hyde, she usually touches on a social issue. In this story the main character is a gay teen. It is not about him being gay though, it is about his struggle to save his friend Chloe and in the process they save each other. NOW for the deduction of another star. I would think that Ms. Hyde would be more sensitive about stereo typing. I am from West Virginia and I was offended, but saw it coming, the character with WV tags on his truck was missing some teeth and the dog had mange. REALLY????? When the story told of the man with missing teeth, I thought to myself "I bet anything they are in WV now" not because that is the way all West Virginians are but that is the way we are ALWAYS stereo typed. Sure enough! Not sure I will be reading any more of her books.
The characters were pretty deep individuals. I liked how the author let you figure that out without going into too much details about their bad experiences in life. You just know what they have been through by how they respond to what's going on in their lives at the moment. Jordan has an old man's spirit in him because he is mature and feels responsibility from the moment he meets Chole. I loved the details of the sights they visited and experiencing their awe with them. I needed this book to let me remember the beauty in the world. Remind me that it is still there waiting for me to see it and marvel at its greatness. Now I have to go plan a trip from NC to NY and I'm going to see it with different eyes this time.
The book is well written. It has good dialog and is easy to read. It is about a teen age boy and girl who travel the American continent looking for and finding beautiful places. They have little money but overcome both physical and mental problems. I like the way that the author includes the boy's thinking and reasoning along with his dialog. He is not romantically involved with the girl but is very protective of her.
Catherine Ryan Hyde does it again! She introduces us to two young characters, both dealt raw deals in life, who come together in circumstances of desperation, then allows us to follow their road to self-redemption. The story is truly beautiful, reminding readers of all the marvels around us everyday that we often fail to see because we are so focused on our own little...often unsatisfying...lot in life. Through Jordy's and Chloe's eyes, on their jouney to determine if the world is or is not beautiful, the reader glimpses both the big and the little the human race adds to our perception of the world around us. From broad-ranging mountains to small tidal pools, Jordy and Chloe discover "the tip of the iceberg" of the marvels of nature abounding in the big world in which we live. Even the worst that human nature has to offer fails to counter the lessons learned on their journey. This book is an amazing read that both humbles and inspires the reader as the characters learn what we so often forget: joy comes from knowing no matter how bad things can get, beauty surround us, if we just stop and take the time to look for it. I highly recommend this most insightful and provocative book to all readers. Hyde once again amazes!
