James Finley is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Santa Monica, California. Jim Finley is like a glacier, with only a little bit protruding above, but untold depths beneath the surface. I loved how succinct Finley is in this book. His writing is beautiful, packing a great deal into a sentence. I found “Merton’s Palace of Nowhere” to be an exceptional summary of Merton. Merton is hard to summarize, but Finley pulls it off because he shares the spacious non-dual mind of Merton, who was his mentor at Gethsemane Abbey. Probably my favorite line from the book… “Prayer never touches us as long as it remains on the surface of our lives, as long as it is nothing but one more of the thousands of things that must be done. It is only when prayer becomes ‘the one thing necessary’ that real prayer begins (pg. 17).”-Amos Smith (author of Healing The Divide: Recovering Christianity's Mystic Roots)

You won't get a wordy scholarly discussion from me. No need to overstate or embellish. This book is a treasure of simple direct thought. I've been reading Merton for years. He fits very comfortably beside my Buddhist texts, writings on the Tao, and the Chinese mountain poets. I find Merton's unique synthesis of insights from Christianity and Eastern thought to be true sustenance. I read and re-read Merton and use this particular commentary as a support to morning meditation. Merton's view is fresh and powerful... His teachings ring with gentle truth. Here, James Findley's loving condensing of Merton's core teaching is a true Gift. Brief... but rich. Authoritative...but intimate. This is a wonderful book.

I found that this book offers a solid core point that I could grasp: we are naked and nothing creatures, so we are constantly tempted to make our selves something, creating a false self. God wants us to be our true self, which starts at being one who is loved by him (something we cannot create, but just receive).There are other points around this main point that at times I could grasp, but these points mostly seemed ethereal. I need to read this book a few more times before I'll grasp these points.So I recommend the book to those who've been on the spiritual formation journey for a while, but I would not recommend it to people just starting out. A better book to start with would be Brennan Manning's book, "Abba's Child" in which Manning does cite Merton a few times. "Abba's Child" basically makes the same point as this book, but in a much more accessible way.

This review is on the Kindle edition. The book is excellent and is a must read for any person interested in Thomas Merton's spirituality. I have read many of Merton's books, and I could have used Finley's incites in all of them.Now the Kindle edition. The navigation is nearly non-existent. This would not be an issue if the book was reduced in price, but it isn't. There are numerous citations in the text referring to the expansive bibliography and notes. Hit any of them and all you will do is advance to the next page or return to the previous page.The book also has no formal Table of Contents, but considering that Finley chose not to title the sections and chapters, a formal Table of Contents would have limited use. I do wish that Finley would have titled the sections and chapters, he certainly organized the information well enough.I rate my book reviews on their content, not their navigation.

If you feel as if you’re reading the same Christian monologue over and over with every book you read, it’s time to move on to Finley. This is the advanced class (a class that teaches you that this thing called obedience is less work than we ever imagined, but that is just the beginning of the journey). This book in addition to Christian Meditation changed my life and the way I think about God and how to gain true presence with Him. Reading it in the morning during quiet time is how I best recommend it.

I can't recommend this book enough for those interested in gaining a solid foundation from which they can build a genuine spiritual life. I have a master's degree in divinity from a Catholic seminary and wish I'd found this book a lot sooner. It's not a new book, published in 1978, but is truly timeless in the truths it so clearly reveals in such an orderly and readable manner. Thomas Merton, I'm sure, is very happy with this humble, gentle and powerful synthesis of his teaching. Basically Mr. Finley clarifies the tremendous danger of creating false images of ourselves that trap us in our spiritual growth, the goes on to help us free ourselves from these "idols". By humbly emptying ourselves of self images and meaningless self-serving, egoistic obsessions we can discover our true self rooted in and saturated by the person of Christ, our true self. I'd personally recommend accompanying this book with a practice of Centering Prayer (check out centeringprayer.com or .org).. The combination of the two could turn your spiritual life around for the better.

