Amazon.com Review

Amazon.com Exclusive: A Letter from Gabor Maté Dear Amazon.com readers, I've written In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts because I see addiction as one of the most misunderstood phenomena in our society. People--including many people who should know better, such as doctors and policy makers--believe it to be a matter of individual choice or, at best, a medical disease. It is both simpler and more complex than that. Addiction, or the capacity to become addicted, is very close to the core of the human experience. That is why almost anything can become addictive, from seemingly healthy activities such as eating or exercising to abusing drugs intended for healing. The issue is not the external target but our internal relationship to it. Addictions, for the most part, develop in a compulsive attempt to ease one’s pain or distress in the world. Given the amount of pain and dissatisfaction that human life engenders, many of us are driven to find solace in external things. The more we suffer, and the earlier in life we suffer, the more we are prone to become addicted. The inner city drug addicts I work with are amongst the most abused and rejected people amongst us, but instead of compassion our society treats them with contempt. Instead of understanding and acceptance, we give them punishment and moral disapproval. In doing so, we fail to recognize our own deeply rooted problems and thereby forego an opportunity for healing not only for them, the extreme addicts, but also for ourselves as individuals and as a culture. My book, in short, is an attempt to bring light to core issues shrouded in darkness. The many positive responses I’ve received encourage me to believe that I’ve succeeded in making a contribution toward that goal. Best wishes, Gabor Maté A Q&A with the Author Question: The title of your book has its origins in the Buddhist Wheel of Life. In the Hungry Ghost Realm, people feel empty and seek solace from the outside, from sources that can never nourish. In what ways is our culture trapped in this realm? What can society learn from drug addicts who take the feelings of lack that everyone has, to the extreme? Gabor Maté: Much of our culture and our economy are based on exploiting people’s sense of emptiness and inadequacy, of not being enough as we are. We have the belief that if we do this or acquire that, if we achieve this or attain that, we’ll be satisfied. This sense of lack and this belief feed many addictive behaviors, from shopping to eating to workaholism. In many respects we behave in a driven fashion that differs only in degree from the desperation of the drug addict. Question: What makes your book so beautiful is its multi-layered, personal approach. You don’t rely solely on your patients’ stories, but also dig into your personal experience with addiction and the relevance of Buddha’s teachings. What were some challenges you faced when writing so frankly about your own addiction and your family? Gabor Maté: In a sense my personal issues are not personal at all--just human. Once I understand something, I want to share it. There is no shame in having flaws--just challenges to keep learning. Many people have told me how much they have appreciated my being open like that--it helps them be open with themselves. Question: Your book ends on a positive note, with the idea that brains do have the ability to change and grow in adult life and even to heal themselves. Does this undermine your previous assertion that you don’t expect most of your severely addicted patients to get clean? Gabor Maté: No, there is no contradiction here. The human brain is exquisitely capable of development, a capacity known as neuroplasticity. But, as with all development, the conditions have to be right. My pessimism about my clients’ future is based not on any limitation of their innate potential, but on their dire social, economic and legal situation and on the essential indifference of policy makers--and of society--to their plight. In short, the resources that could go into rehabilitating people are now sunk, instead, into persecuting them and keeping them marginalized. It’s a failure of insight and of compassion. We are simply not living up to our possibilities as a society. Read an Excerpt from In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts I believe there is one addiction process, whether it manifests in the lethal substance dependencies of my Downtown Eastside patients, the frantic self-soothing of overeaters or shopaholics, the obsessions of gamblers, sexaholics and compulsive internet users, or in the socially acceptable and even admired behaviors of the workaholic. Drug addicts are often dismissed and discounted as unworthy of empathy and respect. In telling their stories my intent is to help their voices to be heard and to shed light on the origins and nature of their ill-fated struggle to overcome suffering through substance use. Both in their flaws and their virtues they share much in common with the society that ostracizes them. If they have chosen a path to nowhere, they still have much to teach the rest of us. In the dark mirror of their lives we can trace outlines of our own.

