We're coming up to the 100th anniversary of the explosion that rocked Halifax and the surrounding communities on December 6, 1917 and author John Bacon has done a marvelous job in relating the events that led up to the tragedy along with the suffering that took place, and people coming together to assist one another in times of urgent need. This is a story of people giving of themselves in whatever way they could and individuals contributing financially while doctors from many localities offered their services. The United States and Canada had an uneasy relationship due to America's desire to annex Canada but Boston, Massachusetts, came through big time to assist their neighbor to the north which created goodwill between the two countries. Even today the province of Nova Scotia provides Boston with a prime Christmas tree in a show of gratitude for their help 100 years ago.Author Bacon sums up the book with the legal ramifications that took place as to which ship was to blame for the collision in the harbor at Halifax. This is a story of severe heartache with the towns of Halifax, Dartmouth, and Richmond being especially hard hit by the explosion. However, it is also the story of the compassion people showed to one another, and the rebuilding of the area into stronger communities with better materials.There are other books written on this subject which are well done, also. I can only say that this one is first rate with sixteen pages of photographs.

This is an important book about an historical event that few people know about outside of Canada, at least I learned about it only because I visited Nova Scotia on a cruise and was told about it during a visit to Halifax. I was therefore primed when this book was published on the anniversary (100 years) of the event. The largest man-made explosion before the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan in 1945. Thoroughly researched ,this book covers this event from every possible angle and makes for fascinating reading. Not a happy book, however, and recommended only to readers who have an interest in this sort of history. All the gruesome details are fully covered,as well as acts of heroism and faith. More than 3000 died, many more injured in a split second and half of the city was leveled.

I heard about this book last week on Al Kresta's radio show, as Al interviewed John U Bacon, and the book sounded so fascinating, I just had to read it. I had read another account of the Halifax Explosion years ago, but this book out a human outlook on this tragedy. This time the story was told from the perspective of several people who lived through it. Mr. Bacon brought this story to life, and what an amazing job he did! I highly recommend this book to all with Nova Scotia roots, as well as to history buffs. It is an amazing read!

I first heard of John U Bacon through his commentaries on NPR. Something about his storytelling grabbed at me and I didn't want it to let go of me. When The Great Halifax Explosion came out, I thought I'd give it a read. I soon discovered John's writting is as captivating as are his commentaries.This book ranks right up there with the best of them. The vivid details of the events leading up to, durring and following this catastrophic event have been painstakingly researched and woven together in a tapistry of calamity, death, grime, sacrifice, forgiveness and hope. I would put John's work up against any of the great historical nonfiction authors. For me, the most amazing section is the detail laid out in the split second of obliteration. It will forever be etched in my minds eye. The second most amazing is that I had no previous knowledge of this event.Well done John U Bacon!

I've read other Bacon books, but this one is different. Instead of being all about about UM, it's about an incident that occurred during World War II...but if you miss hearing about Michigan, keep an eye out - the University makes it in the book somehow anyway! ;DThe storytelling is incredible engaging, the scientific detail of the explosion is just enough, the balancing of different characters and storylines is perfect, and the switch from the buildup and explosion to the response, including the kindness of strangers near and far, leaves you feeling good about humanity. I didn't want to put this down, and didn't want it to end either!I also had the opportunity to hear John speak shortly after the book came out, and if you ever get the chance to go to a book signing, do it! He's just as good a storyteller in person, and just a nice guy all around.Go Blue!

Before reading this book, I knew John Bacon only as an excellent sportswriter covering the University of Michigan. This book proves he’s an excellent writer, period. He compellingly traces the history of one of the most tragic incidents of WW I, which he convincingly argues cemented a close relationship between the US and Canada (a relationship that had been somewhat frosty beforehand). I found the first third of the book an interesting read about life during WW I, but when the book gets to a point where about a dozen things go wrong in succession, leading to the devastating blast, it’s mesmerizing. Well done.

In fact, the beginning and the end increasingly look almost identical. It is a wonder that the author still mostly skips the guesses on the biggest question "why all the fuss" after unconsciously highlighting the futility of it all throughout!

This is an outstanding quick reference. This purchase is actually my second copy; I leave one at the office and found it useful enough that I bought a second copy for some analysis work I was doing at home. That's not to say I couldn't find everything online readily, I just like the lay out and format.Be aware by itself this is not a good intro book for SQL. But it's a great reference to keep with you while you're learning (at least I found it so as somebody who is not a DBA, but works with databases on a near-daily basis). SQL Pocket Guide: A Guide to SQL UsageNot a quick and easy reference. In the interest of covering a number of versions it covers none well or completely. Sorry I bought it. Not up to usual O'Reilly standards.

I'm not a SQL novice and teach a class at a college level however there are those rare commands that I don't use often and need a reference. This is literally in arms length at work for those exact times. In fact, so useful that this copy was purchased for home use.

For the past twenty years, I had been generating SQL queries using Access's query-by-example grid. Recently, I found myself needing to write the SQL directly, and this book lived up to its title. It's not an instruction manual. It's a short reference book, and an excellent one.

It's very handy, easy-to-use, and well-written. I have no complaints.

