lol @ the anti vaxxer who took a whole 5 seconds to read the intro and decided it deserved 1 star because it did not apparently spew their version of tinfoil. Get a bandaid and go to your safe space.

Found this at the library. Excellent.

It is obvious by the brief on this book that no actual research went into writing of it. I suggest changing the title to Yay Vaccines! as that would reveal this puff piece for what it is. One question: What Gold standard double blind true placebo test exists regarding vaccines?

Yes, this is a classic and a must-read if you're an astronomer, amateur astronomer, or science enthusiast. Very comprehensive and detailed. I do wish there was an updated version... This is not a complaint towards the book at all, just saying it'd be nice to have something more modern since this book ends around the 1950s and a LOT of great technology in telescope design has happened since then! I have seen some more modern Telescope Design books, but these cost like $250 and are very much geared to professionals. If the right person came along and updated this or produced a book on Telescope Designs since 1950, that would be great. I have seen some books come close, but nothing as comprehensive and detailed as this. In any case, if you want a comprehensive history of the telescope from ~1600 to 1950 there is probably no better book. I just looked up the author, Henry King and, apparently as of 2018, he is still around at the age of 103! It's probably too much to Mr. King for a new version. :-) Hats off to you, sir, for a great book that generations have enjoyed.

A Dover reprint of a classic book on the history of telescopes, up to around 1950. Inexpensive, and well-worth having on your bookshelf if you're an amateur astronomer/telescope user.

I was looking for a book with good pictures. This was not it. Pictures in it are really bad. As far as the writing and the information in it, I couldn't comment on that.

Excellent informations for a novice spyglass enthusiast!

Item was delivered on-time and as described.

This is a case where the title pretty much says it all. This is a reprint of Henry C. King's classic , originally published in 1955.The time span covers pretty much the beginnings of visual astronomy through the Mount Palomar 200" Hale telescope. A particularly interesting era is the 18th century , with many notable advances made in glass manufacture and beginning of very large reflecting telescopes in the hands of Sir William Herschel. As the author moves into the 19th century , the names of Joseph Fraunhofer and Alvan Clark take center stage. The invention of many other auxilliary astronomical instruments are also included in this fine work. There aren't many other works for comparison , so --- 5 stars!

After 50 years, this still probably packs more historical fact in one place than any other book on the history of telescopes. But it's also dry reading. Great for the serious amateur, but not for the casual reader. If you're looking for an entertaining historical account, that includes the politics and personalites behind the telescopes in addition to the dryer facts, try Fred Watson's new book, Stargazer: The Life and Times of the Telescope.

Eighteen-year-old Lucy Channing has the responsibility of marrying Dashel Rothchild, the Earl of Westington, so her soon to be impoverished father can maintain his position in 1815 London society. Unfortunately, Lucy doesn’t love Dashel, a young man she’s known most of her life, even though he is a nice enough chap.Lucy’s grandmother, Agatha, the Countess of Polenska, had married for love, a goal Lucy aspires to achieve, but how would that be possible? Shortly after Agatha’s death the impossible happens. Grandmother’s ghost appears to Lucy offering a locket that when opened and the amulet inside caressed, will lead Lucy to her one true love, no matter where or when he lives. The instant Lucy touches the amulet’s cold copper surface her life changes forever. In a blink of an eye she is transported through time and space to Twenty-First Century Central Park in New York City. There she meets the dashing William Godwin, an arrogant boy two years her senior who is also very exciting and oh so handsome.Author RaShelle Workman does an excellent job of showing Lucy’s relationship with William, her education in 2015 America, and the main protagonists’ personalities. Setting descriptions and plot are excellent, however the ending was a let down and the few editorial glitches this reader uncovered were a bit annoying. With that said, Across the Ages is an entertaining book for YA readers to enjoy who especially like love stories and time travel. Across the Ages is the first installment in Workman’s Across the Ages Time Travel Series.

But disliked the fact that it ran out at 65%, and another story plug began. If there was a warning about this, I surely don't remember it.

Quick and entertaining read that will leave you excited for Book Two. Shorter read than expected, with fun and relateable characters who bring you across the ages with them. Will is arrogant and Lucy selflessly humble and independent, with attraction that is endearing in the classic opposites who inevitably attract.Workman has written an engaging story that will keep you enthralled with anticipation for the next in this series. I found myself disappointed that there was only one gripping climax that left me wanting at the end and a little unsatisfied due to its abruptness. Workman has created a light-hearted read that brings the classical era into the modern times and back again flawlessly, with an enjoyable mix of action, romance, mystery and just plain fun!~Book Stalking PR Reviewed

The only negative, a bit of a cliff hanger. I truly hate it when books are divided. In those cases IF I buy the first, book 1, I rately buy any of the rest . If there are 2, I will consider it if there are enough pages to make it worth the money. This is the first time travel book I've read in a long time that has all the elements I like. The main characters were very likeable. Just enough description of the lesser characters to give them life. An interesting story. I have read none like it. I love paranormal, old england and time travel. Perfect recipe for me.