I would agree with the other reviewer that this book is the most rewarding book I have read to date. I'd been interested in reading Merton and learning about his thought for years since so many of my spiritual "mentors" were themselves "mentored" by Merton. But he was so prolific and so deep I wasn't sure where to start and was looking for a kind of "Merton for Dummies" book! This book is that and so much more.Sometimes people's gift is in creative, original thought (Merton in this case). And sometimes people's gift is to be able to understand another's thoughts/teaching and to synthesize them into a coherent whole. This is Finley's gift. I don't know that I've ever read such a well laid out book that took me bit by bit in a logical order through a complex subject allowing me to safely arrive at the end (where if you'd tried to start me there I might have misunderstood it).I can't highly recommend this book enough if you are interested in spirituality.

I didn't even know she was releasing a new book until 3 days ago. Amazon emailed me, I downloaded and finished it 1 day ago. I discovered Jane through the curse of the gods series. I immediately went and read everything she had available. I haven't disliked a single one. Minor complaints here and there because I'm a whiner but nothing big enough to turn me off of her writing.This book is no different. Loved it. Good characters, good plot, good pace. And so funny as always. It's not often you find a book filled with humor. Humor is not an easy thing to convey. Most books you get one or two zingers. Jane keeps the humor going while not over-shadowing the story.The statues, especially Lucifer were just hilarious. If he gets his own spin-off series, I'll be reading that. All of the characters were funny and easy to like.Teensy complaint. Maybe not so much a complaint as it is an observation. Some areas in the beginning were leaning a bit in the information dumping direction. And I started to skim over the detailed descriptions of runes. That'll probably come back to bite me later on. Not a huge deal but some of the detailed world building and such just seemed unnecessary. I'm sure she did it for a reason though, so I'll be eating my words soon enough.I recommend this book. A little romance, a little action, delightful characters, well paced.

Charming was absolutely charming in every opposite way possible!! Lilou is not your typical heroine; she’s better because she has no idea what she’s really doing, but she goes with it and it works pretty much every time!!! What are rules?! Lilou has no idea because she plays by her own rules, she makes them up as she goes and if there are rules, she’s broken all of them, but they’re useless anyway, right? She did the impossible for Cinderella in a short time, and she bonded with the psy trees without knowing and fixed everything for all the Hollows with a cool, new rune. And let’s not forget, Arlo Demarcus, the ice cold, most powerful warlock there is!! With one look at Lilou he was enchanted and became her magic teacher and lover and guide and friend all at once! They are so perfect together. He’s so powerful and her power is probably immeasurable; they’ll do wonderful things together. I can’t wait for Disobedience!!! I’m dying to read more about Slade and Malevolent and see how Lilou, Arlo, and Sidra play into this next book in the Bastan Hollow Saga!!! If you love fairytales then you need to read this book! If you love romantic comedies with a hint of fantasy and paranormal, then you need to read this book! If you love reading books in general, then you need to read this book! Trust me, it’s that good.

OK, first and foremost, I'm a sucker for fairy tale retellings. Always have been. I love seeing the spin that authors put on classic stories and Charming did not disappoint! But it was so much more than just another retelling. I love that the story while having elements of the classic tale was fresh, the characters were fantastic and the world was unique. Lilou and Arlo are so amazing together, she is uncompromisingly her own person and everything she is and does turns his ordered world on its head. They work so well together and their chemistry is hot. Slade, Beth and the Goblins are some of my favorite supporting characters ever. I haven't laughed so much since the last time I read The Curse of the Gods series and it was glorious. Beth has to be the best Cinderella character I never knew I needed in my life. I thought at first I'd feel bad for her having to marry the prince who is an unrepentant playboy, but the way she handles him is hysterical. And the role playing Goblins are...everything, lol. I want them to show up again! I can't wait to see what Jane has in store for Slade. He was such a cool character, I really hope that his story is as epic as Charming turned out to be. I will for sure be grabbing Disobedience and binge reading the heck out of it when it comes out!

