I'm not a huge fan of Lord John. In fact, his increased participation in the latest novels, along with William the Whiner, has somewhat lessened my enjoyment of them. However, this book strikes just the right balance with him if all you're interested in is a new Outlander book to help you through the mid-novel drought.Because, in many ways, this is what we have here - another Outlander novel, and a good one at that. In feeling, it's very reminiscent of Voyager, during the period of which it takes place. Finishing it actually led me to pick up Voyager again, partly to reorient myself vis-a-vis the storyline, but also because it just felt like the same book.I'm not a reader of the John's series, so I can't tell you if you should buy this for him. But I can tell you that if you were looking for Outlander, when you've run out of Outlander, look no further. Here's a whole new novel for you. A bit short, yeah, but new, good, and very satisfying.

ABSOLUTLY AMAZING STORY!! I could barely put this book down. It is a Stand Alone in the LJG series but if you have read The Outlander series it will fill in a lot of gaps of the Storylines or characters that were left hanging. Plus I got my Jamie Fraser Fix. I Love the thought of Jamie Fraser and I hope there is someone out there in the real world like him!! I have No idea why it took me so long to read The Scottish Prisoner. I had read all the Outlander Books many years past and many times but this was my first LJG series book and I loved it. I didn't even miss Claire!! The story is about the life of LJG and the Life of Jamie Fraser after he was sent to Helwater and his day to day life with his son William/ Willie the very young Earl of Elsmere it was just endearing!! I Loved it. Its a Keeper for future re reads. I Highly Recommend The Scottish Prisoner for you reading Enjoyment!!

I did love it...was in a near panic attack after finishing the last Outlander book... and there wont be another for several years....so having a little more with this book and some of the novellas, was just what I needed to ease out and land lightly into a world without Outlander. I would give 4 3/4 stars if possible, but it won't let you. The reason for less than five...it's just not the same without Claire. Also the ending, I was expecting more, but it is very hard to end books I know! Gabaldon is always great though. Taking a little break from Lord John Grey and reading something else, but will pick it up again and read the rest of them, while eagerly awaiting Outlander Book 9!

FINAL DECISION: More Jamie than Lord John, this story is a type of buddy book with John and Jamie having to work together to solve a mystery involving a possible Jacobite group. I loved seeing Jamie for an extended period even though my heart hurt for him missing Claire.THE STORY: This book takes place in the time period covered by VOYAGER (and there are spoilers). Here Lord John Grey finds himself the recipient of a mysterious message written in the Scottish language. He reluctantly realizes that Jamie might be able to translate the message. (The two have had a serious falling out during an earlier Lord John story.) Jamie is suffering from the loss of Claire but watching over his illegitimate and unacknowledged son. But he is also approached with echoes from the past by Irish remnants of the Rising. These events send Jamie and John Grey on an adventure to discover the truth of what is happening.OPINION: This is my favorite of the Lord John series, but it feels closest to Outlander because of Jamie's presence. But the reason that I like this as a Lord John book is because Lord John is best when he is interacting with Jamie and not just thinking about him.This book definitely takes it shape from the Lord John Grey series. It is a mystery that John goes to investigate. Here, because Jamie is such a central character, we get more of the interaction between John and Jamie. Their relationship is strained but this book is part of their journey to becoming friends again -- and this time a more honest friendship.I really enjoyed the story which was political drama, a roadtrip adventure, historical download and a story of unrequited love all in one. I also enjoyed getting to see more of John's brother and sister in law (a couple I enjoyed in their own story).This book enhanced my Outlander understanding and also managed to be the best example of the Lord John books.WORTH MENTIONING: This novel is told by alternating Jamie's story and Lord John's story as the stories overlap. It takes place in the space of when Jamie and Claire are apart VOYAGER.CONNECTED BOOKS: THE SCOTTISH PRISONER is the third book in the Lord John Grey series. This series is a spinoff of the Outlander series. While it is not necessary to have read the other books in the Lord John Grey series to read this book, I believe it is necessary to read VOYAGER to appreciate this book.STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

I fell in love with Lord John when he was Warden in the prison at Ardsmuir. He demonstrated a keen sense of humour as well as intelligence at least equal to Jamie's. This book goes between the pages of Voyager and provides the reader with more of who Lord John is, and his deep, abiding love and friendship for Jamie. Certainly a must read!

Did not disappoint. I loved combining Lord John and Jamie and it filled in some of the time when he was at Hellwater. I admit I read this book first without reading the other Lord John novella's and works because it did contain Jamie too and I time I wanted to hear more about. It can stand alone without the others, but it may give away some spoilers for the prior works. Still, since I've read all eight Outlander books, I don't consider that a huge problem. I really like Lord John and his family which are heavily involved in the Outlander book 8. I also liked that this was more a normal size novel. Long enough for several good twists and turns, but not a marathon read.