Review

“A riveting account of human cravings, this book needs to get into as many hands as possible. Maté’s resonant, unflinching analysis of addiction today shatters the assumptions underlying our War on Drugs.”—Norm Stamper, former Seattle Chief of Police and author of Breaking Rank: A Top Cop’s Exposé of the Dark Side of American Policing“In this brilliant and well-documented book, Gabor Maté locates the source of addictions in the trauma of an emotionally empty childhood, making it a relational rather than a medical problem. Such a radical thesis of cause leads to human connection rather than traditional treatment as the cure. This passionate and compassionate book, filled with scientific evidence and personal narratives, should be on the shelf of every person interested in the pervasive challenge of addiction.”—Harville Hendrix, PhD, author of Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples and cofounder of Imago Relationship Therapy"Dr. Maté’s latest book is a moving, debate-provoking, and multi-layered look at how addiction arises, the people afflicted with it and why he supports decriminalization of all drugs, including crystal meth.… [In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts] reads not only as a lively textbook analysis of the physiological and psychological causes of drug addiction, but also as an investigation into his heart and mind." —The Globe and Mail“In this comprehensive and courageous book … Maté relates, with compassion and honesty, the poignant stories of severe substance addicts – the hungry ghosts, in Buddhist-realm terminology – whom he treats. And it is the addicts’ stories and the clear logic of the latest science and statistics that Maté shares which convince the reader that society’s attitudes toward, and treatment of, addiction must change. …. This 480-page tome, exhausting in delineating and substantiating its causes, remains a remarkably lyrical, engaging read.” —In Recovery Magazine"It’s time to give Maté … the Order of Canada for this erudite and sensitive book about the lives of Downtown Eastside intravenous-drug users, the neurobiology of addiction, and the folly of the war on drugs. It’s compulsively readable and packed with new scientific discoveries about addiction. If you know the parent or sibling of an addict—or the prime minister, for that matter—please give him this book." —The Georgia Straight"I recommend this wonderful book for anyone struggling with the heartache of addiction personally or professionally. Dr. Maté makes the thought-provoking and powerful arguments that human connections heal; and that the poverty of relationships in the modern world contribute to our vulnerability to unhealthy addictions of all manner. His uniquely humane perspective—all too absent from much of the ‘modern’ approach to addictions—should be a part of the training of all therapists, social workers, and physicians." —Bruce Perry, MD, PhD, Senior Fellow, Child Trauma Academy, Houston, and coauthor of The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog"Gabor Maté’s connections—between the intensely personal and the global, the spiritual and the medical, the psychological and the political—are bold, wise and deeply moral. He is a healer to be cherished and this exciting book arrives at just the right time." —Naomi Klein, author of No Logo and The Shock Doctrine"With unparalleled sympathy for the human condition, Gabor Maté depicts the suffocation of the spirit by addictive urges, and holds up a dark mirror to our society. This is a powerful narrative of the realm of human nature where confused and conflicted emotions underlie our pretensions to rational thought." —Dr. Jaak Panksepp, Distinguished Research Professor of Psychobiology, Bowling Green University, Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry, Medical College of Ohio, and author of Affective Neuroscience"With superb descriptive talents, Gabor Maté takes us into the lives of the emotionally destitute and addicted human beings who are his patients. In this highly readable and penetrating book, he gives us the disturbing truths about the nature of addiction and its roots in people’s early years–truths that are usually concealed by time and protected by shame, secrecy, and social taboo." —Vincent Felitti, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California, and Co-Principal Investigator, Adverse Childhood Experiences Study "Dr. Gabor Maté distills the suffering of injection-drug users into moving case histories and reveals how clearly he himself, as a music collector and workaholic physician, fits his own definition of addiction. Informed by the new research on brain chemistry, he proposes sensible drug laws to replace the War on Drugs. Inspired by the evolving spirituality that underlies his life and work, he outlines practical ways of overcoming addiction. This is not a fix-it book to hurry through, but a deep analysis to reflect upon." —Dr. Bruce Alexander, Professor Emeritus (Psychology), Simon Fraser University, and author of The Globalization of Addiction "A harrowingly honest, compassionate, sometimes angry look at addiction and the people whose lives have been disordered by it." —Ottawa Citizen"Gabor Maté’s latest book is a sprawling but fascinating look at addiction that is part science, part diatribe, part character study, and part confessional.… The writing is powerful.… the book leaves the reader with a profound sense of empathy and understanding for some of society’s most marginalized victims. —Quill & Quire"[E]xcellent.