I have several of Jane Washington’s books stashed away in my kindle/bookshelf but haven’t had a chance to read any, expect when I started this beauty. What. A. Read. I’ve heard many great things about Jane’s writing and really enjoyed this book. The characters all had their own personality’s and were fleshed out perfectly, the storyline was unique and I LOVED the humour in it. There were a few places where the crudeness was a tad unnecessary and didn’t add to the story, but apart from that, it was a good read. From the reviews I’ve seen, a lot of people said they didn’t understand the relationship between Arlo and Lilou, that it was forced/no development/random/rushed, but it wasn’t like that for me. They had a connection straight away which slowly built up and everything felt natural to me. But everyone processes things differently I suppose! 4.5/5 stars.

Charming is definitely one of a kind and I can't wait for the next book in the series. This is definitely not what I was expecting. This is not a Cinderella retelling it's a story all of it's own that will captivate you from beginning to end. I was hooked and couldn't stop reading. This book will throw you some surprises and more. I honestly don't know how Jane keeps doing it. If she were a baseball player she would be a homerun hitter. I'm never disappointed when I buy one of books because I know it's going to be AMAZING.

Every time Jane Washington starts a new series I’m at the edge of my seat waiting for the awesomeness that is her story telling to begin. Charming was unique, funny, random, different and freaking funny (did I already say that?). Lilou Adler has to be one of my favorite heroines. She was unusually unusual in the very best way. I absolutely loved her sarcastic motor mouth ways. When you coupled her with the stoic icy hotness that is Arlo, there was no way that this book could be anything but amazing. I can’t wait for the next book of the series!

In some chapters (e.g. ch. 2, Hugo Black) the reader encounters numerous, sometimes strings, of Supreme Court decisions that impact the thoughts under discussion. Beyond Marbury, Roe, and Brown, etc., most people (?, certainly this reader) are not even slightly conversant with the decisions that Amar leans upon to support his conclusions. No matter, read on a kindle a highlight of the case name is only a Wikipedia click away... except that gets distracting, then tiring, then annoying. Amar is reluctant to 'spoon feed' the neophyte in some chapters of this book. Just a sentence or two of explanation for the related decisions would enlighten and smooth the read, but the professor expects a certain level of conversance! There are other chapters (e.g. ch. 6, Tinker) that are very readable with competing points filtered to a minimum and the relevance of precedents explained for the lay-reader. In other chapters the demonstration of legal "proof" depends on multiple examples (e.g. ch.12, New Jersey): the examples can seem repetitive for the lay reader.Professor Amar's writing is always clear and lucid. He is eminently capable of sorting out complexity for the reader as demonstrated in America's Constitution...... The issue is intent, not capability. This book's presentation is somewhat inconsistent and may (?) be aimed at a more scholarly, or informed audience than his previous book. 3-stars, "It's OK", is a tepid review for a very admired author and a certain expert on the constitution, but it is not meant to impugn the content of the book. This offering, however, will be best received by those who are reasonably well versed on the Court's decisions, or those who are patient enough to, 'come up to speed' while reading the book.

Another excellent description of an aspect of the U.S. Constitution by Prof. Amar.

Easy to read for a complex subject. I like that the author identifies his personal ideas. Will read again in the future.

I enjoyed this presentation very much and look forward to reading others in this series. Very readable and quite entertaining.

I am not a legal scholar, but in general I found the explanations of the interpretations of constitutional interpretations quite understandable.The book has a clear structure and interesting and significant examples.

I usually wait to finish reading a book before reviewing it...but this one, even twenty pages in has provided so much useful info already.Geared toward tourists.Could use a few sections for people who might want to spend an extended period of time there instead of a vacation. Many people go to the Philippines not because they are on vacation but because they are either related to people who live there by marriage or soon will be. To be very specific....a lot of people reading books like this want to know where to stay and how to set up shop when visiting the family while still having American style accommodations for one to three months or more....for wife and kids. And where to bring them, and local family for fun.Or even where to live and what to do if you are married and it will be months before your wife or even your wife and child can relocate. Or even split your living between US and Philippines as some may do (actually a lot may do).

