The Orchard, a Memoir, is a great book. Last week I was on a long flight back to San Luis Obispo from Omaha and I had this book with me, a gift from my mom. I started reading it and totally forgot about the flight, never noticed the movie they were playing. A good number of times tears were just pouring down my face and I'd wipe them away, wondering if the people on the plane around me thought I was a bit crazy. But I tell you, I'm crazy about this book! Honestly, I read a good deal and this is easily one of the most interesting, deepest, most powerful books I have read in years. Although true, a memoir, it reads just like a fine novel. I was so totally absorbed reading this rare gem of a find, that it was difficult to realize that the author had died some 20 years ago--she, Adele Crockett Robertson, seems so real, so full of life, so gutsy, so immediate. Briefly, this is the story of a young girl, a smart, educated girl with a good head on her shoulders, who loses her job in the great Depression, and goes back to the family farm to try and save it from the bank. The many people in the book all come to life perfectly and there are surprises aplenty. I am a gardenwriter (author of Allergy-Free Gardening)and have farmed myself, and I appreciate what Adele went through. I would also add that this is no doubt the best picture of life during the Depression I've ever come across. I plan to review this book every place that I can, because to my mind, this one is so good, so readable, so well worth reading, so enjoyable, so satisfying, that it completely deserves to be a best seller. Do yourself a favor and read this marvelous book!

This book tells the story of Kitty Robertson, a single woman trying to keep up an apple and peach orchard to help pay the bills and avoid having the bank take over the familyhome during the Great Depression. Her work ethic is admirable. She lives in a home she can barely afford to heat, puts up with frozen and bursting pipes and learns how to manage a tractor, caustic chemicals, and a questionable group of peddlers (she used her father's target pistol).Kitty's story of the difficulties of managing the farm moves at a quick pace, and I found myself absorbed in the telling of her story. If she had written more volumes, I'd have purchased all of them. At one point in the story, after she worked frantically to pick apples to keep them safe from a pending storm, she falls asleep in the house and wakes to find the thermometer outside reading 19 degrees below and worries that the apples stored and packed in the basement might be freezing. She slides down the basement chute in the barn around 2:30 in the morning to avoid letting in the cold air from the basement door and finds the temperature at 24 degrees. Some of the apples have frozen and have gone from $2.00 a crate to being worth no more than a dime per bushel.Kitty's manuscript was discovered by her daughter years later, under a pile of papers and a phone book. This story seems to parallel some of what is happening with the economy of the United States now, with the foreclosure crisis and the loss of jobs. Kitty was a Radcliff graduate who gave up her job at the Hartford Museum to take over the family farm. Later, she would find herself employed at the Sylvania factory as an assembly line worker.Kitty said, "I never felt hopeless unless I was hungry or cold or had nothing to do." She always had something to do, which made her life rich, earning her a great deal of personal and public respect from those that knew her or learned of her years later.

After a gap of two years, I just finished re-reading The Orchard. This is a true, powerful story of honesty, courage and human decency. The writing is hardly noticeable, so clearly does Robertson convey each scene of her story. The challenges she faces would be too great for one person and a great dane, yet again and again she rises to meet them. And each poignant moment is conveyed with the simplicity of a master craftsman. Never does she miss a step. She carries us along with her feelings and the feelings of her characters, even those of the great Dane, Freya.Sometimes when you finish reading a book you want to say "Thank you" from the the heart. In this case, I want to say Thank you both to the Adele Crockett Robertson, and to her daughter, for the Forward and Afterword that provide a setting for this gem of a book. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

This book is a gem. Ever read one of those books that you don't want to end? Lost to know what to read next because all you want is more of what you just finished?? The author, Adele Crockett Robertson, writes movingly and beautifully about her lone struggle as a young, single woman to keep her family's orchard farm on the Cape during the 1030's. Her prose is about a simpler and harder life (the depression) and is heartachingly poetic in her description of the beauty of her farm, her loyalty and memories of her father, and her appreciation of the farm as her heritage. It is also about grit, determination and the personal rewards of hard work. The only disappointment is that the author, Ms. Robertson, failed to continue her memoir. I was bereft when it came to an end.