I've read dozens of nutrition books, and Dr Joel Fuhrman has become far & away my most trusted source. Read ANY of his books! Superimmunity is still my favorite. This one is more focused on weight loss (including psychological aspects) and slightly less specifically about the diseases of affluence that kill most of us, but it is more of the same facts & same message to eat copious quantities of greens & other whole vegetables, ample berries, nuts, seeds, & legumes, little or no animal products (even lowering his limits in this newest book), moderate INTACT whole grains, no sweeteners (caloric nor artificial), little or no processed foods, and zero trans fats. It's not the macronutrients, but the micronutrients!In this latest book, I particularly liked his criticisms of other diets. He attacks the Atkins/Paleo crowd for too much animal protein and too few nuts, seeds, & beans--just what I felt about Good Calories Bad Calories and The Calorie Myth--although the latter acknowledges Fuhrman and follows his lead in pushing for large amounts of phytonutrient-rich non-starchy vegetables.In fact, Fuhrman covered every one of my concerns with Jonathan Bailor's popular new (low carb high meat) book The Calorie Myth (which is still well worth reading AFTER Fuhrman). Bailor really pushes soy protein powders but here Fuhrman explains some concerns about protein powders (although not mentioning the hexane used in extraction).It may take 20+ years for the heightened levels of IGF-1 in Paleo dieters to surface as detectable cancer, but watch out! Fuhrman agrees with the low-carb concepts, but instead of falling into the meat trap, he incorporates low-carbs into a much broader health scenario (with protein from greens & beans). He still prefers algal supplements to fish for EPA & DHA, and he advises wild fish because of contaminants like dioxin in farmed fish.This time, he goes into a bit more detail about carbohydrates, soy isolates, meat, and especially dairy raising the IGF-1 hormone, resulting in fat, cancer, atherosclerosis, hypertension, aging, and any monster you care to name. Even the Calorie Restriction Society turns out to have significantly higher IGF-1 than vegans.Fuhrman attacks the anti-wheat crowd (Grain Brain & Wheat Belly) for confusing flour with intact grains. He attacks the USDA for just about everything--too much meat, dairy, & grain, not enough vegetables, nuts, & beans. (Really, it's too much politics and corporate influence.) He attacks aspects of the Mediterranean diet (pasta & olive oil). He even politely indicts the China Study / vegan crowd for too little plant fat (avocado, coconut, olives, nuts, & seeds). He is right on target!Another topic now covered in a bit more detail is the danger of yo-yo dieting and how regained weight tends to be the more dangerous visceral fat (belly/organs) rather than subcutaneous fat.He reduces his acceptance of eggs on pg 146 stating, "a 23 percent increased death rate from those eating more than one egg a day", but I'm pretty sure the death rate is 100% (just like taxes), even for vegans. Besides, if you divide us into ovophiles & ovophobes, the egg-eating crowd surely also consumes more pepperoni pizza & ice cream, so such correlations, the backbone of much nutritional advice, should not be swallowed too gullibly.(Fortunately) There's nothing remarkably different from his other books, yet they're all worth reading. In this one he adds further information, clarification, case histories, and recipes, and it's at least as good as the others. Now he elevates the importance of raw onions & cooked mushrooms. He explains that onions must be chopped before cooking to break cell walls to release the alliinase enzyme for chemical conversions, just like the enzyme myrosinase in cruciferous vegies that converts glucosides to isothiocyanates. (My hypothesis, if you like your roasted garlic whole, [as with cruciferous] is to eat a little raw green onions with any cooked allium so that the alliinase enzyme is reintroduced.)Some reviewers complain that this book is just a repeat of prior books, and while it is mostly that, why not read this now instead of re-reading the older ones. Fuhrman is worth re-reading.Some reviewers object to the title because this is "yet another diet", although it is more of an informed lifestyle. Of course you don't count calories or watch the scale, but I also completely ignore the mentions of portion sizes, percentages, and schedules and just eat by the concepts (but do correlate your carbohydrate intake to the caloric demands anticipated after the meal). The title helps make this the perfect gift to several fad-diet yo-yo-weight friends for whom I hope it is The Last Diet. (But such a title might sound too fatal.)The appendix is a suitably cautious review of supplements, advising the possibility of a few like vitamins B12 & D but mostly warning of specific dangers, well in accord with advice in Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition and in The Vitamin D Solution. Iodine, zinc, and DHA are covered.Dr Fuhrman is a genuine healer, weaning people off of medications and into healthy lifestyles. He points out how detrimental our medical paradigm is, not only to our health but also to the nation's economy--with diabesity and its direct costs already unprecedented in human history and slated to rise to astronomical proportions if we don't quickly and radically change our paradigm from medical intervention to healthy eating. It's amazing that most doctors don't even know and won't hear of his simple plant-based healings.Searching for any criticism of his principles, all I can muster is that he could say more about spices (see Healing Spices by Aggarwal), doesn't mention circadian rhythms in relation to insulin & weight (see Lights Out, with reservations), and prefers "unnatural" (newly invented) algal extracts over my delicious salmon & herring as sources of EPA & DHA (in accord with The China Study crowd & lowering IGF-1). I can't recall if he has ever discussed oxylate concerns (e.g. in spinach & almonds) or the goitrogenic (iodine depleting) properties of cruciferous vegetables. He distinguishes starchy from non-starchy (you can eat them raw) vegetables in The End of Diabetes, but I don't recall reading it here, except in regards to potatoes. I'd also like him to discuss low-fructose versus high-fructose fruits, as incompletely mentioned in The Calorie Myth. I watched a video by Firas Zahabi on the Tristar gym Youtube page and he mentioned this book. I immediately bought the book and read it cover to cover. It will transform the way you think about nutrition. I started incorporating the principals of this book slowly and have reaped the benefits over the past year. I've lost 60 lbs and have gained significant muscle due to training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.What worked for me was adding a huge salad with a fruit based dressing everyday. After about a month, I started incorporating a home made bean based soup as a meal everyday. After about another month, I added a smoothie using dark leafy greens, fruit, variety of seeds etc. These 3 meals make up the base of my daily diet. And as stated before, I've lost significant weight, have great energy, built muscle, and sleep much better.A few tips:1) Prep your salad veggies all at once. I bought a vegetable chopper which decreases prep time a lot. Then I store the veggies in containers so that you can whip together salads in mere minutes.2) Make a huge pot of soup every Sunday. It's harder to cheat when you always have healthy options in the fridge!3) Most leafy greens freeze fine up to a month or more. Don't let your greens spoil!4) Get in touch with your body and now what true hunger feels like.5) I still drink black coffee and unsweetened tea, but not as much as I used to. I think the book says not to, but it's what worked for me, you may be different.Good luck on your journey!!