It was different than I thought it was going to be, but the story drew me in all the same. I didn’t want to put it down, and stayed up until the early morning hours reading to find out what happened next. It lost my interest a bit when the main character Lucy and her true love Will were captured by supernatural lions that were controlled by a “god.” I like science fiction and Mythological creatures, but that part of the story seemed a little stretched. Overall it was a good, easy read.

I felt like I was taken back in time as I read. Everything seemed so realistic and right on the money as Lucy traveled forward to the present and everything she had to learn about technology. However, two things irked me. First, the head-hopping. Although there wasn't much of it, that's a huge pet peeve of mine. Second, there was no mention of a cliffhanger, so be warned.

Lucy someone who is being forced to marry Dashel who she has known from childhood but does not love . but her Grandmother Agatha gave her a necklace amulet . that if she takes it is will take her to her true love .. but will her true love be Dashel or will it be someone else ..Will someone who finds artifacts as well as many other things who knows Lucy's true grandfather .. will Lucy want Will or Dashel if she takes her Grandmothers advice or stay with Dashel and accept that she don't love him in the way he needs her to .. anyways probably last book before christmas lol but not the last book of the year ..

Lucy Channing lives in 1815 in England. She is supposed to marry her childhood best friend… Whom she does not love romantically. Holding out that something will change her fate, Lucy’s grandmother comes through with a locket to transport Lucy to her true love. Traveling to 2015 is quite a shock to Lucy, especially when the first person she meets is the arrogant, egotistical William Godwin. The first chapter was completely unnecessary and was only mildly related to the story told in the rest of the novel. I skimmed it so I could get to the actual story being told.Lucy lives a typical life in the 1800’s in her class, but she has atypical feelings for a woman in her time. She thinks she can marry for love and passion and is not satisfied with her soon to be betrothed because she is not in love with him. Because she still loved him as a friend, it wasn’t that big a deal for her to find her ‘true love’ because the match was a good one! She could have learned to love Dashel and had a good life.I absolutely enjoyed every minute and thought Lucy had when she was spirited 200 years into the future. I understood so well what she was going through because it was described in great detail and her thoughts were spot on. She was a traveler in a new land and new time and new world.I didn’t believe in the romance between Lucy and her ‘true love’ William. It felt forced and rushed. The pacing was very uneven and the ending was incredibly rushed and then abruptly left off. I will not be reading further.

“Romance and mystery, war and Prohibition, infidelity and murder, inheritance and lies—the list of ingredients is long and potent in this cocktail of dramatic suspense rooted in early-20th-century Florida . . . Williams’ story, a rich brew of suspicion and intensity, also has a flavor of Daphne du Maurier, with its Cornish roots, dubious housekeeper, and embattled heroine . . . there’s no denying the author’s full-blooded commitment to her intricate edifice . . . Williams spins a good, spirited yarn.” (Kirkus)“. . . A gripping novel of scandal and suspense. Wow. This book was painful for me. I've read all of her publications (including by her pseudonym), and she was an auto-buy. But this book was just painful. Usually the flash forward/back doesn't bother me, but when 88% of the book vacillates back and forth with me not caring what happens to the depressingly flat main character? Well...I just didn't like it.I had tweeted to Ms. Williams asking for a family tree of her books. I never received a reply. When I finished this book and saw that she finally connected it to another...well...heck, I don't even remember that book Beatriz. I read a lot of books. I can't keep all your facts straight when you go back and forth and back and forth. I'm sorry. I really wanted to like this. I just felt like this book was all build up to a "oh wait lemme flip that oh lemme flip that again oh look did you see what I did there? HAHA dear reader I don't care what you think" ending.I'm writing this review so that I remember not to buy any future books. And sadly, I'm pulling her from my twitter authors list so that I don't make the mistake again. That is how strongly I feel. It is only 2 stars because I did manage to finish it.