… One of the book’s strengths is Maté’s detailed and compassionate characterization of the afflicted addicts he treats…a calm, unjudging, compassionate attentiveness to what is happening within." —The Walrus"Maté’s subjects are the living, breathing embodiment of Canada’s grimmest statistics for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, homelessness, crime, abuse, neglect, overdose, and death. More than merely poor and disenfranchised, they are truly the lowest of the low, reviled by society and demonized by law enforcement. [In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts] is enormously compelling and Maté is admirably, sometimes inexplicably, empathetic to all who cross his path." —Toronto Star"I highly recommend Hungry Ghosts to everyone seeking insight into addiction. Gabor Maté’s masterful and impassioned treatment of the topic is a welcome relief from the tired old thinking that has kept us from dealing effectively with it for the last 100 years." —Gerald Thomas, Centre for Addictions Research, for the Vancouver Sun"It seems odd to use the word ‘beautiful’ to describe a book that focuses, frequently in graphic, unrelenting detail, on the lives of some of the most hopeless outcasts of our society: the hard-core street addicts with whom Dr. Gabor Maté works. Yet that’s the word that came repeatedly to mind as I read In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts. It’s not only the grace of Maté’s writing, though that’s certainly a great part of it. It’s the sense of compassion that infuses the entire book, the author’s continued faith in and affection for the men and women with whom he works, even when he is the victim of their drug-fueled abuse, racial epithets, and thefts. Maté offers no easy fixes (pun intended), but does offer hope and understanding." —Hal Goodman, The Record (Kitchener, Cambridge, and Waterloo)"In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts looks at addictions, how they work, who experiences them and what can be done.… The book is a survey of scientific evidence on addiction, but it is haunted by Maté’s patients who are wrestling with poverty, violence, mental illness, drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, the authorities, their pasts. We read about the depths of addiction, but also the persistence of humanity under the worst of conditions.… That the well-off and the destitute are considered together in this book reminds us that addiction transcends class." —The Gazette (Montreal)“I highly recommend In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts to anyone interested in deepening his or her understanding of all types of addictive behavior. With Dr. Gabor Maté’s help, the foundation is being made to reexamine how to treat addiction from a new premise that engages and honors the heart and soul of humanity.”—HealthyNewAge.com“[Gabor Maté] has sought to draw a map for human understanding of people scorned, neglected and persecuted by society.”—SeattlePI.com“In Hungry Ghosts, Maté compellingly tells the often desperate and heartbreaking stories of his patients, and calls for a new drug policy paradigm that is grounded in both science and compassion.”—Real Change News"[In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts] is a taste of a different kind of victory—over our own impulses to leave 'undeserving' souls outside the human circle of affection and good will."—Crosscut.com“[In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts] shows an unflinching look at addiction… Dr. Maté makes observations that cut through all the myths and misinterpretations about addicts and how they live… There are many nuggets of wisdom and insight throughout the book. Readers can literally pick up the book and leaf to any chapter and begin reading—and learn something valuable. It’s never boring, never condescending, never too much to read.” —Addiction Treatment Magazine“Dr. Gabor Maté has made an important contribution to the literature on drug use and addiction… Maté doesn't just rely on anthropology and anecdote. He takes the reader instead into an extended look at the research on early childhood development and identifies messed-up childhoods as the key indicator of future substance abuse (as well as many other) problems. It doesn't have to be as extreme as some of these cases, but Maté makes clear that a nurturing early up-bringing is absolutely vital to the development of mentally and emotionally stable human beings… This is good, strong, compassionate, highly informed reading. I heartily recommend this book to anyone with an interest in addiction, addiction treatment, early childhood development, or drug policy.”—Drug War Chronicle“As a person who has struggled with addiction and worked with recovering addicts, I’m pleased to see that someone is bold enough to write holistically and compassionately about addiction. My hope is that this book gets talked about and utilized in treatment circles worldwide.”—iCreateHabits.com“A very useful book for any of us who seek to bridge the gap between Buddhism and Western psychology.”—Integral Options Café“Dr. Maté approaches addiction with a new attitude and U.S. doctors and medical caregivers should listen up.”—Daily Kos“In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts is a valuable book: one that will repay the time and energy of anyone looking for a deeper insight into the haunted world of addiction.”—Best-SellingBooks.com“[In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts] will challenge and change your views on addiction… Compared to other books I have read written by physicians, Gabor has a deep humbleness about his role and actions. He looks not only at the lives of his patients but at his own shortcomings. I devoured this book page by page—it is more than a book on addiction, it is on what makes us human.”—Ex Libris“[In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts] is quite unlike any book or documentary I've ever seen about the topic of addiction… This book allows the reader to become a spectator of the treatment of addicts—the people considered on the bottom level of society.”