I picked this book up during a discouraging, lonely period in my life, and it really helped me put it all in perspective. The beautifully clean, understated writing paints a gripping picture of the enormous challenges Kitty Crockett faced and met during the Depression as she struggled to save her family's apple farm from repossession by the bank. It's a tale of true heroism. It gives a real feeling for the hardships that people faced and for the reserves of the human spirit that people drew on to endure these hardships. Can you imagine having to do grueling physical labor from sunup to sundown without having enough to eat, never being really warm in the winter, being constantly in debt, and yet getting up each day and doing what has to be done? Kitty Crockett is one of the most memorable characters I've ever met in a book.

I thought this volume was much better than volume 1. The art was great, especially depicting the action sequences. Writing still felt a little rushed but not as bad as vol 1. My main complaint was all the time Captain Marvel spent in despair and mourning over Bean, who she barely spent time with, compared to the indifference from Puck and Squatch who was with her the majority of Bean’s frames. This could be just because vol 1 was rushed but it made Captain’s emotional arc feel forced and asking a lot of the reader to fill in the blanks. Other than that I thought the other characters’ banter and emotions were really well written.Edit: Read through it a 2nd time. I think the art and writing works so much better in this volume because of how much they concentrate on these teenage cadets. Margaret Stohl can write for awkward teenage characters very well but seems to struggle with adult characters, especially ones with strict military backgrounds and leadership positions. I think this artist and writer team up would be great for a Spider-Man or Ms. Marvel book or a spinoff of the alpha cadets, but the Captain Marvel series needs to be passed off to another team.

This arc was a mess. It suffered from problems that would be solved by people talking. It had lots of woo-woo handwavium to elaborate the next plot crumb. Some of the tactical battle stuff made no sense, but at least all the punching looked cool? Also this was part of the garbage Captain Hydra plotline. Avoid.

“The Mighty Captain Marvel – Band of Sisters” collects issues #5-9 of the latest in a long line of relaunches/retitling/resomethings of Carol Danvers’ onagain/off again comic book.I remember Carol Danvers from back in the 1960s as the female security chief at the rocket base that Captain Mar-Vell of the Kree was tasked with infiltrating, and I have read most, if not all, of her series over the years, and even when she was written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Dave Cockrum in their heyday, she didn’t sell (though I bought her comics).Now that Marvel has promoted her to being their flagship character and invested her with awesome if undefined powers and a rubbish costume, she still doesn’t seem to sell well.She’s not a dull or uninteresting character, and writers and artists of various qualities and styles have all had a go and failed. I have no idea what the answer is, but this volume is not it – how can you make a giant space invasion dull?The story and characterisation of the excessively large cast are handled well, but the artwork lets it down – in space, there are no ‘universal’ light sources, so the artwork needs to reflect this, and not be lit like you are in the middle of a film studio with lighting everywhere.Then there’s the famous admonishment – “In space, no-one can hear you scream”; this is because it is a vacuum, and therefore sound effects are blatantly ridiculous.Apart from that, it just seems visually a bit dull.Then there’s Carol’s job as a military/authority figure – surely this is not really Marvel’s ‘type’ of character. Apart from Captain America, who has spent as much time rescuing America from politicians as he has from evil empires, and Reed Richards or Professor X, who are as much father-figures as authority ones, everyone else has been, if not anti-establishment, at least frowned upon by the moral majority or Jonah Jameson.And she was undoubtedly on the wrong side in the recent Civil War II.Is it time for another makeover, or just time to pick another female face of Marvel?Where’s Sue Storm when you need her? (Hmmm… didn’t Disney just buy the studio who have the film rights to the FF?)Anyway, apart from all that, this volume is basically about what went on outside the space-shield during the Secret Empire business, followed by an issue of shore leave with most of the other badly-selling female characters.

