A great cruising guide. Some of the information is outdated but a lot of important details are still valid today. You should complement this book with recent information and/or local guides for the places you intend on visiting. For example. the islands of Vieques and Culebra, while still under US jurisdiction, are not being used as US Navy bases anymore and although there's still dangerous unexploded ordnance scattered around, they've not being used for target practice for quite a few years now.One great thing about this book is that it's designed to be used along with Imray-Iolaire nautical charts and you can plan your routes more accurately by using the most recent charts and the book as reference, just don't rely on it for accuracy regarding places to visit since a lot of things have changed over the years.

A bit old but still has good information. Don is a bit set in his ways and many of his recommendations show an excessive use of tactics one would expect to use on older non-motorized sailboats. As with all such books the cruiser should acquire books on same subject from multi source/ writer's. All have lots of opinions based on a persons personal views and experiences... none are totally true from any source as you will see if you are actually cruising.

Invaluable suggestions regarding navigational hazards to avoid.I purchased the book following a presentation that I attended by the author, Don Street at the 2013 Annapolis sailboat show. Mr. Street's account of his years sailing throughout the Caribbean was so captivating that the book became a have-to-have.The only negative regarding the book is that the information hasn't been updated since around 2000, so information about facilities may be a little stale.Great cruising guide. Get it! You wont be sorry.

this is a classic cruising guide, and it has good information. this guy Street is a legend, and you'll see him referenced by many seasoned cruisers.my error was not realizing that this book is o-l-d! Published "1974, 2001" - not sure what the "2001" refers to since i can find reference to the 1980's at best.anyway, these sort of things all have limitations. just know what you're buying.i have found Stephen Pavlidis' guide books to be very well researched and useful, if you also want a modern guide.

Don't go without this detailed review of every harbor you might want to visit. And get the Imray Iolaire chart that goes with this book. This combo is all you'll need!

The book took the fear out of us to visit these unspoiled waters.

Some interesting stuff but very dated. It's true, rocks don't move but this is still at a point where it either needs to be fully updated or not offered.

There were many local railroads linking towns and cities throughout the United States, most notably in Illinois, Ohio, and California. This became the vision of many entrepreneurs and politicians, most prominently Abraham Lincoln, who said in 1832: "...no other improvement...can equal in utility the rail road."In 1849, the discovery of gold in California gave new urgency to the building of a transcontinental railroad. The American Civil War interrupted their efforts; when the Civil War ended, political support for the railroad continued to be strong, even after Lincoln's assassination. It seemed like everyone of importance wanted to see the transcontinental railroad built."Nothing Like It in the World" is less a story about the politics behind the building of the transcontinental railroad as it is a tale about how the railroad was actually built, although the book's early chapters are devoted to telling the story of the men who founded the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads, and of their efforts to get support from the Federal government for their endeavors.The vast majority of this book tells the tale of the ordinary people - mostly immigrants, Mormons, ex-Confederate soldiers, and other laborers - who frequently sacrificed life and limb to build the railroad. These were the ones who surveyed routes, laid road beds, built bridges, excavated tunnels, set down ties and track, and drove spikes across the heartland of America.The Central Pacific Railroad began its journey eastward from Sacramento, California in 1865. At almost the same time, the Union Pacific began construction westward from Omaha, Nebraska. On May 10, 1869, the thirty year-old dream of a transcontinental railroad was finally realized at Promontory Summit, Utah. On that date, the final spike that joined the two tracks and connected the east and west coasts of the United States was driven.When I first read "Nothing Like It in the World," I thought it was an excellent book. Ambrose's descriptions of the construction process are superb; the best qualities of Ambrose's writing - his colorful descriptions of people and events and his easy to read narrative style - are always present.Unfortunately, these strengths are offset by the book's many flaws and controversies. Since its publication, "Nothing Like It in the World" has come under close scrutiny and fierce criticism for its allegedly slipshod research, factual errors, and "made-up quotes;" as a result, it has lost a great deal of credibility. Before his death, Ambrose apologized for his errors, and promised to correct them in future editions.I have decidedly mixed feelings about "Nothing Like It in the World." Although I thoroughly enjoyed it for its readability, its many flaws cause me to question its usefulness as a scholarly work of history. Readers should consider other, more detailed, better researched, and historically accurate books on this subject - most notably "Empire Express" by David Haward Bain - before turning to "Nothing Like It in the World."