—A Book of Days“In the Realm of the Hungry Ghosts calls for a sharp departure from the crime and punishment model of treating drug addicts.”—DrugRehabilitationThatWorks.com“Dr. Gabor Maté, a Vancouver-based physician specializing in addictions explains in his book In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts that criminalization and coercion do nothing but perpetuate the War On Drugs… Dr. Maté further explains that a far better way to approach drug addiction is through a process called harm reduction, which has more to do with compassion and empathy, not ostracism and punishment, and which encourages a gradual reduction of addiction.”—The Ithaca Journal“In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts provides essential reading for anyone who has ever been a parent, fetus, young child, child care worker, teacher, or physician… [Gabor Maté’s] empathy toward the addicts he treats is compelling, as he links degrees of neglect and trauma described by these hapless, unloved patients to his early upbringing. He has scrutinized his own issues by entering the realm of twelve-step, cognitive treatments that have allowed critical shifts in his own behavior.”—San Francisco Medicine Magazine“In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts looks at the roots and ramifications of addiction (and not just to illicit substances). He approaches the subject from multiple angles, showing that addiction originates and plays out in personal feelings and experiences, body chemistry, societal structure and cultural attitudes.” —Beams and Struts“The stories are raw and [Maté’s] ideas are sometimes controversial. He presents them in well reasoned language accessible to the lay reader.” —A Strangely Insane Blog“The book opens with specific stories of addicts who Dr. Maté has worked with and interviewed. He not only gives us a brief history of what the person suffered, but describes his interactions with a compassion that many people, addicted or not, rarely experience. He neither blames the addict nor bans them to pathetic victim hood – he brings out the ultimate humanity in each person… It’s rare that a book will take a subject such as a crippling and controversial social issue and make it accessible, even more rare that a book on this subject provides an uplifting vision of hope. I recommend that everyone read this book… [it] feeds the heart as well as the mind.” —M. M. Sullivan, The Vapor Trail Gallery“Dr. Maté presents addiction not as a discrete phenomenon confined to an unfortunate or weak-willed few, but as a continuum that runs throughout (and perhaps underpins) our society; not a medical “condition” distinct from the lives it affects, rather the result of a complex interplay among personal history, emotional, and neurological development, brain chemistry, and the drugs (and behaviors) of addiction. Simplifying a wide array of brain and addiction research findings from around the globe, the book avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting a thorough and compassionate self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness.” —Book Galaxo“Gabor Maté’s latest book effectively demolishes the belief that addictions arise from chemical imbalances, genetics, or bad choices… In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts condemns society for depriving human beings of what they need to thrive and then persecuting and punishing them for using drugs to relieve their pain… well-written, engaging.” —Dissident Voice“In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts is a poignant and illuminating treatise on the nature of addiction. Maté, a physician in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, has been treating poor and homeless people addicted to various drugs, particularly cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine, for many years and in this account his insights into the physiological, sociological, psychological, and political-economic nature of addiction are stunningly elucidated… exceptionally clearly-written and readable… Too many books are described as essential reading, but for anyone who has ever been touched in any way by substance abuse or other addictions, or for anyone who knows someone who has, and especially for anyone dealing professionally with medical and policy issues related to addictive drugs, this book simply must be read. Its importance cannot be overstated.” —The Erowid Review“If there is one theme the readers of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts will take away with them is the persuasive argument the author presents that the present-day 'war on drugs' is both a war on victims and a flawed social policy. It is without merit and will fail. Governments, especially in the U.S., have gained nothing in this exercise of futility except garnering a higher percentage of incarcerated individuals than any country of the world… Recommended with enthusiasm.”—The Primal Psychotherapy Page“In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts looks at the epidemic of addictions in our society, why people are so prone to them and what is needed to liberate ourselves from their hold on our emotions and behaviours.” —Women’s Health Matters“[Gabor Maté], a front-line professional combating addiction in Canada, questions the premise that addiction is a choice that people make. If people are diseased or predisposed or making a moral compromises through their own free will, then society is allowed to simplify a complicated issue and avoid any share of the responsibility. For instance, the thesis of this book criticizes the criminal justice’s unscientific assumption that drug addicts are culpable because they choose to do drugs. Does that make sense – people want to, choose to be addicted?” —Addiction Magazine

