I bought the kindle version for my Mac for a college course, and it does not work at all. Pages are missing, I scroll and get hundreds of blank pages, it crashes, words and entire paragraphs are cut off, and it does not let me navigate through the table of contents. It is unusable.

It's a textbook...so not much to say. I needed it for a class. It was decently priced and shipped quickly.

I am a 3rd year graduate student and this book is perfect for the economics class I am taking.

The book is very nice, it explains the concepts in a very good and easy to understand way.

the mac kindle reader version is unusable. There are hundreds of pages that do not load and are blank, and will bounce back when you try to access from the table of contents.

This collection is a celebration of traditional dishes from Cyprus where Selin Kiazim's culinary DNA is firmly rooted. Cypriot cuisine is a wonderful Mediterranean island melange of Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern flavors and ingredients. The food is fresh, simple, and delicious, not overwrought. The gorgeous accompanying photographs stimulate both the appetite and the imagination.I have a great many Middle Eastern cookbooks, but this one is not a repetition of any of them. There is a chapter of recipes using fish and seafood, but being in landlocked Tennessee doesn't keep me from experimenting and substituting the protein and adapting the sauce, or preparation method to my needs. Lamb can be easily substituted with beef. I am a big fan of sumac, that wonderfully deep red and lemony-tasting spice. If you live in a small town as I do, everything is easily available online. Penzey's is one of my favorite suppliers, but there are many good ones.The recipes are arranged in the following chapters:--Salads & Snacks (14 recipes, including a brunch menu with recipes) Fresh, herbal, and colorful salads and meze components.--Savory Bakes (11 recipes, including breads and savory pastries)--Meat (25 recipes, including fowl, lamb, beef, veal, rabbit. Also hummus, pilaf, and 2 special salad accompaniments) I'll be making these with beef, pork, chicken, and turkey, which is what I have ready to hand.--Seafood (8 recipes) These are of course salt-water fish, but I'll be using some catfish and tilapia to try these, which are readily available to me, or go for frozen. Where there's a will, there's a way.--Vegetables & Grains (12 recipes) Slow-cooked white beans with tomato, lemon, and olive oil are calling my name, Barbecued sweet corn with butter, garlic, sumac, and za'atar reminds me strikingly of roasted Mexican street corn but with different spices.--Drinks (11 recipes, with and without alcohol) Real Turkish tea, raki, Turkish coffee, and a Turkish Bloody Mary I can't wait to try.--Dressings, Bits & Dips (20 recipes) Fabulous dressings, relishes, and a recipe for preserved lemons.--Sweet Things (14 recipes) Traditional cakes, pastries, lovely baked fruits, custard-filled filo pastry, rice pudding brulee. You can also browse by ingredient, if you wish.I've rarely seen a cookbook by a professional chef that is so understandable and accessible to the average home cook. I have not yet cooked from any of the recipes, but I have so many collections from this part of the world and am so fondly familiar with the broad strokes of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cooking that I'm very comfortable recommending this book. It is beautifully done with an introduction to every recipe, which I love. I'm reading straight through, like a novel, while making mental notes about what I will try first: Cicassian Chicken, Black Olive and Pepper Tapenade, or will it be a beautiful round of Spinach & Feta Borek (lovely filo pie)? So hard to choose when everything looks and sounds so good.

Brilliant book, brings the restaurant to life.

This is a beautiful book of Turkish-Cypriot recipes. The fusion of Greek and Middle Eastern flavors makes for some wonderful flavor profiles and the recipes range from decadently delicious, like a smoked bacon and medjool date sandwich, to fresh and light, like the tomato-pomegranate salad with parsley. The dessert section is a standout in particular, and there are even a couple of mixed drink recipes for entertaining (the medjool date, espresso, and fennel martini is a must try). A unique cookbook offering, and the photography is a treat.

This book has such a wide array of stories in a genre that seems to be developing in the U.S. in the last few years. If one has a spiritual orientation, and has enjoyed fiction, it becomes hard to read the kind of books that are oriented towards mystery stories, high tension dramas, tales of romance, etc. They just are rather hollow after your orientation changes. Yet texts on teachings also run out of gas after a while: you know what the map looks like, there's no need to keep reading the manual. Some which are oriented more to inspiration than instruction are still nourishing. Poetry in the spiritual mode is also good but usually just a brief touch. But this collection of fiction presented by this host of different presenters is quite powerful. The outlook is primarily Buddhist but many of the stories are just presenting an aspect of the fundamental questions of existence and the "Buddhist" part does not even apply. It's just looking at our aliveness from many viewpoints. Not everything will be loved by every reader but there is so much variation in the orientation and style that it makes you look forward to each new offering as it comes up. Also, an unexpected gift was that these offerings led me to explore other writings of some of the writers: for example, Pico Iyer, and Francesca Hampton (her "Greyhound Boddhisattva" is stunning. There are many other treats here and the impact of many of the stories is quite wonderful.

Although an engaging title, most of the essays in this book fell short of my expectations. I had imagined that I would be reading about uplifting qualities of Buddhism. However, I found that most of the stories reflected challenges of a "secular world" and they did not interest me. Perhaps my expectations were the problem. For readers who may want to explore some of the characteristics of Buddhism, this book probably won't fulfill that need or expectation.

Fun read.

