I have a daughter who struggles with her weight. It's been a sore subject in our home for a while now, and the cause of many tears (mine and hers). I was hoping Jill Zimmerman Rutledge would be able to impart some wisdom and shed a little light on our dilemma.Rutledge does just that, addressing weight, fashion, and perfectionism. Written for a teen audience, each chapter shares the stories of three girls and how they're coping with that particular issue. Each girl created a special statement for themselves (such as my personal favorite, "Everyone gets a prize", which means every one has one truly great thing about her no matter what she may think), and developed a plan of action to get to her goal. Rutledge is careful not to push dieting, but a healthy lifestyle filled with good foods and exercise. She tackles different body types and unrealistic expectations. I was impressed with the straight-forward, practical approach that is both honest and encouraging.

Jill Zimmerman Rutledge is as skillful with the world of teen girls as a composer is with sounds. She cares about every feeling, every heart ache, every joy, every concern of girls' lives. The coping strategies she suggests are geared to every personality type of teen girl. Reading the book feels as if Jill, the writer is a wise teen girl who is reaching out to other teen girls out there with compassion. I recommend this book for every teenager, grandparent/parent, the faculty/administrators of girls schools and just about anybody who deals with girls.

This book is very useful. It speaks directly to teens and offers several ways to deal with negative thoughts about body image, eating, and other issues. The sections on positive perfectionism and negative perfectionism are helpful for teens and adults alike, offering specifics about how perfectionism can be a positive force in any person's life. As with the author's last book, I have bought copies for each of my teenaged nieces and our baysitters. I recommend it to any teen girl and her parents.

My main complaint with this book, is the author doesn't use enough ERD/UML diagram, to give readers a visual representation of the databases/schema they are working with, as well as the cardinality (e.g. many to many relationship). He goes into a 'little' detail about the basics of ERD diagrams, but doesn't mention anything about associative entites and representing multivalue attribute (most of the time implemented as a weak entity). In a scenario where you're working with 10 or more different tables in the same schema, and having no visual representation, this is very demoralizing for a self-learner.When the author talks about DELETE statement. He states in Chapter 7: "MySQL returns an error message if you attempt to delete a row from the Vendors table that has related rows in the Invoices table. Usually that’s what we want."I was scratching my head a couple times when he mentioned this. Then I remembered I had to 'CASCADE CONSTRAINTS' when deleting certain tables from Oracle SQL. Notice the author doesn't mention 'foreign key constraint' in that quoted sentence, which would have been 10 times more understandable, since one could just a do a google search on that term, instead of waiting until the book's 11th chapter where he goes into detail about foreign keys.The book doesn't go into proper detail as to how to set up MySQL Workbench. Thanks to asking on internet forums, I found out I needed a secondary app, such as XAMPP, to get Workbench up and running.The book did go a long way to get me ready in Oracle SQL, at an introductory, despite MySQL using slightly different syntax in some areas here and there. Also the book doesn't talk about how to create tables and primary/foreign key constraint until the 11th chapter. But doing these things is far easier than performing search queries; so I wouldn't call it a negative, but my introductory database class at a 4-year college did go into that first hand. The exercise questions at the end of each chapter are indeed helpful and do help one further their understanding of the SQL in general, although some questions are worded confusingly. The author provides the full query answer on his website.At the 'used like new' price I bought this book for, I'd say its definitely worth it.

Couldn't create database.Downloaded msq2_allfiles from the murach website, in "db_setup" folder, there are 2 "create_database" files, one for "MySQL 5.7 and later". Neither works.Tried both in MySQL workbench.1. Since I just downloaded MySQL Community Server 8.0.11, I think I should go with "create_database-MySQL 5.7 and later", opened and executed, tried "SELECT * FROM terms;", got error message"Error code: 1146. Table 'om.terms' doesn't exist"2. Then I opened and executed "create_database", got error message "Error code: 1064. You have an error in your SQL syntax". Strange thing is, I can successfully execute "SELECT * FROM terms;"It's not very friendly to new users like me, I am feeling very frustrated.