Apparently, I bought this 4 years ago. I have absolutely no memory of every buying it. I can't find it in my library of paper books and I don't have a Kindle, since I much prefer my nook.

This book really opened my eyes to the suffering of others and a whole world that I didn't know anything about. I thought I was a compassionate person, but reading this I see how judgmental I've been, toward myself and others. While alcohol and illegal drugs have never held much interest for me personally, I now see addictive patterns in my own life and the destructive role that coffee, tv, Internet, toxic relationships, my own stress hormones, and even reading have played in my own life as I attempted to manage and avoid my disrupted internal state with external objects. I am excited about the future possibilities for taking better care of myself and taking a more understanding and helpful role in the lives of others.

This is not a book for addicts. This is a book for friends and family of addicts who want the addicts' actions explains through a zero-blame lens focused on the lowest common denominator of the addict community. I found the first half, which focused on psychology, very interesting. I found the bit on epigenetics especially interesting and relevant. Then Mate spends several hundred pages proposing government housing, free drugs for addicts, and safe injection sites. He never proposes who will be paying for this. Surely not those of us who struggle with addiction every day but still manage to live very productive lives. He doesn't suggest how to pinpoint what in one's past led to addiction-prone personality and he does't even begin to suggest what to do now as an adult in order to begin to move on. He relegates the addict to methadone maintenance and government housing. His lens is understandable given his very narrow band of experience. But not all of us are so decrepit that we crawl to your office in a state of psychosis begging for a script. We walk among you. We are you doctors, lawyers, and financial advisers.Mate tries to find common ground by calling himself an addict. He is addicted to purchasing classical music CDs... And while he acknowledges that this is a "white-glove" addiction, it is still an insulting comparison. Tell me, Mate, have your compact discs landed you in the hospital and in prison? Have you lost weeks of memory holed away in your attic with the stereo on? Should have just left that bit out, in my opinion. Finally, he does not address the plethora of existing treatments that themselves involve substances but that are proving effective every day. Psilocybin is controversial. Fine. But not even Ibogaine?

I ordered this book because I have several friends and family members whom I've watched battle addiction. It has impacted my life to see addiction take control of theses loved ones lives; in addition, some paying the ultimate cost, their life itself. Addiction not only impacts the addict themselves, but all who's lives touch theirs. This book brings to light a new way for me to view and think of addicts. It takes a new look at how we view addiction wrongly, as a medical problem and addresses some of the why's one may become an addict, ranging from early childhood emptiness, abuse, and so on. He backs up his claims with scientific evidence, research and the personal narratives of many addicts. I found the book to be a refreshing take on addiction and one that is quite insightful. It is well written, and was able to capture my full attention. I'd recommend it to all, but especially those who battle addiction, of any kind, whether it be drugs, alcohol, sex, work, wealth and so on; in addition, the many whom are casualties of loving and addict, be it spouse, child, family or friends.

I highly recommend Dr. Gabor Mate's in-depth and insightful account of his work as a doctor specializing in treating individuals with serious substance addiction. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I am inclined to purchase his other books that tackle related but separate subjects. Dr. Mate does an excellent job of describing addiction as a process that is the result of environmental circumstances that infants and children endure. The author goes into a significant amount of detail describing the impact that these environmental circumstances have on brain chemistry and functioning, and how these early traumas evolve over time into full blown substance and behavioral addictions. Mate shares a generous number of case histories of his patients (in some cases the patients insisted on their real names being used instead of aliases) as a means to further illustrate the addiction process in action. Dr. Mate goes to great lengths to describe how the addiction process is responsible for every kind of addiction;,whether it be the serious substance abuse that his mostly indigent patients are struggling with as well as behavioral addictions, such as gambling addiction, sex addiction, shopping addiction, workaholism, and the many varieties of behavioral addictions that we've come to recognize. Dr. Mate opens up to describe how the addiction process unfolded in his own life, resulting in overachievement hunger, workaholism and an addiction to classical music CDs. The book is a comprehensive survey of the addiction process, including his critique of the "War on Drugs" and suggestions for more enlightened and evidence-based strategies for treatment. Even though the book contains a great deal of technical information, particularly in its excellent explanation of the brain chemistry and psychological features of the addiction process, Dr. Mate's prose style is very engaging and quite readable. For anyone seeking an up-to-date survey of recent research findings about the addiction process and/or a compassionate and honest overview of the individual and collective challenges presented by all kinds of addictions, this book is an excellent resource.

I was not aware of A. Aubrey Bodine as a photographer until quite recently when I saw this book in a catalog. We are big fans of the Western Maryland Railway and when I saw that the WM was featured in this book, I had to have it. His daughter has produced a splendid digital library of his very skillful and artistic photographs for the Baltimore Sun. Some of the ones featured in this book were also published in the 1950s in a book written by Harold A. Williams, Jr.: The Western Maryland Railway Story. I am sure the reproduction in the 1950s book did not do justice to his beautiful images, knowing the printing standards of the time. In the Schiffer book, there are superb deep blacks and fine gradations of black and white shades, some of which is undoubtedly due to good scanning values used to produce the files for printing. Other railroads of the Baltimore and Maryland area are also included. I highly recommend this book to railroad photography fans and any lover of fine photographic books.

This is one of the best railroad books I’ve ever seen. My husband is the collector but I couldn’t put this book down myself. You get lost in these photographs, they are amazing. Engaging - even captivating.

Excellent B&W train art photography by an acclaimed master!

Exactly what I wanted, did not disappoint!

