About the Author

Benjamin Rachlin grew up in New Hampshire. An engaging, eye-opening and phenomenally written page turner. Ghost of the Innocent Man expertly weaves together two stories: an intimate portrait of one man's appalling, 25 year-long journey through a flawed criminal justice system, and the heroic efforts of a group of people determined to find true justice for the innocent. In telling these stories Rachlin illuminates the nationwide problem of wrongful convictions and the immense challenge of proving innocence in a judicial system designed to determine guilt. Although Ghost of the Innocent Man describes a particular failure of the criminal justice, it also offers hope that there is a better way, that the innocent can be freed without undermining confidence in the justice system, and that some small fraction of wrongful convictions does not need to be the price of doing business in America's courtrooms. Rachlin's writing brings a level of suspense to these stories that makes Ghost of the Innocent man hard to put down, as the two tales race towards a conclusion that is simultaneously satisfying and dismaying.

This is going to become one of my favorite books. I wanted to take my time reading it, but couldn't stop--it's that intriguing and gripping, And I've read many memoirs and biographies of wrongly convicted victims of injustice, but this book is outstanding in every way.I didn't know that North Carolina--my home state--was the only state to have a legislature authorize an Innocence Inquiry Commission--to this day. I knew about Chris Mumma and her successes in representing the victims of police and/or prosecutorial misconduct, and I knew retired Justice Beverly Lake was the primary influence in establishing the IIC, but not until now did I know what a grueling effort it was. With all the terrible things NC has done to indigent people in recent years, it was good to have cause to be proud of some who strenuously work and succeed in addressing the inequities.

An excellent book, a good story. The author makes a good argument for every state to have an innocence project like the one in North Carolina. The story of Willie Grimes's long incarceration is told realistically and sensitively.

As a high school English teacher, this is a book I want all of my students to read at some point in their academic lives. The research, detail, and emotion conveyed through Rachlinâ€™s writing is impressive and inspiring. The book is completely readable, regardless of a background in law. Highly recommend.

This story is riveting and heartbreaking but the outcome gives you solace that there are people with integrity in this world.

In 1975 Stephen Ambrose wrote a duel biography entitled "Crazy Horse and Custer" which I found to be very enjoyable. We now have Duane Schultz writing "Coming Through Fire" which I found to be an enjoyable read even though I didn't find any new revelations. The book primarily covers the plains' Indian wars between the massacre at Sand Creek, Colorado, in 1864 and Custer's attack on Black Kettle's Cheyenne tribe on the banks of the Washita in Oklahoma territory in 1868. I feel the author gave a good description of John Chivington's merciless attack on Black Kettle's Cheyenne tribe at Sand Creek which I didn't get in Ari Kelman's book entitled "A Misplaced Massacre" which only argued as to where in Colorado the massacre actually took place. Although Black Kettle survived the attack at Sand Creek in 1864 both he and his wife were killed by Custer's 7th Cavalry at the Washita in 1868.The author spends a fair amount of time describing the misfits that made up Custer's 7th Cavalry along with Custer's emphasis on discipline even though he, himself, took liberties that led to a court marshal. Both Chivington and Custer thought their attacks on Black Kettle's peaceful Cheyennes would lead to fame and glory for themselves when in reality they were both castigated for it.Black Kettle felt the only way his people would survive was by going along with what the Great Father wanted him to do. Other members of his tribe called Dog Soldiers were strongly against Black Kettle's belief.I found the book to be an interesting read even for those who may not be at all familiar with George Armstrong Custer and Chief Black Kettle. I don't believe you will find any new information to speak of here, but I have to say I did enjoy the book.

I really like this book. I also think this is a significant book in that it is impossible to completely dodge the importance of the events described therein. Black Kettle, the US Calvary, Custer, they are all key players for a number of reasons. I bought this book because I believed it was a 'prelude' of sorts to the famous Battle of Little Bighorn, however I was wrong because it is much more. My respect for Black Kettle is immense. My respect for the plains Indians is greater. My understanding of Custer improved too. Overall I really recommend it. It is a short enough read that you can finish it in a weekend as I did. However You may have to reread it as I did to really get the most out of it. I really enjoyed this volume and think you will too.

I have always enjoyed the writings by Duane Schultz. He does not mix words and calls a spade a spade. His detail for historical facts and detail are second to none.