About the Author

Bertolt Bertolt (1898-1956) was the most influential German dramatist and theoretician of the theater in the 20th century. Also a poet of formidable gifts and considerable output, Brecht first attracted attention in the Berlin of the 1920s as the author of provocative plays that challenged the tenets of traditional theater. Forced to flee Germany in 1933 because of his leftist political beliefs and opposition to the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler, Brecht and his family spent 14 years in exile in Scandinavia and the United States. Although he tried hard to become established in the United States, Brecht failed to make a breakthrough either as a scriptwriter in Hollywood, California, or as a playwright on Broadway. Two years later he moved to East Berlin and remained there until his death. In the 1950s he became an internationally acclaimed playwright and director through productions of his plays by the Berliner Ensemble, a company based in East Berlin and headed by his wife, actor Helene Weigel. John Willett (1917-2002) was a noted scholar, author and translator. From the outset he was the prime editor and translator (with Ralph Manheim and others) behind Brecht in English. He was involved in the planning and translation of the programme book for the Berliner Ensemble's celebrated first visit to London in 1956 (the year of Brecht's own death); in 1959 he published the first general study in any language, The Theatre of Bertolt Brecht; he translated, edited and introduced the enormously influential Brecht on Theatre (1964); and he was a founding member of the International Brecht Society and sometime editor of its Yearbook.

Pretty much everything that Brecht wrote on the theatre, his own, the theatre world around him, and the plays and dramatic theories of others. Anyone researching matters of Brechtian theatre according to BB need go to no other source. Especially interesting are the insights one might glean out by Brecht on how his rather idiosyncratic and ever-evolving ideas of the stage might be fitted into Stalinist socialism that he embraced.

First of all, it should be mentioned that there is no theatre untouched by Bertolt Brecht's theories and practices on theatre. In the 21st century, the way we look at theatre has its roots in Brecht's Aesthetic.Now, this book is like the Brecht Bible essentially. Packed with all his views and opinions on the theatre, society and culture around theatre, acting, etc. Its big, dense and the type set is small enough to make you cry sometimes because he just never seems to stop.I had a hard time following and understanding it, but that is no fault of this edition, but more so the long winded thoughts of Brecht. The core of his ideas and points are there, they just need to be searched for. Sometimes he makes it very clear what point he is trying to make, but sometimes you have to wade through his thoughts until he nails it for you. I think for having never read it before, I wasn't sure what was the most important part of some of the arguments he was making, but overall I know this is a valuable book to own. I think it requires guidance from someone who has studied Brecht a lot, which I fortunately had. There is a Brecht for Beginners I think out there that is a GOOD COMPANION to this book.

Good collection of Brecht's views on theater theory.

This is a huge selection of essays written over many years. This not necessarily something you may want to just sit down and read straight through. If you do, you will find many contradictions over the years. At any rate, it is a very formative collection of Brecht's work, and certainly a must have for anyone who studies theatre or the arts in general.

Great for quotes by Brecht, and for understanding his version of absurdism, though ther are some strange "interviews" that don't accurately quote him, but thry are entertaining.

This is an insightful text explaining Brecht's views on theater through essays and notes. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about Epic Theatre.

Great book. Brecht is a good writer with intelligent ideas.

I only had a week to prepare for this test, so it helped me understand how the test is designed. Could have better test samples, some are confusing and on the kindle version it is hard to move between test answers and test. Honestly its a 4 star product, but I dropped an extra one due to the uselessness, commercial stance (pushing test prep materials) and poor formatting of the Toefl test itself. I consider myself fluent and my score reflects that, but there is no way to do well on this test unless you study how to do it with paid materials. I strongly believe a minute of conversation with any school official could, instead, give a better english proficiency insight and save me a couple hundred bucks.

Another great add to the series. Yes, Ryder and Lucien finally get to tell us what they have been up to. If you're like me you wanted to know about these two when we met them in Broken Halos, and knowing it was going to be a crazy ride. Ryder keeps hitting rock bottom and trying to figure out how to get back to the happy person he use to be. He's strong and full of passion! His intense determination will leave you breathless. Lucien has been lying his way through life for years and feels stuck in a horrible situation. His love for Ryder is combustible and he can't turn away. He learns that he's not alone as he thinks and fights for love. Add these two together and their love-hate enemies to lovers again story is a push and pull you'll enjoy. This book had everything I would want in a book: action, adventure, hilarious laughs, heartbreaking moments, twist and turns, sexy and sweet romance. Loved seeing side characters like Trent that we met in the Curl Up And Dye Mysteries Series pop up and tie into this world more. New characters like Iris, Ezra, Dev, Percy, Carmen and Quinton flow well with this plot and enhance this Universe in the best way. I want to see more and more of them! Can't wait for the next.