This is a loving tribute by Jennifer Bondine showcasing the talent and art of her father's photography. Since he worked for the media, his work has a strong documentary feel rather than simply beautiful pictures. But that eye for moment is complemented by true talent - from the choice of lenses, angles, and subjects to darkroom wizardry. And although we only get a small view of the world here (e.g., 3 decades of Maryland-area trains and the people who worked on them), the work is inspiring on many levels.Bodine operated in the 1950s to the 1970s, a time when steam was transitioning into the diesel era due to economic considerations (steam engines had to be built for specific routes but diesel engines were universal - making economies of scale more appealing with diesel). Trains that used to be classified by the number of wheels in each axle through the Whyte system (e.g., 2-8-4 steam engine) were now being called by names such as the EMD F7 covered wagon. Bodine was there documenting this transition from steam to diesel, often contrasting the smokey steam engines against the sleek new diesels. For me, there were two important appeals to this book. As a photographer, I greatly respected and appreciated the artistry and skill that was clearly evident in each photograph. From the choice of lenses (wide angle was a favorite of Bodine in order to magnify the majesty of the trains and create visual interest through the distortion) to the variety of compositions, it is all beautifully done. Bodine used juxtaposition, lighting, golden mean, curves, subject priority, rule of thirds, and angles to perfection. From an image of railway workers pushing carts, of which two are in a pool of light and two are out of it, to images of standing engines juxtoposed against their station in the background. There is so much to really love and appreciate here.I also found a lot to respect when examining the pictures and imagining what was done in the dark room. Even a large format camera cannot capture a wide dynamic range of light like our eyes can; overcast skies or blue skies turn pure white in black and white - creating empty space that is glaring and distracting. Bodine had no issues with manipulating the photos in the dark room - adding clouds, changing light and dark values, and really showcasing his own artistic and creative talents. This was at a time when documentary photography was being pushed to be 'unretouched' and raw, especially in the 1960s. In instances, you can see the post processing work in many of these images - in an era before photoshop, clouds in the sky may overlay some areas of the foreground subject. But if I had a wish, it would be a comparison of the before and after post processing to really showcase Bodine's artistry. Also equally important is that we have an important period of American history here. The war was over, America was transitioning from East Coast to West Coast, the trains were changing from steam to diesel, and technology was morphing how trains were used. Images from the 1950s make a stunning contrast to the end of the 1960s, when we go from caring of the steam engines to junkyards ripping them apart for scrap. As someone who grew up with a father who loved to photograph trains as a hobby, I found this all so rewarding and saw many parallels to what I experienced with trains, 20 years later. I grew up with the transition of the covered wagons to the ubiquitous EMDs and GEs of today. Where Bodine was capturing the F7s replacing the steam engines, in the late 1970s we were capturing the elusive disappearing F7s in favor of the GE AC6000CW types. Where Bodine was using cumbersome wide format cameras, my father had the advantage of smaller film cameras with color film. And where Bodine's images are works of art, my father's were raw documentaries of the time and era.If there is one detractor to the book, it's that it covers a very small geographic location - Maryland -and really only one train line. There's a lovely introduction that gives the history of that train line and also more information about Bodine himself and the era in which he worked. Every image is stunning, there is detailed information on nearly every photograph in the back, and though the book is fairly short, each image is full page (some frustratingly crossing the spine, though, so the comp was hard to appreciate). In all, great for photographers, historians, and especially train enthusiasts. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

A beautiful book of vintage and historical train photographs. There is some text with a short biography and background of the photographs. Anyone with an interest in Trains, photographs and history will enjoy this book.

This is a beautifully illustrated book on trains as captured by the famed photographer A. Aubrey Bodine. This book helps us all remember the history and legacy of the Western Maryland Railway, as well as the glory and wonder of all railroads and the hardworking and dedicated people who made it all possible.

Beautiful and informative. I imagine it would make a great gift and a great coffee table book. Very, very beautiful.

Nolo Press has the best, most informative books. Had to purchase this when a tenant abandoned the house and left most of their furniture and belongings behind. It took me through each step in the eviction process and notifying them to come get their things and when I could dispose of them.

All the forms you need for taking care of the unpleasant situation that made you look this up.

Absolutely necessary for CA Landlords. The companion book on Landlords Law Book: Rights & Responsibilities is great, too. I had to refer to it many times for more detail. If you are a landlord in CA who isn't using an attorney, get both!

excellent for information relative to eviction - makes reference to more CA law books by same author for other landlord issues. good value

I was unable to type the information onto the forms once I had scanned and downloaded them.

Excellent. California specific Landlord law book.

This book has a major mistake which caused for my paperwork to be rejected by the court, and I had to refile. It costed me one week of a lost time. I am surprised to know that attorneys wrote this book, but obviously don't fully know all the law.

Didn’t really need it, all information was free online. Good reference book.