I really like the two page format of each topic. For an experienced programmer this is a great way to quickly come up to speed on a diverse topic. Read it all of the way through or use it as a reference this is an invaluable tool for the professional.The two page format puts the description of the topic on the left page with example code on the left combine that with a great index and you have a tool you can draw from when you need to figure out some of the esoteric functions that someone else has used or need to figure the proper join to use. The pages are organized into section if you want to do some quick reading about the whole topic. I have purchased other Murach's books that are published in the same format and I have yet to be disappointed.

This is a required text for an Intro to Databases class that I am taking this semester. The book does a decent job of providing examples of each type of SQL statement or clause that you would need to know about. Where it falls short is when it comes to providing examples of full statements linking several clauses together. It is hard for a beginner to know where in each statement to place a particular clause without a good example. I asked my professor about this book and he said that he is aware that it is lacking in some respects but that it is still one of the better textbooks for this type of class.

This book was used as the textbook in my Database Concepts class at the community college level, and ... I am so thankful that it was! This book provided excellent explanations and examples of database syntax, queries, subqueries, design, etc. It spent sufficient time breaking down difficult topics into the basic elements and then built off of those concepts to bring everything together. The book was reasonably priced too! I aced the class and decided to take more database classes because of this book. I even bought Joel Murach's Java Programming book because his MySQL book was written so well.

Excellent book! Very easy to understand for beginners. The author explains things really well, goes step by step with plenty of examples. Definitely recommend!

Easy to read, even for someone with no prior SQL experience. The terms and procedures seem to follow a logical order. I like training that doesn't jump around from subject to subject. If the topic goes astray it is explained in detail. Do yourself a favor and follow the appendix instructions to install all necessary (free) software. The book is accurate and I had no problem duplicating these very complex queries as illustrated in the book. I've read many technical training books and this is among the easiest to follow. The results are impressive.

Both Eli and Kristen have interesting, complex families and backstories. I loved her devotion to Etta and his to Anna. Anna's storyline with both profound autism and a chromosomal disorder and the severity of her conditions with a residential facility a real possibility is not often found in YA literature and was realistically portrayed, except the availability of centers and no mention of funds to pay for such a costly facility. I appreciated how Blount dealt with the more severe side of the spectrum with no easy answers. Eli's devotion to Anna was incredibly sweet.Plotwise, THE WAY IT HURTS started slow with band and music details setting up the important second half of the story. I couldn't put the book down during the last 50%.THEMES:-Miscommunication on and offline filled the story, with both characters often making assumptions without checking for the source.-Internet bullies and trolling-Danger of giving location online-The importance of family-Special needs siblings-MisogynyTHE WAY IT HURTS has broad appeal to male and female audiences including reluctant readers. She delivers social commentary subtly without beating readers over the head with her important points.

Wow! I loved this book!! As always Patty writes with such amazing detail. I felt like I was right there with Kristen and Elijah, felt what they were going through. Congrats to Patty for writing yet another very now and relevant book. You should definitely read this book!

