But Amar also explores why Justice Hugo Black of Alabama was one of our most important justices, why Justice Robert Jackson of New York is so highly respected by court insiders, and why Justice Kennedy's Northern California upbringing made him so open to recognizing gay rights.Amar is perhaps America's most trusted living legal scholar. His work has been cited over 30 times by the United States Supreme Court -- by both liberal and conservative justices -- on issues ranging from gun rights, to criminal procedure, to the structure of the Constitution. Amar famously writes not just for justices, judges, and lawyers, but also for journalists, legislators, government officials, and keen high school students. A fantastic look at the way regional birthplaces and politics throughout the course of our history have influenced Supreme Court decisions. Meticulously researched and documented by one of our foremost constitutional historians and educators.
Fairly interesting, but not something I would want to read for pleasure.
Professor Akhil Reed Amar "polishes" his brilliant, America's Constitution: A Biography by reviewing the historic supreme court cases through the years that have refined our understanding of the Constitution. He reviews for the reader the method he will use in the preface then summarizes it again in the last chapter to, "enable readers to appreciate three interconnected elements of American constitutional federalism: "geography", "states as building blocks" and "local, state and regional identity". Professor Amar encourages a read of the Conclusion as a precursor to the book. And as a garnish, baseball fans will enjoy Amar's occasional analogies, allusions and lessons!The book reads a bit as the basis for a lecture; furthermore a lecture to a fairly learned audience. In some chapters (e.g. ch. 2, Hugo Black) the reader encounters numerous, sometimes strings, of Supreme Court decisions that impact the thoughts under discussion. Beyond Marbury, Roe, and Brown, etc., most people (?, certainly this reader) are not even slightly conversant with the decisions that Amar leans upon to support his conclusions. No matter, read on a kindle a highlight of the case name is only a Wikipedia click away... except that gets distracting, then tiring, then annoying. Amar is reluctant to 'spoon feed' the neophyte in some chapters of this book. Just a sentence or two of explanation for the related decisions would enlighten and smooth the read, but the professor expects a certain level of conversance! There are other chapters (e.g. ch. 6, Tinker) that are very readable with competing points filtered to a minimum and the relevance of precedents explained for the lay-reader. In other chapters the demonstration of legal "proof" depends on multiple examples (e.g. ch.12, New Jersey): the examples can seem repetitive for the lay reader.Professor Amar's writing is always clear and lucid. He is eminently capable of sorting out complexity for the reader as demonstrated in America's Constitution...... The issue is intent, not capability. This book's presentation is somewhat inconsistent and may (?) be aimed at a more scholarly, or informed audience than his previous book. 3-stars, "It's OK", is a tepid review for a very admired author and a certain expert on the constitution, but it is not meant to impugn the content of the book. This offering, however, will be best received by those who are reasonably well versed on the Court's decisions, or those who are patient enough to, 'come up to speed' while reading the book.
Another excellent description of an aspect of the U.S. Constitution by Prof. Amar.
Easy to read for a complex subject. I like that the author identifies his personal ideas. Will read again in the future.
I enjoyed this presentation very much and look forward to reading others in this series. Very readable and quite entertaining.
I am not a legal scholar, but in general I found the explanations of the interpretations of constitutional interpretations quite understandable.The book has a clear structure and interesting and significant examples.