The main reason why I bought the book is because I like Dan's blog.I consider my Python level to be intermediate. I have completed reading 100 pages(1/3 of the book). Although the content is decent, this feels like it is targeted more towards beginner(not an absolute beginner) than intermediate level. I am hardly learning anything new that is already not in Fluent Python (which is a big ass book in comparison but provides better understanding of the Pythonic tricks) or in Raymond Hettinger or David Beazley’s videos on YouTube.I will update the review once I finish reading the entire book.Update: I finished reading the book and I still stand by what I said earlier. If you have time and patience, go with Fluent python. Other than the new style string formatting, rest of the content is mostly covered in that. That does not mean this is not a good book. I really loved some of the chapters like generators, iterators. The examples were more simple and easy to understand. Overall, I found this book to be more of a tutorial than a reference material. Mainly because I use the excellent pymotw website for the Collections part of the book.

I really like this book. Why? I think the author and the content is very honest. By that, I mean you get what you expect when you buy this book. I have been coding for over 30 years but using Python for the past decade on and off (mostly off). I have always been amazed by students or colleagues who seem to have this uncanny ability to "master" a language like Python. I have purchased many Python books over the years but none of them really felt like the fit. This one does. I feel this book will take from up from beginning (functions, for loops, arrays, conditionals) to a more advanced programming using programming constructs beyond the basics. I also like the authors videos, blog and overall attention to detail in preparing this book and his honest marketing. I also like how this looks on the Kindle and I appreciate his recent video describing his efforts to make sure the reader has a good Kindle experience. Bottomline, for $10 (currently on sale) this is a bargain on the Kindle! Grab your copy today...

I consider myself an 'early intermediate' Pythonista, with about three years of self-taught experience in the language, bolstered by all the good resources out there online. I first ran across Dan's page/blog through a Twitter link, I think, and have really enjoyed his Python Tricks emails. Some of them aren't news to me, but there have been multiple instances where they've given me a key insight into the behavior of Python, or an idea that's helped me improve my projects. As he notes in the Introduction, this book grew out of the Python Tricks emails, and it really shows. Dan has a knack for constructing code snippets that illustrate Python concepts in very few lines, and also for writing extremely clear descriptions of why they behave as they do. Further, even though Dan has years of Python experience, it seems clear to me he hasn't lost the sense of the ways in which Python can be confusing to new learners. I've only sampled here and there from his Buffet at this point, but have already gained two new concrete pieces of knowledge: bytearrays are mutable whereas bytes are not; and all it takes to create an abstract base class is to use metaclass=ABCMeta and decorate as needed with @abstractmethod. Even though I'd looked at the Python documentation for both of these before, I never quite understood either of them. But, Dan's phrasing and presentation made them crystal clear on my first read. One additional thing I like about the book is how Dan has included bits and pieces of his philosophy on Python, programming, writing good code, etc. Some people might be turned off by the editorializing, I suppose, but I really appreciate that the book provides these sorts of "meta" perspectives. All in all, an excellent resource for someone with modest to moderate Python experience looking to round out their knowledge of some of the more subtle features/behaviors of the language.

I'm an advanced python user and have worked at several startups, Google, and Microsoft, but I still found several tips in here that were new to me, and many others that I only knew because I'd learned them from colleagues when I worked at Google. For instance, I would usually just define an __str__ method on my custom classes and be lazy and not implement __repr__. But the book points out that if you want be lazy, just define __repr__ alone, as the default behavior of __str__ will call your __repr__ function anyway. I should have known this already but somehow it's a little thing I had missed when learning python. There are lots of bits of info like this: some you'll probably already know, but you might be surprised by a couple little tricks. One outstanding feature of the book is a short recap after each section, giving simple rules of thumb to to follow. This cleared up a lot of uncertainty for me about some python best practices. I really like the book "Fluent Python" as well, but this one has more simple and practical suggestions and was a very quick read.Highly recommended!

Book is great, but when you sign up for the daily tip email, it's just spam. Every single day. It's unfortunate. That much spam every single day for the same thing is not necessary at all. I thought I signed up for an email list with a python tip every day, and that's not the case. So read the book, but don't sign up for the email list. There is nothing but spam, and if you want to learn something, you will have to pay.

If you are programming in Python, doing a lot of cut and paste and not fully understand what you are doing, this book may be for you. If you are looking to do to the next level without becoming a complete expert, this book may be for you. If you want a comprehensive book however, this book is not for you. But for those striving to have an intermediate level of ability, this is a great book.

We did not find this book very up to date throughout our travels. Sri Lanka is changing so fast that it really needs to be updated more often. Many things had changed since the book had been published. We found Trip Advisor much more helpful throughout our travels.