If I recall correctly, when the book was first published, Ambrose came under some criticism for an alleged plagiarization of some of the passages in this book. For that reason, I refused to buy it for a long time. Although I already have several other books about the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, I did finally buy it just to see if Ambrose had anything new or additional to say about the RR. In fact he did. Some information that earlier authors had offered either incompletely or erroneously, Ambrose got right. If there was any plagiarizing, it is forgiven.It's a good read.

Five stars says I "loved" it, and that's largely true. Frankly, I'm a train-lover who's even visited the fabled Promontory site, and I did enjoy Ambrose's consistently engaging storytelling. This wasn't an easy project for any writer, but Ambrose skillfully tells the story of a railroad being built literally from both ends toward the middle, without the reader losing a sense of time and place.He describes more than building a railroad; he peels back the layers of social, corporate and political intrigue that shaped a project as big as the Trans-Continental Railroad. Which exposed some of our nation's often inspiring but also ugly history: the greed and manipulation, the no-holds-barred competition, the smoke-filled room deals and steals, and the ugly racism that used Chinese (and other) workers as near-disposable parts of a building machine and shamelessly pushed native peoples out of the way. That's part of our un-sanitized history as a nation, and it deserves to be exposed to the light of day.Still, it's a great read. I never got bored. And I still love trains.

This book reads much like a novel. There were wheeler-dealers and there were visionaries. Even Abraham Lincoln was involved! It made me realize just how big a deal a transcontinental railroad was, and the many ways it fast-forwarded the development of America. Also, I knew that my great-great grandfather, a Mormon convert from Sweden who moved his family to America to join Brigham Young in Utah, was killed in a landslide while working on “a railroad” in a place called Weber Canyon. Now I know that it was THAT railroad, and that Weber Canyon was a very important and difficult part of a very difficult endeavor.

This is a superb book by the consummate historian storyteller Stephen Ambrose. It is easy to forget now what a monumental task it was to build a railroad from the midwest to California during 1860's. It was almost like trying to put a man on the moon was a century later. The book is very easy to read, and will fill you with awe, particularly if you ever get a chance to ride the California Zephyr through the Sierra Nevada mountains, across the desert and over the hundreds of miles of mixed terrain that had to be crossed. The feat and the book are absolutely first rate.

Really well written, like all of Mr. Ambrose's books. I live in California and couldn't wait for the next time i went over The Pass on I-80 to see the sites of this remarkable history. When I went over the mountains the next time, I stopped in some of the locations mentioned in the book and was rewarded with great museums, memorials and historic markers of the events and milestones chronicled here. read this book if you want the whole story in one volume.

I bought this book not by accident. I am a moslem and I wanted to learn the real meaning of what is written in Quran. Real meaning of life, and the Ultimate Reality. So I bought this book and some others. And I found my answers in Sufi teaching. Now I am looking for a teacher. And I believe my heart will show me. The light in the self will show me.This book is very important. It ushers you (readers) into understanding Sufism.I live in Java, the land of spiritual, and I learnt mysticism in my family. I also read many books about Physics, theoretical physics and cosmology.I read about Hinduism; The Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and others. All of these is to understand the ultimate truth of Reality.Yet Sufism blew my mind away and reshaped what I have learnt to something more meaningful, and everything now felt so right, perfect, and doubtless.The Science of physics and the spiritual-the mystic are ONE. Literally.I see the nature and people in it differently. I have no fear nor doubt. Very calm. Very peaceful. Full of love. The Love of God.My brothers and sisters, let there be no hatred in this world. Only Peace and Love. Because we are One. One of God.La Illaha illallah. There is no God but God.

I am a reader, it has always been a hobby for me andI love the feel of a book in my hand and owning a copyof the book. I read to know that I am not alone and thiswas one book that taught me a whole lot...We are more alikethan different. The book gives a history of the Islam beliefand the Muslim true culture. It also tells us that weare looking for the same thing...Love...Love for God, Love forothers, and Love for self. Reading this book gave me hope formy belief...We Are One...One In God.