Elijah wants his band to succeed, and is willing to do anything to get them the recognition that he feels they deserve, even if it means playing tamed down music at the county fair for exposure. Kristen has her summer figured out, but when she is rejected from the Arts program she auditioned for she is crushed, but goes to perform in her school's performance because the show must go on. When Elijah sees Kristen perform, he knows that she is just what his band needs to step up their game. The hard part will be to convince his band-mates and Kristen the same... And to keep his feelings out of the mix.I have been so lucky in the books that I have tackled recently because they have all been really enjoyable reads, making me so sad to put one down for fear the next can't live up to the high expectations I currently have. Well, this book was love for me. I had anticipated to like the story, pretty much due to the music aspect and the push-pull relationship hinted at in the synopsis, but I was caught off guard by the love I felt while reading this story. I was swept up by everything that was this book: the banter, the emotional turmoil the characters deal with, the family bonds, the angst, the pull of romantic love, the disappointment of failure, the humor of the battle of the sexes, the high of performing, the hurt others can cause, and the twitter battle and reality of harmful social media. I felt so many emotions while reading, and was on the verge of tears a few times without even being aware they were coming until my chest was tight with emotion. You want feels? Then you have come to the right place. The best part of the story was how Patty mixed the flair and flamboyant Broadway style with the dark gritty world of Heavy Metal. As a side note, I don't think the cover did the book justice, don't get me wrong it's an ok cover, but I feel like the story was so much more than what the cover seems.​This story was about family, relationships in general and the big factor that ties them all together- Music.​The things that stood out to me the most was Elijah's relationship with his special needs sister Anna and Kristen's grandmother Etta. Elijah loves his sister, regardless of how difficult she can be and he is willing to bend over backward to make her happy, which is uncommon for a teen, who are usually so focused on themselves at that age. You find out pretty late in the story that she is part of the autism spectrum, but the signs were around. I liked that Elijah never saw her as a burden, but instead he could see her intelligence and potential, and would do whatever he could to let her be herself. The fact he sings to her to calm her and has fully clothed, totally not inappropriate (regardless of what his mom says!) bath time with her was heart warming. Etta was such an influential person to Kristen, she inspired her to follow in her footsteps, her quotes help Kristen make life choices and she was the encouragement that Kristen needed to make her big choice- with out Etta, Kristen would never have been where she ended up.This was my first book by Patty and I enjoyed her writing, the pacing, and use of social media- mixing the text conversations with actual conversation to keep it relevant for the time. She created people I felt for, that I loved, that I rooted for, and I believed in. And the ending was just what I wanted, a nice wrap-up to the story that covered everything I wanted to know (I love having a book with no loose ends). This was an emotional roller-coaster for me, with some amazing highs and some low lows, but I would not change a single thing. This is perfect for someone who wants some feels and romance with their music. Rock on!I received this title in return for my honest review.

Kristen and Elijah share different segments of the same passion. He's into heavy metal and is frustrated because three years of work and playing in a band hasn't gotten him where he wants to be. She's frustrated because her hoped for summer program rejected her as 'not quite good enough' and she's worried her dreams of getting accepted at a place like Berklee School of Music will evaporate as well. It's by chance that they meet when Nick, the band's drummer, drags Elijah to a high school performance of Cats because his girlfriend has the lead. The moment Elijah sees Kristen and hears her voice when she sings because Nick's girlfriend has laryngitis, he's a goner, but were things so simple he could just walk up, introduce himself and ask her to join the band. There are plenty of barriers to both romance and success as the story progresses; things like her having been an online critic of the band and their music, Elijah's preoccupation with taking care of his sister, Kristen's fear of the slew of vicious and scary comments posted online after she does sing with the band and neither of them being willing or able to express how they really feel for the other person. Having worked with teens in a mental health setting and had experience as a public librarian working with teens, I can attest to the power of anonymous nastiness online. Some might thing this as overdone here, but I disagree. I read the book in a couple afternoons and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it to both school and public libraries as teens will see bits of themselves and their friends scattered through the story.

As a school librarian, health and wellness teacher, voracious reader, and grandmother, I often think about reviewing a book, but there are so many other things to do. I HAD to write about this one. The message is powerful and communicated in a humorous, undidactic manner, in large part thanks to the deeply appealing, funny and poignant illustrations. It would be hard to find someone who couldn't relate to Jim Panzee. I LOVE this book.

The art instantly drew me to this book. I’m a storyboard artist myself and really appreciate the simplistic yet expressive drawing. It’s adorable and a cute read. Excited to read this to my baby niece once she starts talking.

I know this book has really good reviews but we spend time telling our grandchildren they have the ability to change how they feel. The book suggests being a grouch is ok.

This is a great book for children and adults alike. Great message about feeling feelings, and being a good friend.

I wish I had had this book as a child. I think it's important for children to learn that it's fine to "have moods" or "be grumpy." It's OKAY for children--and girls especially--to not have to "please" all the time or always be "on." I am getting this book for all children under 10 that I know. 10 might be a too-advanced upper limit. Lovely illustrations. Thumbs up.

My two year old daughter LOVES to read along with this book, and mimics the grumpy faces in the mirror.

We've had this book for only a few days and I've already read it about 25 times... my almost 2 yo daughter loves it! This instantly trumped all of her other favorites. Its a cute story and message and the illustrations are great. I do enjoy reading it... just not so many times in a row!

I was thrilled to find this book so I can read it to my Grumpy Monkey. It is a great book for children.
