This rather short book was purchased as part of my library class in acquisition and collection development, some time ago. As I recall, I actually read it all in one sitting and found it to be an interesting, practical, and an easy read. I can certainly understand why my instructor chose this book for an introductory course.The book seemed to have covered from community analysis through developing collection policies, instructs one to use reviews to obtain materials as well as gives one an useful instruction on how to weed the collection and repairing/rebinding current items, and even on how to handle censorship issues whenever certain collections are challenged by a specific group(s). Personally, I found the section on repairing/rebinding materials to be useful as I often applied it for my own personal collection.I felt this book can serve as a guide for those of us who are new to the library field and for those in the library field to be reminded of certain things from the book.

My professor wrote this book and I took this class... very clear, concise, easy to read, relevant and informative.

Purchased for a course

I had to buy this for a library science class. I'm not in love with the format of this book. It has blocks upon blocks of text that tempts you to skim over the paragraph instead of reading it all. Some of the information within it doesn't seem quite complete either. For example, he'll list different types of procedures or terms used in a library but will fail to fully define the words he's using. You might get a history lesson or hypothetical scenario regarding the trouble collection developers face in that particular area, but actually EXPLAINING what they mean or what they are is often void from the entire paragraph. I ended up searching for a few of things online just so I could understand what he meant. I don't recommend this book unless you have to get it for school.

This book is easy to follow along. A great resource to learning about collection development. Plenty of margin space to make notes and write down thoughts as you need.

I used this for an introductory library course. The textbook was reader friendly; easy to understand. I found the book to be very practical and useful. The book included many websites to search. I found the book to be worth the price $27.00.

Text books, what can one say about them. They are a necessity that cannot be over looked. I have my degree and it is worth the purchase.

I wish I had been able to flip through the pages to see what was inside instead of relying on reviews. I didn't have a chance to actually sit down and look through this book until the next weekend after receiving it. Had I not been so busy and taken the time, I would have discovered that, while this is a cute book, it not for the serious, adult jewelry maker. The designs are more for 6 to 16 year olds who like feathers, fur and funky leather looks. Fore instance, most projects are cut outs of leather in the shape of cactus, leaves, polka dots, or taking a strip of leather and rolling it around your finger, then stitching it closed for a leather ring. I hope you get my point. Unless you want a book that is whimsical for young kids, don't waste your money.

I purchased this book because I wanted to learn to make leather jewelry as a hobby. When Leather Jewelry arrived, I was immediatley impressed, it was obviously aimed at someone who was a beginner at working with leather (which was perfect for me). The books introduction provided information on all of the the essentials needed to making the pieces. It lists tools, techniques (cutting, sewing, punching setting eyelets, rivets and even a few paragraphs on dyeing vegetable-tanned leather. There was even information on where to find great leather in small quantities.The designs are all contemporary, and overall had a great variety of options. It had something for beginners as well designs for someone more experienced.This book was perfect and couldn’t have been more helpful.

This book was okay, I could not and have not been excited about having bought it. I can't say it was not a good book, it just wasn't the book for me and where I am in working with leather. I actually put it away and just decided to go thru it again and see if there is anything I can use, before I sell it to a beginner in leather jewelry.I feel that no matter what, you will learn from others and I like to enjoy my time learning....this wasn't true for this book. But, go thru it and see if it is what you like, there are so may artist and creators because there are so many styles.

Right in the first few pages of this book the author states that only one of the projects is done with veg-tanned leather. All the rest are made from and with other types of leather. This would have been nice to know before buying as I prefer to only work with veg-tanned leather. The designs are very pretty but useless as I don't work with non veg-tanned leather.

I can't fault the seller for getting the book I ordered to me quickly . . . but the book, itself, sucks. Really, really ugly jewelry - not at all what I was looking for or expected. Now to figure out who I can unload this book on. . . . perhaps I'll just burn it.