Lucien and Ryder have a history, a hot as hell history. Full of stolen artifacts, lies, broken hearts, and more lies. Lucien can’t let Ryder go because he gave him a piece of his heart. Ryder desperately needs to let Lucien go because he lost a piece of his heart too, and he wants it back damnit. Intrigue, lust, and rediscovery await.It seems as if I’ve read a lot of what I’d call cute books lately. This one falls completely into that category. This authors Curl Up And Dye, Blissville, and Rogues books contain so many rich and varied characters. Lucien and Ryder may out-shine and out-snark Josh and Gabe. Oh so many new faces and personalities to absorb. So many wonderful possibilities in their futures. This one was just fun to read.

I loved Wicked Games so much. At first I thought there was going to be a lot of back and forth between Ryder and Lucien before they “made up” but that wasn’t really the case here. After reuniting for the first time there is an explosive scene between the two men (super hotttt). I loved all the references to Romancing the Stone and they play off of Carmen Sandiego.These two men go on their own adventure to achieve their own happy ending. Aimee Nicole Walker is an amazing storyteller!

I love all the books in the Curl up and Dye and Road to Blissville series so I wasn't surprised that I also love this one.The lovers to enemies to lovers theme and the sizzling chemistry between Ryder and Lucien are perfect and we are treated with a great mix of mystery, angst, and side characters that you can't help to love. And I wasn't the biggest fan of Ryder in the last book but that definitely changed.

I devour all of this author's books the second they are released. I never think I can love one more than the last but this one is my fave by far. Ryder was hurt in the past by Lucien so it makes sense he is leery to trust again, but Lucky is patient in earning that trust back. It's a story full of adventure and the supporting cast brings as much enjoyment to the story as any I've ever read. Oh Percy.

This was one of the best stories from Aimee Nicole Walker. I have loved most of her characters, but Lucky and Ryder are the best. Their story combines enough romance and intrigue to make it difficult to put down, which is why I'm finishing it at almost 2:00 am on a work night. You won't be disappointed with this one!

Aimee Nicole Walker is one of my autobuy authors and she did not disappoint me with this book!! OMG I absolutely loved Lucien! He and Ryder are so much fun and I loved their banter! And I need more Percy and Deverish!!

Well Aimee did it again. She heated up the pages of my Kindle app. She's...it wasn't just hot it was smoking hot. I loved the mysteriousness of this book. The adventure.. highly recommend it.

L. Randall Wray is a professor of Economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, USA, and Senior Scholar at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College, New York, USA. A student of Hyman P. Minsky while at Washington University in St. Louis, Wray has focused on monetary theory and policy, macroeconomics, financial instability, and employment policy. He has published widely in journals and is the author of Why Minsky Matters (2015), Understanding Modern Money: The Key to Full Employment and Price Stability (1998) and Money and Credit in Capitalist Economies (1990). He is the editor of Credit and State Theories of Money (2004) and the co-editor of Contemporary Post Keynesian Analysis (2005), Money, Financial Instability and Stabilization Policy (2006), and Keynes for the Twenty-First Century: The Continuing Relevance of The General Theory (2008). This is a good book for students and others who want to understand how money is actually created and managed in today’s world. The many elementary examples and answers to frequently asked questions lift the veil of obfuscation spread by mainstream economic and political discourse, especially concerning the roles of taxes, the Fed, and full employment. However the result is a bit repetitious, and the economic jargon, though explained, takes some getting used to. The powerful conclusion is that we have far better and more equitable ways to manage economies, such as the US economy, ways that have been blocked by ideologically generated misconceptions about money.The main message is that “taxes drive money”. That is, a government’s imposition of taxes and fees is what obliges its residents to work for the currency issued by the government to pay those taxes and fees. This spending (on goods and services produced from resident work) by the government thus comes before taxes, not after, so that the conventional story is incorrect (that a government must collect taxes before it can spend). And if a government, like the US, floats it foreign exchange rates, it always creates money “out of thin air” by crediting certain bank reserve accounts. The actual constraints on money come from the government’s budget and from the monetary goals, such as inflation and employment, set by the monetary authorities (the Fed and the Treasury in the US).Thus governments do not need any “backing” of their money supply by a commodity, such as gold or oil. However, what Wray does not emphasize is that a different kind of backing is needed instead. This is simply that a government must be effective and strong enough to (1) collect the taxes and fees it imposes and (2) to provide the kind of goods and services that its citizens expect. Governmental failure on either score may lead to widespread tax evasion or resistance, undermining the government’s ability to manage the economy and thus the currency too. This is a big problem for some developing countries, who often peg their currency to another currency, like the US dollar, to maintain its credibility. However Wray points out that this pegging often prevents full employment policies, enabling local elites to import luxuries instead.Concerning taxes, Wray emphasizes the model of sin taxes, viewing excessive income as a “sin” because the resulting economic inequality is so damaging to society. Strangely he does not extend this concept to large corporations, as their monopoly power is certainly a “sin”, both from the point of view of smaller businesses and from the resulting concentration of wealth and power. But his point is correct – that we don’t have to tax the rich to help the poor – advocating taxation and regulation to “predistribute” wealth rather “redistribute” it. Strangely he does not cite the most obvious form for predistribution: universal ownership, like the Alaska Permanent Fund (all residents get a share of the oil revenue). But Wray’s prescription is even better: full employment, achieved by government as the employer of last resort. Such programs have been highly effective, from the US in the 1930s to Argentina more recently. These programs not only obviate the need for most forms of “welfare” but provide “automatic stabilizers” during business cycles. Of course, strong opposition comes from businesses, who want the cheap labor that comes from a “reserve army of the unemployed”, but some are realizing that the political upheaval eventually generated by economic inequality is even more of a threat.