Since the first time I checked this book out of my local library I've checked it out again so many times that I finally decided to just purchase my own copy. There are many great short stories in this collection and two that blew me away. One I read out loud at different times to both my children and girlfriend and wrote the author a note of thanks.

What's this first-ever anthology of "Buddhist fiction" offer? Editor Kate Wheeler comments how according to dharma, everything's already a fiction; stories represent "a redoubled version of the existential mistake that lies at the heart of all suffering." (xiv) Still, traditions in Buddhism tell stories, and the ones here come from contemporary writers, a few well-known, many humbler practitioners. I preferred the longer stories to the shorter-- they can range from the standout not-quite holiday in Cambodia "Beheadings" by Kira Salek at thirty-four pages and the fine first chapter from Keith Katchtick's ambitious novel "Hungry Ghost" (see my review) to three-paragraph glimpses of insight.I liked the stories that took on the curious predicaments of people trying to learn about Buddhism or attempting to practice it while questioning its estranging qualities in daily life; those by some writers from within the tradition tended to be less gripping, perhaps from insider's situations unfamiliar to me. Some entries appeared to be memoirs rather than fiction. Sharon Cameron's essay on meditation in its disorienting intensity seems not so much fiction as self-dramatization; Anne Carolyn Klein's account of translation appears non-fiction; Pico Iyer's excerpt from his Japan narrative feels factual.Others by certain, higher-profile writers may have been chosen more on their content or the reputation of their contributors rather than merit that a "blind" selection process might have selected, I suspect. Some of these, taking place in monasteries or on retreats, appear aimed at the likely audience already in the know. Still, especially for experienced students and teachers, I suppose many of these entries might satisfy-- the key verb for inclusion Wheeler notes--most readers.Gerald Reilly's title story and M.J. Huang's parable "Rebirth," start off this collection promisingly. Ira Sukrungruang's "The Golden Mix" keeps the oddness of its setting, an animal shelter, and its visitor without becoming cloying or cute-- which in less skillful hands could have decayed. Instead, we get this easygoing, yet unsettling, tale in everyday dialogue and ordinary Midwestern settings infused with a bit of mystery. Such offbeat, without being coy, moments enrich Francesca Hampton's "Greyhound Bodhisattva" and Easton Waller's "The War Against the Lawns," paired well together, as are many entries as arranged by Wheeler.Salek's inquiring narrator takes us into the longest story, "Beheadings," which in the best manner feels as if told to us first-hand, as real life. I take many Big Onion Tours. Love the Group, the purpose behind it and the knowledgeable tour guides. Was thrilled to find the books for sale (also purchased the new York Guide).Great group, great book. Thanks for many, many hours of pleasure.

As a fellow tour guide, I know Big Onion does good work, and this is no exception. As a rival tour guide (New York Like a Native), I'll also suggest that this book, like any guidebook, is no substitute for a live guided tour. There are a couple of errors (but not at an unacceptable level). More importantly, any tour enshrined in a book is already out of date--for example, a tour of Fort Greene & Clinton Hill should address the looming Nets arena complex. And any book has space limits; this omits numerous streets, buildings, institutions, and bars/restaurants/stores I'd want to mention.

A fascinating and unusual dance history book for anyone interested in dance for readers age 10-adult.

I received a copy to facilitate my review the opinions expressed here are my own.This is a wonderful book. My daughter loved dance and at one time was enrolled in eight different dance classes. She could tell me about many of the people who shaped dance in recent years. This book takes us way back to Louis the XIV. This book is the story of twelve dancers who cover the year from the early 1600s to the year 2000. I had not heard of many of these dancers. Their passion for dance was so strong they let nothing stand in their way. In addition to the biographies, at the end of each chapter was a section called “Create a Dance”. This section allows you the reader to create a dance in the style of the dance you had just studied. This is a book I will put on my shelves once I have shared it with my daughter.

How They Became Famous Dancers A Dancing History by Anne Dunkin is a wonderful collection of stories. Each chapter is a story unto itself, featuring twelve of history’s most influential dancers. As the stories unwind, Anne Dunkin tells the journey of each dancer from their birth, through their childhood and into their adult lives. She highlights their home and place in history as well as how each became a world famous dancer. Her love of dance is clear and quite infectious.This book would be an excellent read-aloud. Reading and discussion of each chapter are aided by the brief “lesson” provided at the end of each chapter. Children as young as eight or ten, especially dancers will love this book. Young adults will love the dance history as well as the introduction to world history.Importantly, the book addresses world cultures and the diversity of people. The book explores how people are more alike than different. Each culture created dance utilizing and accentuating body movement, facial movement, rhythms, sound, music, poetry, lighting and space.A beautifully written, historic timeline stretching from Louis XIV in 1638 to Arthur Mitchell in the present.

Dance enthusiasts will enjoy this book very much. Written with the younger audience in mind, adults will find this just as rich in tid bits and history.Wonderful additions I appreciated - the photographs, historical document, and Create a Dance allowing readers to dance to each dancer cited style.The biography, historical and cultural information is enough to pay homage and pique interest further. Some schools and libraries may be put off because it is "self-published" as many people still assume such books cannot be high quality. But this one is truly the equal of any book released by a major publisher. The writing is excellent and the author has done amazing amount of historical research to bring us the stories of these inspiring dancers.