I first read Beatriz Williams' Along the Infinite Sea, which I thoroughly enjoyed - the characters, the plot twists, the time period. Naturally, I turned to Cocoa Beach, her latest release, to read more Beatriz Williams. Cocoa Beach is a fairly good book, but there is too much going on - too many characters with confusing pasts (hard to determine what is true and what other characters lie/misrepresent about each other). I never really grew to like Virginia - she's so noncommittal, hesitant, and seemingly frail - but (maybe?) strong. I didn't really buy into the love affair between Virginia and Simon (she, too hesitant; he, to quickly "in love" with her).A few of the events in the book were never fully explained: What really happened to Virginia that moonless night on the beach? Why was she given the medication she was given at Maitland? Mr. Marshall's role in the story? The revelation, at the end, of Virginia's father? Lydia's role in the entire book? I read the book not really all that interested in the characters, but wondering what would happen in the end.I also found what seem to be a few editing mistakes: page 105 - Virginia is sitting with Hazel to her left, Johnson to her right - but then Green starts speaking to Virginia. Chapter 29 - the date given is July 22 - yet chapters 28 and 30 take place on July 25.. Did we go back in time for a moment? It seems as if the story is simply continuing, from the hotel in Cocoa (Chapter 28) to the highway outside Winter Park (Chapter 29).All in all, the book is entertaining - I enjoyed the setting - the time and place make me want to read more of Beatriz Williams' books - but I hope the next B.W. book I read is more like the engaging, colorful, and interesting Along the Infinite Sea.

I really enjoyed her books "Tiny Little Thing" and "A Certain Age" but I did not enjoy this book as much as the others. I felt it dragged quite a bit and parts of it were confusing as it vaulted between time periods.I did like the twist involving Simon, Samuel and Clara and did not see parts of that twist coming so the element of surprise was good. However the ending left me totally confused as I have no idea who arrives with Marshall at the end of the book. I did look up online to see if I had missed something in the book that would explain the ending and the only thing I saw was to read her book "Wicked City" to find out the identity of the arrivals. Personally, I found that suggestion a bit frustrating.

''Romance and mystery, war and Prohibition, infidelity and murder, inheritance and lies . . . Williams spins a good, spirited yarn.'' --Kirkus ReviewsFor me it was more a nightmarish yarn!!!! Oh yes it had all the above, but it felt as if it were a nightmare spinning out of control. Not my type of book unfortunately, because I bought it having read other more enjoyable novels written by Ms. Williams. I'm sure there will be other novels written by her, I'll just have to be less trusting of the reviews and more judicious in my choice! To make matters worse, the ending left you hanging in the balance, assuring the reader there would be a sequel. Indeed, if that is the case, I will borrow it from the library (if I even do that)!

I am completely clueless about the ending! The last 20pages had so many " twists" to the plot I was loosing which character was which until by the ending I didn't even care.

Read and loved all the other Beatriz Williams books and was so excited about reading this one. Sadly this one is not like the others. The story is confusing, with lots of unanswered questions. None of the characters were particularly engaging or likeable, and like others I also struggled to believe the love story. A big 'meh' from me.

I hadn't read Ms. Williams last book, A Certain Age, yet, but I knew I had to do that before I read this book because her characters always make peek appearances in future books. I really need a detailed family tree of connections, please. But, I was really glad I did. While I really liked the characters of Sophie and Octavian in A Certain Age, the story itself didn't keep me on my toes like Cocoa Beach did. The entire time I was reading Cocoa Beach, I was unsure whether Simon was good or bad. Would he be Virginia's one true love or her huge mistake. I love how the trials of her childhood (that we learned about in Certain Age), came back to haunt her and her choices in this book. It really kept me on my toes until the last moment. As always, you get drawn in to the time period that Ms. Williams writes about and into her characters lives as if they were your next door neighbor. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and well written summer read.

From the Back Cover

This book draws together established and emerging scholars from sociology, law, history, political science and education to examine the global and local issues in the pursuit of gender justice in post-conflict settings. This examination is especially important given the disappointing progress made to date in spite of concerted efforts over the last two decades. With contributions from both academics and practitioners working at national and international levels, this work integrates theory and practice, examining both global problems and highly contextual case studies including Kenya, Somalia, Peru, Afghanistan and DRC. The contributors aim to provide a comprehensive and compelling argument for the need to fundamentally rethink global approaches to gender justice.Rita Shackel is Associate Professor of Law at The University of Sydney Law School, Australia. Her research program is broadly focused on evaluation and reform of legal and social justice processes, with a specific focus on sexual and gender based violence and the needs of victims and survivors especially women and children. I had to get this book for my BIO 20B class. At first I thought it was just another boring textbook that the professors make you read. But I decided to get the book on a limb. After reading the first four chapters, I fell in love with the book. The author really tries to make the topic, plants interesting, by describing ideas and facts about plants in an interesting and memorable way, and also informs the reader about the wonderful world of plants

I love this book. It is very scientific so it could be hard to read if you are not into that type of book. I think it portrays an idea about plants that many people have never considered. I gave this book to someone else after I was done because I enjoyed it so much.