Very strange jewelry. And too simplistic to require a book to show demonstrate them. We were very disappointed in this purchase and would have benefited from a sneak preview of pages in this book.

I recently received this book, and can’t wait to start some of these projects. Some people prefer to “look inside” the book first, so the publishers may want to consider opening up a few pages...

The first is a recurring one in Shakespeare's history plays -- namely, concern about the legitimacy of the monarchic rule and the toll on the psyche of the monarch ("Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown"). Related to that is the theme of betrayal, which is perhaps best exemplified when Prince John promises several rebellious nobles that they will be treated with mercy if they lay down their arms; as soon as they do so he orders their execution. That theme is also reflected in the question of how is one to know, concerning a colleague or friend, "thy face tomorrow" (a question, as reflected in its title, at the center of Javier Marías's marvelous three-volume novel "Your Face Tomorrow"). Indeed, it is a question that Falstaff probably should have asked concerning his pal Prince Harry. Yet a third theme has to do with the pernicious, destabilizing effect of "Rumour", or "false reports", or "smooth comforts false". The author, Steven Greenhouse, gives justice to the ordinary and average American workers who are being mistreated and exploited here in the U.S. The book contains several stories about the personal struggles of individuals who were all just searching for a better treatment at work.What I gained reading from this book is that this is The United States of America the nation that ended child labor, gave women the right to vote, equality to all, and a bright future for everyone. So, why can't we maintain all of those and strive to better our work environment/salary/life? It is very apparent that our wages are not raising along with the expenses we incur in our livelihood. It is time for the corporation to raise wages and stop messing with our healthcare plans because these are the very things that made the USA the greatest and wealthiest nation around the world from the 1950s onward to the 1990s.Well, I encourage people especially in Business Ethics courses in college to read this book. Also, I'm looking at you UCF Cornerstone course if you want your students to learn more about how to manage workers in business then this is one of those books students should read about in their classes.

This book doesn’t really provide a complete picture of the situation. The economics of the situation of American workers are ignored, unions are revered as pure and incorruptible champions of its workers it claims to represent, and the other side’s reasoning isn’t explained but rather demonized.

What a wonderful book, filled with real stories of hard workers who can't quite make it in modern America. The book clearly shows how the balance of power between management and labor has led to a low-paying jobs and tremendous injustices at the workplace. This is a must-read book for anybody who wants to understand why hard-working, educated people can't find decent jobs. Imagine what it's like for less educated people! Greenhouse gets into that, too.

Then read this book. It is both depressimg and inspiring all at once. The author is admittingly biased, but he does present some solid data in regard to the decline of the middle class in this country. It's too bad that even though the data is out there, many Americans refuse to look at it and believe it and keep voting for politicians who make policy that benefits the very wealthy. The game is rigged and this book exposes it.

This book should be a mandatory read for all graduating high school seniors. They are in for a rude and damaging shock if they think that corporate America will give them a fair shake. I loved the many real stories that the author gives the reader that show time and again how the rich, established business interest will go to almost any means to take advantage of our most vulnerable, hard working citizens. Where is our government? Why is it not protecting us? The short answer is that our government is for sale and corporate America has the money so they buy what they want. I hope that we can find the political will to put back in place strong workplace protections for workers and at the same time, demand that our large companies treat their employees in an ethical, honest and fair manner. This book tells all the dirty secrets and it is a disgusting, heart wrenching story. Not only did our large corporations wreck our economy, they are hell bent on making us a 3rd World workplace!

Great book for voicing the opinion of the working class. However, the book didn't do well to rationally explain the opposing viewpoint, simply demonizing them at every opportunity. The book opened my eyes to some things I really had no idea about, so I'm grateful for that.

Anyone seeking insights into the problems faced by the American worker should start here. Greenhouse writes a terrifying yet compelling narrative of ordinary Americans who have been increasingly squeezed as corporations relentlessly search for profits.