As expected from this author I found this book to be well written and fast paced. I thought the author did a good job of presenting both Custer and Black Kettle in a fair way. Neither of these men were without flaw. Both of them were exceptional leaders. One strong point was the author's inclusion of a great deal of material gleaned years after the battle on the Washita from interviews with both US Army and Cheyenne survivors. One weak point was the small number of maps. Overall, were it not for the fact that Custer, his life and battles, has been so often covered in the past I might have given this book five stars.

Good history well told. A gripping, compelling true story of a warrior and a man of peace. I knew in the first few pages that "Coming Through Fire" was not just another Custer book. Far from it. It's a fresh and exciting approach that focuses primarily on Custer's post-Civil War years, a time when the so-called Boy General, who had achieved such fame and glory before, had been forgotten. Without a war to fight, Custer drifted into obscurity, showed petty and cruel behavior towards the men under his command, mounted a failed expedition against Indians, followed by a court martial and a year's dismissal.Paralleling Custer's story is the recounting of a culture under siege, and of Chief Black Kettle of the Cheyenne, a man of peace who tried repeatedly to save his people by signing treaties with the government, though each one meant giving up even more of their heritage and way of life. He recognized that it was either compromise or annihilation, a fate he barely escaped at the 1864 massacre at Sand Creek, as Schultz notes. The book follows Black Kettle from one peace treaty to another, pushing his people into ever smaller and more arid reservations until they had no choice but to fight back, which gave Custer what he longed for - a new war. "Coming Through Fire" tells the story of Custer's return to his glory days through a dawn attack in 1868 on Black Kettle's peaceful Indian village on the banks of the Washita River. The battle is vividly described in detail from both sides, Indian and 7th Cavalry, and concludes in the death of Black Kettle and his wife. Though Custer made the same mistake that would lead to his death at Little Bighorn eight years later, he won at the Washita, and once again was dubbed America's greatest Indian fighter.In "Coming through Fire," as in his other books on the Civil War and World War II, Schultz brings history and the people who shape it fully alive. His books read like novels, yet they are so thoroughly researched that I always learn something new. This latest work is highly recommended, both for the exciting events and the way Schultz coherently weaves together the complex story of the characters who braved the fire to try to win their war.

An easy and enjoyable read, but fundamentally a presentation of Custer and Black Kettle 101. But to be sure, there area number of true gems buried deep inside. However the book's climactic showdown of Custer's attack onBlack Kettle's village on the Washita gets relatively short and brief attention. A more detailed and lengthy chapter about Custer's "victory" at the Washita would have been more appropriate.

Although I enjoyed the same story as told separately from the perspective of Russel and Min it was Min's account that I truly loved. I was left wondering with the second volume of the series why Russel had walked away so unscathed by his first romance depicted in volume one Geography Club. Through Min's account the reader finally grasped it had left him devastated and not the strong young man he depicted himself as being through his account as written by the author. I reread the first two volumes after finishing this book and had a better grasp of Russel's narrative. Sometimes he was bluntly honest in his feelings regarding Kevin while other times they were downplayed or hidden. I liked this technique employed by the author as I felt it was true to life in how we all are not completely honest in recounting stories that deal with strong emotions particulary when they involve love and heartbreak.

The slightly different character perspectives (Russel/Min) for essentially the same plot led to quite a deal of repetition. Probably an interesting exercise for the author and probably less so for the reader. That's my view but it may not be the case for all readers. PS Why is Geography Club ( Book 1) not available on Kindle - rather disappointing given that it is referred to in this volume?

This author is just OK. He writes well, but the stories don't really have much pazzaz. This was the worst book of this series.I bought a bunch of his books as they all got really high ratings for him as an author. Well, he's no Mark Roeder or any number of great authors I could name. This book tells the same story twice once from the main characters perspective and once from his female friend. I was really not interested in her view, however you get to find out things left unsaid in the first story. All in all, it was ok I guess.