I bought this book after watching an interview of the author on Oprah since I had wanted to learn more about Sufism and Rumi for a long time. Although during the interview Llewellyn was very impressive, this book is not. I was reluctant to write an unfavorable review, so I went ahead and read the book the second time, did a lot of research on the internet and watched Llewellyn's almost an hour long video called "We Are All One: Full Interview with Llewellyn Vaugh-Lee" and his interview with Oprah on the internet before writing the review.According to the book's definition, "Sufi is a name given to a band of mystics who are lovers of God". The goal in Sufism or a Sufi is to become one with God by mediating and chanting (dhikr). Some of the concepts are similar to other spiritual teachings such as "Divinity of humans" (Holy Spirit or God living in every human like Unity teachings), "The real reason of unhappiness or feelings of unfulfillment is the result of separation from God" ("A Course in Miracles") ," Living in the world but not of it" (Bible) and "Living in the presence of God every moment" (Marianne Williamson's writings)After finishing it, I was terribly disappointed by the book which is terribly dry, abstract and repetitious. ( "The mind and the ego can never grasp an experience of total unity in which there is no distinction between observer and observed, but the heart's experience of His unity is reflected into our ordinary consciousness." )I learned more about Sufism from a three minute video of Jonathan Brown from Georgetown University, a video clip of a documentary about Sufism by PBS on the internet and Rumi's official website maintained by his descendants(Mevlana Rumi), than reading this book.(Mevlana Rumi's website also has a list of recommended books in English. If you click on each book's web link, it takes to Amazon.com, where you can buy the books.)However, my major disappointment about this book was the dedication of one third of the book, fifty pages, to Carl Jung and his dream work while briefly mentioning Rumi, two pages, the first person comes to mind in many circles talking about Sufism. (Since I did a lot of reading about Jung years ago, I did not buy this book to learn about Jung but Sufism) Not to mention, there was no coverage of Omar Khayyam or Al-Ghazali "whose influences extended beyond Muslim lands and Western philosophers and theologians" according to my internet research.In this age of separation, alienation and strife, we need more enlightened spiritual teachers like Llewelly and his message of universal love and unity. ("God is all there is, everything is God's expression of Himself and God is love."/ "Whatsoever you turn, there is the face of God") One can't help but admire his command of the English language when he talks, brilliance, level of spiritual enlightenment, and dedication of spreading the message of universal love (Sufism) to masses. I wish he would write the way he talks because if readers, who don't know much about the subject matter unlike him, don't understand the book, the message is not going to reach the target audience. (I highly recommend watching his an hour long video called "We Are All One" on the internet to really appreciate him.)

For years I had no true understanding of the term "heart" other than in the context of a blood pump and/or some elusive indescribable motion. Between "Sufism: The Transformation of the Heart" and "The Knowing Heart: A Sufi Path of Transformation" by Kabir Helminski, I now have a much more meaningful understanding of this profound word, "heart". I could not find such work within the frame work of Christianity, but these two books have satisfied my quest.

Lost interest

I got goose bumps repeatedly while reading this book. Love just pours from this book as you read it. You smile because you feel so good absorbing the words. I bought this book because I wanted to know more about Sufism. I'm so glad I did. This book stays on my night stand so I can refer to for inspiration on a regular basis. Thank you Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee for sharing such beautiful writing with all of us!

Nice book! I had to ignore the proper names (there are so many) and just focus on the great beliefs and values in this book. I did send it to a friend because I like it so much.

I saw this author on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday about a month ago. When Lewellen Vaughn-Lee shared that there are at least 99 words for God, but the Sufi's say "Beloved," my heart opened and I felt transformed. All the other words for God did not resonate with me...too remote or not meaningful, just words. "Beloved" was the key for me, I felt it in my heart and tears sprung to my eyes.The gentleness in this man made me want more. I immediately downloaded Sufism: The Transformation of the Heart on my Amazon Kindle. At the same time I ordered the paperback from Amazon as well. The book is well written, gentle in nature, and on my bedside table. I whole heartedly recommend it.