This has implications for the criminal justice system and how we ought to structure society in general.The problem with the book is that the author seems to think determinism is true. A quote from the book reads, "Today, the only philosophically respectable way to endorse free will is to be a compatibilist—because we know that determinism, in every sense relevant to human behavior, is true." However, quantum physics says that the outcomes of physical processes cannot be predicted with certainty because they are not determined with certainty. Despite this, the author goes on and on about determinism although it is inconsistent with quantum physics.To sum up, we are not ultimately responsible for our thoughts or actions -- physics is. But the author should have studied at least a little quantum physics before writing what ought to be a physics book.

I was initially skeptical to even start this book, thinking that free will is one of those philosophical questions “destined” to never be resolved. However, after reading this short book I am convinced that free will in a sense in which I thought I had it is just not there. Since functional magnetic resonance imaging shows that a person's decision to move is registered in the brain several hundred milliseconds before we may be consciously aware of it and our thoughts appear to us without our conscious control, these facts suggest to him that we have no free will.Then what is meditation about? The point of meditation is to watch our thoughts arise and not do anything with them (don't believe, don't disbelieve them, don't be carried away from observing them). It is obvious that this implies there is choice. If one is able to disassociate to some degree from our thinking, therefore not "biting" into our seemingly randomly generated thoughts, we are certainly free to ignore them or, even more interesting, we can discover that the world can be seen without the structure of presupposition.It may be true that if someone has no insight into the workings of their mind, he is pushed, pulled and apparently controlled by conditioned, yet random thinking, peculiar to his/her own unique situation in time and space. But that's like saying meat can only be eaten raw, which was true until we learned to control fire. We do have ways of freeing ourselves from "acting upon" our thinking and this ability will, in fact, generate other thought processes that go beyond our present understanding of mind, either as a "free agent" or as Dr.Harris suggests, a programmed machine.

I'm a huge Sam Harris fan - his "Waking Up" podcast is consistently in my weekly listens and the episode with Eric Weinstein remains one of my favorite pieces of audio. However, this book is a huge letdown. It is either poorly written, intentionally hyperbolic or both. It's like a lazy blog post written after a night of drinking.Sam has a deep background in science and neuroscience, so it was startling and disappointing to see him write a manifesto that begins with a thesis and then back-fills it with nothing but personal anecdotes and off-hand observations to support it. He seems to think of free will as something that can only exist in a vacuum - completely devoid of context, internal or external forces, influences or stimuli. He simultaneously embraces the tenants of determinism while dismissing it. He constantly asks the reader/listener "why did you make a decision in your life?" and then removes all agency from our choices by ignoring anything in our collective experience which could inform that choice.A great example of this comes when Sam reminisces about his past involvement in martial arts and his decision to quit. He deliberately asks "why did I do this?" Instead of reasoning through his mindset at the time, the increased value of other interests, the condition of his environment, his own emotional state, etc, he lazily concludes he doesn't know.The whole book is intellectually lazy and sets this discussion of free will back years. If you're a real Sam fan, do yourself a favor and skip this.

A terrifying notion to many, because of long cultural belief that we exist as independent entities that can garner praise and blame, without which seemingly looms an abyss of anarchy, chaos, nonexistence. But the fact is that we always ARE here and now, no matter what we believe; and right/wrong and good/bad remain as qualities of behavior, the particulars varying from culture to culture. Nothing to fear besides a change of perspective, self-image, loss of false beliefs.Inseparable from the universe, conditioned from the “big bang” to conception to physical death, free will for us is but an illusory concept. Then what is it that makes choices? The entire universe! In fact ‘you’ and ‘I’ exist only as ever-changing thoughts and feelings, moving processes in space-time, present participles rather than nouns: doing, thinking, etc., each in a unique way. Our freedom consists in deserving of neither praise nor blame, since what we do is (unpredictably, to a lesser or greater extent) inevitable. We are all constant change as mortal object of consciousness, stillness as mysterious subject.