I was born and grew up in the Philippines. I've been residing in the US for almost 50 years and have been back twice which I spent mostly in my province of Palawan. My husband and I are taking our 2 Canadian-born sons, their spouses and 5 grandchildren this coming Char school break. I'm at a loss where to take them but after reading this book , I suggested to our sons to buy this book, share with their families and we'll plan our itineraries with the help of your very informative travel tips. I recommend this book to anybody who has been away from home. It was a "Refresher" course for me and we're all looking forward to our trip.

It's taken me a while to read this book which I bought last year but we are finally considering visiting he Philippines. I think the tips in this book are particularly helpful. What to wear, language, getting around, what not to be offended by etc. For anyone doing more than a fly in/fly out stay-at-a-hotel-chain holiday this book is a must! Spend some time to get to know the real Philippines - not just what you see in a travel magazine! Great work - very glad I bought it!

This is a no nonsense book about travelling to the Philippines. After reading this, you will want to go and explore the many wonders of this country. It is well-written by someone who knows the country very well. The book is concise but comprehensive enough filled with tips on what to bring to places to explore to the best times of the year to visit and most of all the food to try. For someone who grew up in the Philippines but now living overseas, this book made me learn new things about my home country that I did not know. When I visit, I usually go to the popular spots and of course the malls! This book will definitely give you a different perspective on how to enjoy your next trip to the Philippines.

I would recommend this to any travelers who are looking for a personal tour guide that hits all the tourist destinations with common sense caveats and postcard photos. I thoroughly enjoyed the authors love for the destination which is lacking in a lot of other guides that can brie overwhelming to someone just wanting an armchair tour of the islands.

Having relatives in the Philippines always helps, but over the years I have found it more enjoyable to take excursions without company. This book provides tips on safe travel, places, and helpful ideas. For beginners it would be a helpful book to have. For experienced travelers it adds one more tool in their toolbox.

For that matter, it seems silly to offer this novel in exchange for a review. People who have read the first three installments are probably going to buy the fourth. I can’t imagine why anyone would start with this one. Perhaps they think that the reviewers will be compelled to go and buy the first three, but having been filled in on the “back story” through frequent information dumps, I’m not likely to go back and read a book that has already been summarized.In Cibola Burn, the universe has been opened to colonization through discovery of an alien constructed time portal. Colonists have jumped the gun and established a colony on Ilus, also named New Terra, without the consent of the United Nations or the Outer Planets Association (two competing governing bodies). Details of this settlement are apparently part of one of the preceding books. The UN has granted a charter to a multi-national corporation to explore and settle the planet, as well as exploit its valuable lithium deposits. This obviously creates conflict between the rogue colonists and the corporation.James Holden, seemingly the hero of the series, has been appointed as the mediator of the dispute. Upon his arrival, several acts of terrorism have already been perpetrated by the colonists and escalated by the corporate security forces. However, the planet presents its own set of dangers as both natural forces and long dormant alien constructs come to life.This is pretty run of the mill science fiction, with little to differentiate it from hundreds of other such stories. Perhaps I would feel differently if I had read the first three books of the series, but regardless, if you are looking for space opera, Peter Hamilton does it far better.