Brent Hartinger has done it again. This is another great book in the Geography Club story line. The book stands alone, but you can get more out of it if you read the first two books in the series, Geography Club, and The Order of the Poinson Oak.This book is a very interesting book. It is not just one book, but two books in one. The books tells a story of the same time in space, from the viewpoints of two characters. The first one is from Russel, and the second, his best friend Min. You read the first book, and then flip it over to get the second book. You get to see some of the same events, but from the viewpoint of the other character. There is also some things that are revealed when you read the second book.I found the story to be engrosing, and I couldn't stop reading. The characters are well done, and the wisdom in the book is something to think about. I think that any teen will love this book. There are some twists and turns in the plot that are great, and a few mysteries that are revealed as more that they appear. There is one loose end that doesn't get tied up by the end of the book, and I truely hope that Hartinger writes another book to tie up this loose end. If his is, I eagerly await it.This book is a definite read for anyone.

Harbinger seemed to still be in the bliss of having one of his books made into a movie. Paragraph after paragraph describes the process of making a low budget movie. I would guess his audience already knows most of what he wrote and isn't wowed by the excessive detail. "Lessons" learned by the main characters could have made for a nice short story, but Hartinger decided to tell the same story from another character's vantage point. I found myself speed reading through page after page just to get through annoying repetition. An entire level of possible plot and character development could have been unearthed, but Harbinger chose to just mow the lawn and clip the surface.

Let me start with this: I don't know what a "brain zombie" is. I read this book, and I still don't. This is more about Russell and his friends than about the zombie movie they're participating in. Russell's parents find out he's gay and they Freak. Out. And he doesn't know what to do with that. And Min's parents are very accepting of her bisexuality, but she's having trouble with a person she met on the set of the zombie movie.Don't read this book if you're looking for a zombie book. But if you want a book about high school or coming out or relationships, then this is the book for you. [Spoiler alert: The zombies are all actors.]

Gerald Weber is not only one who understands Tube Amp's extremely well, but also one who can explain the inner workings of these "mystical beasts" in a way that the average individual with only a bit of curiosity can understand. Fortunately for me, I have a real desire to know the equipment I used to play through and "maintain" as a kid in a rock band back in the late '60's and early '70's. Gerald's books may well be only collections of articles written for various magazines, and as such can repeat a bit here and there, but the simple way he explains things is priceless for those of us who do not fully understand electronics, and do not want to get bogged down in all the math one needs to know to design circuits. So many other writers feel it is imperative to deluge the reader with math, when all that is desired is an explanation of how something works. Gerald does that well. I can highly recommend his video, "Understanding Tube Guitar Amplifiers" as well. For those like me who are a tad slow on picking things up, the video is a huge help. I'll review the DVD separately. This book, however, along with his others, are great references, and packed with information you would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

90% of the book is dedicated to Fender amps. Although those are the designs from which most tube amplifiers are derived, (looking at YOU, Marshall,) it would have been interesting to see analyses of some other circuits, such as Mesa Boogie or Supro. A good introductory book nonetheless. Probably half of it contains schematics, although these days one could easily find them online. Nice to have them all in one place though.

Lots of useful information on the subject, but it rambles in places. I like it because I know where hes going and what he's talking about. Folks just starting into the subject matter might get lost or confused. Still a good read on the subject of tube amps, especially the vintage variety.

Let's face it understanding tube amps is really hard. I have a whole bunch of the McGraw Hill texts from the 1950's and really struggle with them because they are uncompromisingly mathematical and dry. The subject is so huge that you can't learn it from just one book. Gerald Weber's knowledge is broad on both the theoretical level and also the nitty gritty detail level. So be patient with him and enjoy the rambling journey towards tube enlightenment.

Enough info for most of us out there trying to tweak our amps and do some repairs, The blackfacing a silverface section was helpful with my 69 Bassman I was updating or backdating I guess LOL !