The difference is that today our technological leaps have made it all possible, and now, much more believable.Quoting the author from page 92- “I can only say that in the 1990’s the whole concept of a secret system of tunnels underlying the landscape seemed incredible to me. I considered myself an informed person and presumed that if such things existed I would certainly know about the whole affair. But then I had no knowledge at the time of the stupendous sums of money available in the black budget. I had a very rudimentary knowledge of how special access, compartmentalized programs and projects work. I did not know how powerful and sophisticated underground excavation technology was. And, I did not fully appreciate how massively corrupt and deeply criminal the American system had become. Now I better understand what is possible. I have a much better grasp of the advanced technology, the massive black budget funding, and the extreme human compartmentalization in the world of special access, clandestine programs. I comprehend now how profoundly compromised the entire system is, and how the charade presented to us in school, on television, at church, and by the government is an illusory mix of feel-good, mind numbing propaganda to keep us fat, happy, and blissfully dumb.”These are the things that President Eisenhower warned up about in his farewell address on January 17, 1961, warning us of the military- industrial complex. A short time later, President Kennedy also warned us in his Secret Society’s Speech made before the American Newspapers Publishers Association on April 27, 1961.This is a very good book to learn about what’s going on under our feet in the secret underground world, and I highly recommend it. I enjoyed reading about some of today’s cutting edge technology, and the ideas that go back decades and even centuries from the brilliant minds that created it. But I also consider this book a work in progress. Once you understand how ‘the game’ is played, it is extremely difficult getting incontrovertible proof of anything in the world of secret black budgets. Only future whistleblowers testimony and new documents released through the FOIA will ever make research like this incontestable. As of now, this dedicated researcher has done everything possible to enlighten us. And for that, I’m very grateful.To quote from Star Trek-Have the ability to expand your mind and your horizons. For that brief moment you will open yourself to options you would never have considered. That is the exploration that awaits you, charting the unknown possibilities of existence.

This book reads like a person trying to swallow several pieces of dry toast in one sitting. The substance is there, but it's a lot to digest and you're not sure exactly where the information given has come from. Numerous other books on various topics are cited as the source, but unless one obtains and reads all of these books, how can one know for sure the validity of this one? Lot's of interesting allegations of the whereabouts of certain US underground bases (terrestrial) but really no substantial evidence given (notwithstanding it is logical to assume there are underground facilities in Area 51 and the like without reading this book). Numerous other topics are briefly addressed such as: deep sea installations, high powered ulta-fast underground "rail" systems, flying saucers, alien abductions to underground bases, submarine tunnels, open ocean oil rigs that are really "covers" for these deep sea installations and so on. A lot to digest and much to ponder, but no real evidence of course because the subject matter, if real, is highly classified by our "government". Still, interesting and thought provoking (if you can get through the dry read) on numerous subjects that the average person can only speculate about; however, if true, could be a logical explanation of where the trillions of tax dollars are actually going. It would certainally take a huge sum of money and the army corp of engineers and several decades to build these facilities.

This is not Sauder's first book, but it is the first and only one that I have read. I was surprised at how much information about the existence of underground bases is in the public realm - it's just that it is seldom pursued, and people simply do not connect the dots. Just the listing of all the admitted underground bases is stunning. Loud blasting under Dick Cheney's house in 2002, continuing for MONTHS? Neighbors complain, and the work is described by official sources as"infrastructure and utility upgrades! Just the listing of known but secret underground bases is enough to make you realize the magnitude of what we don't know. This is yet another aspect of how the USG does what it pleases with our money and then gives the American citizen the "mushroom treatment". If you understand the concept of Richard Dolan's "Breakaway Civilization", this book will help you understand that it probably exists largely underground.

if you want to know where all our tax money has gone for the past 50 years and why everything on the surface is falling apart well this book will show you why. that feeling of vertigo it will give you is you finally knowing whats going on is much more profound than you ever though possible. why dont our leaders maintain America because they have made a new one under your feet so they don't need us surface people anymore. a fantastic read with great sourcing and real journalistic rigor which is sorely lacking in our current times.

I was quite surprised when I received this book. If you're wanting a book loaded full of stickers that are reusable and repositionable, you want this. It has a variety of horse types such as Western, race horse, English etc. I know a little girl who is going to absolutely love these!

I make a scrapbook every year for my niece's birthday. She is in love with horses and has been since she was born. It is very difficult to find different horse stuff every year for her book. I saw this and I thought for the price - it was worth a try. I received it on time and packaged well. I am very happy with this purchase. We hope this book can get her through her horse stage!!! The horses are all different colors and sizes. There are trophies and ribbons and horse shoes and carrots. The stickers are very realistic and come in large and small sizes. I think it will be easy to coordinate the stickers in the scrapbook as there are different colors to each one also. The stickers are removable so I will have to glue them. But for the price and the diversity of the stickers - I am fine with gluing. I am very happy with this purchase!

My daughter is in a phase of LOVING all things horses. She is going to be getting this sticker book along with several other horse related items. I took a peek in the book and am really impressed with both the variety of stickers and the quality. I'm not sure that they'll be reusable as I haven't tried that yet, but so far, so good!

My 2 year old loves this book. She doesn't understand that if she puts them on the pages provided she can reuse them. I think this would great for travel.

I purchased for my 5 year old niece and she loves these stickers. They are more for younger children, like ages 4-6, not quite fancy enough for horse loving children in older age groups. Very good value for the money.

Stickers are beautiful but on such a thin paper that they tear when you take them off the page. They aren't reusable as they curl up and don't want to stick again. Very difficult to peel of the page and reposition.

love these attractive reusable stickers. trouble is, I wanted them to stick on my wall. they fall off quickly. they might work good in a stamp/sticker book.