I bought this book as a review before I headed on my journey to Sri Lanka. During my trip I found that I used this book more and more and was shocked with the accuracy of the details it gave about sights and placec to see in Sri Lanka. The authors provide great advice on places to stay, eat, and the culture!

I just returned from a trip to Kandy, in central Sri Lanka. This Lonely Planet, like others, packs a wonderful amount of info into a concise and pretty easy to navigate little pocket-book.When I was in Mexico, previously, I'd come to expect LP to list nearly every restaurant, hotel, etc. in the area. In Colombo and Kandy, I found that while it had a good enough selection that one could go ones whole trip only on recommendations from the book, there were also a number of stores, restaurants, etc which were really worthy of note (imho) that were not included. In short, a great book, a worthy travel companion, and a wonderful fallback, but not the all encompassing guide to everything that I sometimes expect from LP.

Like all Lonely Planet guides, it is clearly written and consistently laid out. We are now really ready for our trip. I can't say more until we come back.

I've used Lonely Planet guides for three decades, spanning such diverse destinations as North Africa, SE Asia, the South Pacific, New Zealand, Central America, and Turkey, and have generally found them to range from acceptable (Central America) to excellent (most of the rest). Unfortunately, LP's Sri Lanka guide is such a terrible piece of garbage compared to those, or any other guidebooks I've used, that the authors should have their word processors cremated. It's not that the prices are far higher than indicated; that's to be expected when foreign tourism rises sharply after 30 years of civil war, and domestic tourism booms with a rapidly-developing economy. It's not that some accommodation isn't as described; places age and management changes. It's simply that the breathless description of the wonderfulness of the various sites, and the time required to enjoy them, is so at odds with the reality that you can't believe the authors were ever in the country. For instance, LP raves about Unawatuna ("a place of dreams") and Mirissa (quiet serenity), beach resorts in the south. Well, Unawatuna might be a place of dreams if you're in a Lariam nightmare, but in reality it's a strip of horribly overdeveloped sand that you can only catch glimpses of between wall to wall buildings while dodging loud, smelly traffic on the dirty little lane that deafens most of the accommodation. The water, during the calmest time of year, is murky, and if you don't watch out, you'll be hit by a boat while stubbing your toes on the rocks.Mirissa, portrayed as a get-away-from-it-all paradise, is a yards-wide strip sandwiched between the murky water and a frantically-busy two-lane highway carrying six lanes of traffic, all beeping signals at each other from early until very late. Like Unawatuna, it's describes as having "excellent" snorkeling, when in fact there's one tiny murky tidepool at the best of times. It's the same with the historical sites. The ancient city of Anurhadapura is described as being on a par with Bagan in Myanmar or Angkor in Cambodia, and worthy of 3-4 days. When I spoke to the "concierge" at our guest house, he said we'd see it all in 5 hours, and wouldn't want a second day. Having spent a week at Angkor without feeling satiated, I laughed, but he was absolutely right. The same held for the other Cultural Triangle locations, all of them brutally overpriced. The "cultural capital", Kandy, was also described as being worthy of several days, but after seeing an evening cultural performance and the Temple of the Tooth on the first afternoon and evening, there was not much else there. The "wonderful" English architecture of Nuwara Eliya can be viewed in two easy ho-hum hours, not appreciated for days.It goes on and on. Everything is overstated, and the time allotments (4 weeks for the Cultural Triangle, 3 weeks for the south, 4 weeks for the hills) are frankly insane.Sri Lanka is a pleasant but unspectacular country to visit. Unless you're a surfer, the beaches are nice to look at, but useless for most other water sports, and they're being badly developed. The food is good if you enjoy curries and seafood, and the people are friendly and intelligent to deal with. The tea plantations are uniform carpets of green that cover hills that have been denuded to accommodate them, and the air is often too smoky for viewing anyway. Accommodation is rapidly headed toward being bad value. The National Parks like Yala see far too many visitor vehicles to maintain the natural experience. You can easily see all there is to occupy you in three weeks or less.I usually keep my LP guidebooks when I leave a country, or at least leave them for the benefit of the next traveler. I took my LP Sri Lanka, tore the pages out, ripped them to shreds, and wished I could make the authors eat them. This book goes beyond being useless. It misleads and misdirects you in a way that borders on the cynical. Don't buy it, and look with the greatest of care at the upcoming 2011 update. I'm betting it's a slightly reworked pile of the same BS.

The misinformation in this book could ruin any trip! Directions to bus or train stations? Not here. Travel times? Nope. Directions to most important places seem to be "ask a local." Thanks!

Great stories. It would only be better if each book was on one CD. As it is, there is a little carry-over from one CD to the next, so you can’t just pop in the CD and start listening, you have to skip a few tracks to get to the beginning of the next book.