This is an interesting book, but it is not, as it calls itself, "a desktop reference of hip vintage guitar amps," unless the definition of "hip" is made so subjective as to be meaningless.The only amps regarding which this book could be considered a reference are a handful of old Fenders---one brand, and not even all of them. In fact, it only mentions Marshall amps occasionally, and there is practically nothing about Vox, or Ampeg, or Silvertone, much less any of the less-common vintage amps. With a title like this, I expected a book that one could leaf through and learn about vintage amps. This is not that book.But that's not to say this book doesn't have its good points. The author was an amplifier repairman and builder for many years, and he shares a lot of insights and tricks that I have not seen elsewhere. Most of the information in the book is aimed at, and of greatest use to, somebody who builds, refurbishes or repairs amplifiers, and there are a lot of hobbyists in that category (like me), and not a lot of resources available to them, so this book definitely can be an asset. But again, from the title, it is far from clear that it's for that audience.And, while Weber was a knowledgeable amp builder, he's not really a writer, and whoever edited this book for the publisher didn't really do much of a job---it's disjointed, and while it contains a lot of good information, it's not really organized. One chunk of the book is reprints of Trainwreck newsletters, presented without any context. And almost half the book is reprinted schematics, most for amps not even mentioned elsewhere in the book. In this book, they are padding, adding heft but not much useful information.If you build or tinker with amps as a hobby, there's probably a fair amount of information in here that you will find interesting and possibly useful. But if you leave the soldering to somebody else, this book is probably not for you. If you want a reference that will give you some basic information about hip vintage guitar amps, Pittman's "Tube Amp Book" is probably better, although it covers a lot more stuff and doesn't go into great depth. Or, if you're looking for a book that explains how amps work, Hunter's "Guitar Amplifier Handbook" would be better. But if you already have those and you're looking for more, this book might be up your alley.

A very accessible activity book that is truly teen-friendly. Dr. Baruch-Feldman draws upon authentic examples to which real teens can relate. The exercises are thought-provoking and not too overwhelming for teens to complete. The tone is optimistic and Dr. Baruch-Feldman provides the evidence-based research upon which this book is based in plain English and in a way that is meaningful and motivating. As a parent, I found this workbook to be very practical and realistic, and would definitely recommend purchasing this for your teenager!

This guide is a wonderful resource for teens, college students, young adults and parents. My daughter found it engaging and relatable and I loved the easy to understand advice and guidance to empower her to build her own self-confidence and Grit! There is also a fantastic online section for parents and educators with very helpful information and resources.

This book is not like other activity books. It has a "can do" upbeat attitude which is truly accessible and friendly. Parents and their teenage kids learn great tips and skills of how to really persevere to overcome any challenge that stands in their way. Also, the activities are not long or drawn out. They are really practical, thought provoking and stick with the reader after they have put the book down I enjoy Dr. Baruch-Feldman's drawing on her and her own kids' struggles and experiences. A really helpful workbook!

Good book that made great points. Teens understood it, but have to be motivated themselves to see a connection to what is being said. I donâ€™t think it helped the kids I felt needed it, but I think that had more to do with the kids than the book

The Grit Guide is a brilliant, accessible and supportive guide for teens and for adults who are challenged to achieve certain goals in their daily lives. As a Director of Counseling for Scarsdale High School and then Director of College Counseling for SAR High School as well as a college consultant in private practice in Scarsdale, I know that the biggest obstacles teenagers face are those they impose on themselves by underestimating their ability to identify and surmount challenges. I have long equated academic success with the dedication and commitment to practice that teens undertake in athletics. As a psychologist who regularly works with teenagers I want to applaud Caren Baruch-Feldman's guide for teens. I am currently working through the guide with two teenagers. First and foremost, the guide is respectful of teenagers and never talks down to them. Secondly, the guide synthesizes a mountain of theory and research into a highly usable format - for any age. Finally, it works from a position of strength beginning with a recognition of where the teenager is already displaying perseverance and a "can do" attitude. Parents may want to share this workbook with their teens and, if so, I recommend they buy two copies and go through it together - we can all use practical reminders about how to achieve goals at any age.

I can still remember when i was downloading Brendan Gregg webinars about disk I/Os. It was obvious, this guy knew a lot about it and could explain it in most efficient way. I was just getting frustrated that all this knowledge was not put into a book. A few years later the "precious" is here ! This book is simply amazing, covering all possible aspects of system performance. You will not be overwhelmed : Brendan knows how to find a good balance between over simplification and too much details. You will learn what you really need to know (the internals), the good methods, the right tools. I can't thank enough Brendan Gregg to bring this new master piece i was waiting for so long.If you're a system administration, a developper, a "true" database administrator trying to understand how your database is likely to interact with the operating system & hardware, here you are. You can't afford to miss this book.