UPDATE 3/30/2017 --- Yesterday I got an update email from Amazon saying that the audio narration has been updated:"""Dear Audible Listener, We are contacting you because you have reviewed the title “Cibola Burn” by James S. A. Coery (sic). The original recording has now been replaced with a new performance by Jefferson Mays. If you own this audiobook, simply re-download it from your library to access the new recording."""I downloaded the new narration and rejoiced in the sweet tones and characterizations we have all come to enjoy from Jefferson Mays. I almost cried. Although I am 2/3 of the way through the book, I am happy to listen to the rest via audio now because of this.OLD REVIEW CONCERNING PREVIOUS NARRATION:This review pertains to (mostly) the audio narration which is the worst audio narration I've listened to for any book in my life. I'm about 30% through this book at this point. The first three books have great audio narration and I was really looking forward to listening to this one. Where and why Amazon/Audible decided to hire this brainless and belligerent narrator is beyond me. Firstly, the narrator obviously hadn't listened to the previous narrator's reads of the previous books to provide any sense of continuity. Secondly, this narrator tries to 'act' the characters and does a really poor job. Unfortunately, he reads this book like it is a dime store Western/Romance novel. All the men have western cowboyish accents and all the women are read as either breathy or breathless voices. It is beyond distracting. And, even worse, this new dumb narrator's acting interpretation of Christian Avasarala is a out of breath woman on the verge of hysterics rather than the appropriate biting cynical political genius with an Indian accent. Those characters he deems not of the cowboy or helpless woman type of voice he gives either a super poor australian accent or some mixture of transylvanian/slavic (seriously sounds like a bad Dracula voice for someone with a middle eastern name). Even more unfortunate is that he has decided to provide an American Indian accent to the ghostly character of Miller. WTH!!!So, if you enjoy cheap western novels and want a book of the expanse series read to you in this way, you will have no problem with this book. If you've listened to the narration from the previous books and expect the same 'feel' of narration, skip it for this one. You'll go stark raving mad. There is hope however, for the subsequent novel narration as it reverts back to the first narrator. From wiki: This narrator's name is Erik Davies (you should be fired) and is only for Cibola Burn and the novellas Gods of Risk and The Churn. All the others are the narrator Jefferson Mays.Dear Amazon/Audible: If you switch narrators in a series, your quality control (I'm sure you have none) needs to require that the new narrator provide narration continuity. I wish I could get my money back for the audio purchase of this book. Please hire Jefferson Mays to record narration for Cibola Burn, Gods of Risk, and The Churn to replace the TERRIBLE narration of Erik Davies. Erik Davies should only be hired to record narration for awful cheap dime store Western novels. If the authors are reading this and have any pull, ask Amazon/Audible to fix this. You almost lost me as a reader.As far as the novel goes, it is a slow starter and more boring and world building type of novel than the first three. So go into it with that in mind. Maybe by the end something cool will happen but I'm not there yet.I got pulled into reading/listening to the novels by watching the TV series. Has been totally worth my time until I encountered this exceptionally poor narration.

Characters are uninteresting and most are infuriatingly unrelatable. The main antagonist is a flat out psycopath that doesn't really seem to have a self-serving agenda. Unlike in abbaddon's gate this characters is cold and calculated but his agenda isn't self serving. He talks about leaving a legacy as if he is some sort of founding father but is just a pawn to the company.The book constantly drones on about the terrible living conditions of the characters to the point you start feeling it yourself. 90% of the book was about how tired someone was or the detailed technical plan of a high risk low reward mission. There were also no characters in the book to help vent the readers frustration of the situation. No Miller to shoot the bad guy in the face before the villain justified his crimes, no Anna to yell out at the frustration of the situation, no Bull to take control of a situation that was spiraling out of control. No one seemed to take any decisive action. Everyone was pussyfooting around the issue except the bad guy who really didn't care making the situation worse.To make it worse it seems that the author (for whatever reason) decides to skim over the most important plot points in the book.***SPOILER ALERT***(I need to vent here)Seriously! WTF! Did Miller really die for real? How can he die? I thought he was omnipresent. He didn't die when the station was shut down, why did he die when the planet shut down? If he did really die why did he sacrifice himself to save the people when his main purpose was to find out what happened? Why hasn't Elvi mentioned the mysterious object in the dark spot? Why did the planet explode? Why did Holden scrape off the protomolecule off his ship to destroy it? Why in gods name did the book end with Bobbie when all these factors are still up in the air?

I finally stopped leeching off the various online resources (d20PFSRD, Archives of Nethys, etc.) and bought myself a copy of the CRB. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality. The binding is the best I have seen for any book in my collection -- not just RPG books, I mean ALL my books. I felt like I was flipping pages from a beloved and well-worn tome I had owned for years. Of course, the print quality is top notch, and the information within is exhaustive and organized in a naturally intuitive manner. This, I think, will be the first of many Pathfinder volumes to be added to my shelf.