It's always a good sign to see that someone has bothered to translate a science book from another language into English. Publishers can usually get some English-language scientist to write a tome on the latest discoveries in a more commercially agreeable manner than putting together a translation. So when the translation appears you know the book is good and/or original in a distinctive way.In Praise of Plants by botany Professor Emeritus Francis Hallé of the University of Montpellier, France is such a book. However it is by no means a popular treatise; indeed, if you want to get the look and feel of a botany article in a professional journal, this book provides an entire book's worth! The material is technical, detailed, and uncompromisingly professional. So why has the Timber Press chosen this volume to bring to the English speaking world? Partly because of the international prestige of Hallé, who is an expert on tropical plants; partly because they were able to get a translation by David Lee who is Professor of Biological Sciences at Florida International University; and partly because of the striking nature of Hallé's presentation.Hallé emphasizes the form of plants and how that form has developed evolutionarily from their need to secure the services of both sun and earth while remaining nearly immobile. There are dozens of line drawings in the book, most by Hallé himself, illustrating the differences between plants and animals with the text explaining why these differences occur. For example, because plants are sessile (attached to the ground) they are symmetrical on the horizontal plane, a tree looking pretty much the same from whatever spot on the ground you view it. However in a vertical sense a plant is very different since its crown is in the air looking at the sun while its roots are in the ground looking for water and minerals. In contrast, animals (I'll just quote Hallé so you'll get a feel for the technical language): "have dorsiventral polarity and anteroposterior and bilateral symmetry." (p. 70)Fortunately the attractive and sometimes funny drawings help to penetrate the language for this amateur! Here are some examples of the sort of things you can learn from this book:At the microscopic level, where gravity is relatively "negligible compared to other forces" like "surface tension, viscosity, friction and Brownian motion," (p. 64) life forms tend toward the round and take on the symmetries we associate with astronomical objects like the sun and Saturn. Hallé gives examples of bacteria, amoebas, diatoms, etc. where "vertical polarity simply does not exist." (p. 64) Science fiction writers take note: creatures living in interstellar dust clouds will be more or less round. One of the clear homologies (same form) assumed by plants and animals is in "the external (assimilating) surface of a plant and the internal (digestive) surface of an animal." (p. 51) The plant maximizes its surface area to expose as much of it as possible to the sun and the air, while the animal creates folds and such within its alimentary canal so as to provide a large surface area for effective digestion. Hallé notes that plants resemble fractals externally. (p. 52)The waste products of animals bring forth (to our sensitivities) malodorous compounds as do their decomposing bodies. Hallé explains why this is so on pages 148-151, and why the waste products of plants and their decomposing bodies do not usually offend us; indeed the smell of new mown hay and forest humus or even a compost pile, can be very agreeable. On page 149 he favors us with a drawing of a tree which grows in part upon the waste products of its metabolism stored in its trunk. Next to the tree Hallé has a dog on top of a pile of its excrement, noting that "An animal that stored its excrement would also be capable of becoming very tall."Hallé's love of plants and his deep respect for them, and his life-long experience in studying them comes through most wonderfully in this fine book. Although technical, it is accessible to amateur botanists and just plain old gardeners and lovers of plants with just a little effort.

[copy of my review for Amazon.co.uk] Reviewer: Mr P J Stewart from Oxford United KingdomThe best book on plants I've ever read (and I've been reading about them for more than 40 years). Here at last is a biologist who sees plants for the amazing things they are and not just as something like stationary green animals.Of the living things that we can see, plants make up the overwhelmingly greater part. They create the grasslands and forests and wetlands and the surface ocean conditions in which most animals live, they stabilize the atmosphere of the whole planet, and they are the ultimate source of almost everything that animals feed on. Yet biology, until its recent lurch into molecular studies, has mostly derived from animal models. Hallé cites many examples, such as the fruitless search for plant hormones and the extension to plants of the doctrine that the lineage of reproductive cells is strictly separate from that of the cells that make up the body of the organism.Hallé writes with clarity and gives plenty of concrete examples. He is someone who can decidedly 'see the wood for the trees' - not surprising perhaps in the man who pioneered the exploration of the rainforest canopy using 'rafts' suspended from balloons. He is also often very funny, and the translator has served him well. Hallé has illustrated the book with a large number of his own wonderful drawings. The work is beautifully produced - a gem from every point of view!