In my opinion it is important for people to understand how money, credit, and debt really work. Common "common sense" understanding about such things as national debt actually harm our economy. This book is not a quick read, especially if the reader takes the time to let the ideas, the facts presented seep into consciousness. However, Randall Wray is a recognized authority on the concept of modern money, and he does a good job of explaining how it works in a modern economy. It's not what people assume, and until we get this right we will continue to economically struggle as a country. Blue Pill or Red Pill ?

I came across MMT for the first time about a week ago when I saw and viewed a video by Stephanie Kelton. I thought to myself "This can't be right!" so I went off googling and read the wikipedia entry on MMT. After that, I had a bunch of questions. Searching on Amazon for MMT books I came across this one and looked at the table of contents. There is a chapter here on every question I had! I bought it and it arrived two days ago. I could not put it down, finishing it this morning. Along the way I did my own hypothesis development and testing (i.e., does the probability of a recession correlate to periods of government balanced budgets or surpluses - it does!) which quickly demonstrated to me the validity of the basic concepts. This is simply a must read book. I have no background in economics or macroeconomics, yet the book is easy to read. I finally understand how banking and the Fed work. I do wish a few of the terms were explained upon first use, but none of them are conceptually difficult and all are easily defined by googling them. Buy it or borrow it, but certainly read it before we get deep into the primary and national election season. This is what an informed voter needs to know. I'm tempted to buy 537 copies of this and send them to members of congress, the VP , and the POTUS.

This book is clear in its argument, easy to read for a non-financial person. Being way more sociological in my way of thinking I do wish it had more examples, and concrete process description, but as an introduction it works perfect.At first the argument is strange as most of think about money only as a mean of exchange. Yet, the arguments are clear and strong. It really gets you to think, and interpret the world in a new way.

This is the basic primer on Modern Monetary Theory. Clearly written in a conversational style. Has only one serious typo in the rendering of some mathematical equations. If you also have the first edition (this is the second edition, considerably revised) you will get the equations free of typos.

Excellent intro to MMT, definitely makes you think about a lot of concepts regarding governments and money that you have believed you entire life but that may well be completely incorrect. If MMT is right and if you believe that the purpose of government is to promote the health and welfare of its citizens then we are basically doing everything wrong.

This primer on how money works is a welcome tonic against what most people seem to remember from Econ 101. Wray explains how sovereign governments must spend money before collecting taxes, that fears of government investment crowding out private investment are overblown, and he revives Keynes's prescription for robust countercyclical fiscal policy. In particular, a government like the US with a sovereign currency, if it invests in productive solutions to social problems, can spend substantial fractions of GDP and support full employment at living wages without igniting a ruinous level of inflation.