I thought I'd post specifically on the quality of the book's construction, because it was a bit of a gamble when I bought it for myself due to lack of info:The Pathfinder Core Rulebook as well as the Pathfinder Bestiary, hardcover editions, have sewn bindings. Why is this important? It means the books will still be intact after years of use. In short, if you're in to Pathfinder, the hardcover Pathfinder series seems to be a good investment in terms of longevity.Regarding the book's contents:In theory, any player's handbook contains enough information for both players and GM, simply because it lays out the core mechanics necessary for the players to interact with the game world - Fleshing out the world and interactions is up to the GM. In other words, you don't need a monster manual, a spell manual, a specific GM guide, a campaign setting, etc. - just the core handbook.However, those accessory books are helpful in giving you starting points as you try to bring your world to life - pre-made creatures and spells that have been play-tested and balanced to work well within the rule system. If players or GM are uncomfortable with bending rules as a method for balancing gameplay or with creating new monsters/spells/items/etc., these accessory books become essential...and the game becomes very expensive, too.The Pathfinder Core Rulebook offers plenty of info on race, class, items, skills, spells, and even devotes a decent chunk specifically to game-mastery. The only thing it really lacks is monsters and monster creation, so I would recommend purchasing the Pathfinder Bestiary I if you've purchased the Core Rulebook and decided you like the system. Bestiary I includes many, many, monsters as well as info on creating your own.Basically, the Core Rulebook gives you the structure of the rule system and enough info to get the ball rolling, and then it guides you in using your own imagination to build on that system...if you're comfortable designing your own creatures without a specific guide to do so.So...to come up with your own stuff, or to rely on accessory material? The cost of additional books aside, this is essentially a question of confidence and competence. If the players are willing to trust the GM to bend rules as necessary to balance customized gameplay AND the GM is competent enough to do it, there is no problem. But many players feel it is essential to rely on pre-made material that has been play-tested, and that's where the other books come in (along with endless arguments over little details). Thankfully, with Pathfinder you need only the Core Rulebook and Bestiary I for a basically fully-defined, 90% fudge-free campaign. If you're willing to fudge as necessary, all you need is the Core Rulebook.If you're new to tabletop RPGs, expect some rule-bending or you'll get so bogged down that it will lose its fun. If you're a new GM, expect to HAVE to bend rules once in a while because no matter how many accessory books you purchase you're going to run into situations that aren't adequately covered by existing material.The #1 thing to keep in mind: The Core Rulebook is a GUIDEbook. It's ok to modify the rules - nobody's going to get hurt. Hopefully.

I am VERY VERY new to RPG pen and paper style games. I barely got into it maybe a year ago. I recently started reading different games. So I am not even an amateur yet. This particular game seems extremely similar to D&D. As a newbie I can barely tell the difference. I have had it explained to me and it makes sense but without the explanation I wouldn't have noticed. With that said I do enjoy this book greatly and even bought a race guide with it. If you are super amateur like myself this may appear to be the same as D&D... if you are a more seasoned player you will probably get more out of this. Either way... fun read

After getting the Beginner's Box, we were all hyped up for more. We're ready to try some new adventures and campaign settings, as well as have more in depth characters! I love the detail it includes for the classes and races, among other things, getting you a step further into the Pathfinder experience without throwing you all the information of the advanced guides. Everyone is excited to get going!

This will be a short review, but a positive one. This book is like a D20 Player's Handbook on steroids. I loved the D20 system, consider it the pinnacle of gaming rules (and I've been at it since Chainmail...), and I was saddened by the horrible edition of D&D that replaced it. This goes back to the basic D20 rules, gives you the classes, the spells, the feats, the skills, the items, all you need to kick off a campaign. I say it is the PHB on steroids because it also includes many of the rules that you'd find in a DMG as well. All that's missing is monsters. If you want a great fantasy game, want to suppliment your D20 stuff, or just want to replace the D20 without buying decade old used books, Pathfinder is the way to go. Great art, great rules, well written, sturdy book (though the pages are a bit thin and don't seem like they will wear well).