I found this to be an excellent resource. I've been reading it slowly in my spare time and on plane rides and it's a big book, I'm about half way now.The book is well written and I enjoy the breadth and depth of the topics. Each of which is covert from a near beginner to an almost expert level. Which is good for me because my understanding of the topics Brendan covers spans the same range, some I've barely heard of others I use almost every week.He does cover both Linux and Solaris which make some of the procedure descriptions a bit repetititve but we do have a 90-10 split of Linux and Solaris machines and I may get stuck on a Solaris box one of these days.My only criticism so far is the glossary could be more complete, I would like to have had EVERY acronym he uses in there because of the slow pace, I'm reading I don't remember the ones we don't use. Very common problem.I'm using it to increase my skills in tracking down performance problems in software I develop and deploy for an international scientific collaboration. Fortunately for me, I haven't had a hard performance problem since I started reading the book, but I'm not sure how quickly I could use such a tome to solve a specific problem. On the other hand I have used many things I've learned to gain a better understanding of things that are working.I like most of the reviewers so far would recommend it for anyone with even basic skills who is interested in understanding the issues affecting System Performance.I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of how broad an audience it addresses. While that's a good thing in that people can find what they need it also means there is a lot they don't need. Nobody would write a book like this that only had what I need on the topic but I'm saving the 5 star rating for something that knocks my socks off. This is well worth the price if you take the time to not only read it but become familiar with the techniques presented.

Good books on analyzing performance seem to come out once every ten years or so, and this is this generation's classic work. Brendan's background in the development of DTrace and the analytic framework that he and his colleagues at Sun / Oracle and then Joyent have built up around it, as well as the methodologies he's been instrumental in developing (most notably the USE method), give him pretty much a unique level of analytic power. He organizes this material conceptually, grounding it in a discussion of tools and methods in chapter 2 and then working through those methods in the chapters that examine such performance topics as CPUs, operating systems, applications, and the like.

This book worked as a good reference when I was troubleshooting Linux/Application performance. The following section helped me to explain other in team why 90%+ memory usage is okay - morniting team need not be alarmed.Section 7.2.6. File System Cache Usageoperaing system uses available memory to cache the file system, improving performance. The principle is: If there is space main memory, use it for something useful. This can distress naive users who see the available free memory shrink to near zero...

Examples of using tools, some tips and tricks also included,If you are good at linux(or solaris) and interested in system and application performance, tracing and profiling, but you have some messy knowledge about this things - this book is for you.It is not about system administration, but it's between programming and adminstration.Reading this book and feel like i'm breaking through the wall of ignorance. Last time experienced similar feelings when reading Andrew Tanenbaum's books. This one is less theoretical, more practical.Strongly recommended.

As always Wanda Brunstetter has written a wonderful Amish story. The Hope Jar is different from other Amish stories and it was such a great story. The only negative to this book, it will be February 2019 before the second book in the series is released. ðŸ˜ž I highly recommend this book!

Oh my word, this story seemed so real. Michelle had such a horrific upbringing, to see her finally start realizing that she wasn't alone and also realizing that God is real and always with her, makes this a truly touching story. I imagine in the second book that Michelle will still face many challenges, but that she will finally find peace and fulfillment in God's love.

I love Wanda Brunstetter books and this last one did not disappoint! If you like romance and lots of suspense this is the book for you. I couldn't put it down!

There was nothing I didn't like about this book. I couldn't put it down. I was anxious to see what would happen when the real Sara turned up at her grandparents farm. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I want to find out if Michelle converts to the Amish faith and if the relationship with Ezekiel turns to marriage.

Wanda Brunstetter what a fantastic book I love the Prayer jar. The story is about deceit but Michelle needed the love of a family she never had of course she went about it the wrong way love and forgiveness is what life is all about I can't wait until February for the next book I think I have read every book you have written and enjoyed every single one of them. Oh no, I can't believe Part I of the story is over. The Hope Jar (The Prayer Jars Book 1), by Wanda Brunstetter, is a Great read. You meet Michell, Sarah, Mary Ruth, Willis Lapp, Brad, Ezekiel and many more friends. I look forward to the next one.

An interesting book on how a individual had a difficult life, than met an Amish couple who tried to help. Very exciting and great reading.

I have read all of Wandaâ€™s books but I think this is my favorite. I canâ€™t wait until the second book comes out!!! I canâ€™t wait to see what the future holds for Michele once she returns to the Amish farm.