Deciding between Eat To Live or The End of Dieting:In this book, compared with his others, it's a lot easier to read, but it's a bit more "trust the doctor" versus laying out a massive scientific pile of evidence. So if you are a born skeptic, get Eat to Live. If you accept that veggies are good for you, then skip that and just get to "follow the good doctor's advice" of this book.I also felt Eat To Live is a harsher diet... it's very, very strict, and if followed to the letter, will result in faster weight loss and health benefits. It's just really, really hard. In The End of Dieting, he loosens up a bit, and it may take you 3-4 times longer to get the results, but will be easier going there.If you have a major medical issue and are facing heart surgery, for example, get Eat To Live and take the tough medicine.If you just have 20-30 pounds to lose or want to just eat healthier to avoid FUTURE health issues, then go easy on yourself and do The End of Dieting.About the content:If you read enough diet/nutrition books, you start to ask youself? What is common knowledge and what is new here? In general, folks, NEW IS BAD.For lasting health with few side effects, find the "common ground" of all diets that have worked in the past.For Fuhrman, his diet is based on common sense and what we all know in the back of our minds to be true. We need to eat less meat and cheese, and a lot more veggies (and fruit, just under some reasonable control).What this book does however, is give you the vast science behind it so you can justify the fact that, let's be honest, steamed asparagus is NEVER going to taste as good as a donut or peanut butter and jelly sandwich.So I absolutely believe that of all the diet books out there, all of them, this one is the healthiest. It's just not easy.

Nice book. this seems to be a very basic information and picture book. I had alot of stick on notes with questions in this book with no answers from it. So calling it originality guide is a wrong title for this book. Good for viewing pleasure for those who loved E bodies.

I was one of the unlucky few who recently , some 4 years ago suffered mega clots all over my body including a massive stroke due to the side effects and adverse reactions from drugs like vioxx and Celebrex. I told my attorney that she must read this before proceeding with a suit.

This was a fascinating, excellent book that rather confirms the obvious- pharmaceuticals is BIG BUISINESS-cut throat. And when the CEOs are buisiness men out to make the most money rather then idealists trying to make the world better through medicine then we all have to put up our guard to protect ourselves from "miracle cures." Furthermore, I believe these same ruthless practices will be unveiled regarding the link between autism and vaccines made with poisonous preservatives, just like the new miracle vaccine Guardasil from Merck is causing young girls to end up with seizures and debiliting side affects. Just do a search on blogs from those who have subjected their daughters to this drug, only to regret it ever since.

It tells the true story of how drug companies operate. Just like the auto corporations, it's the bottom line; not how many people their product kills.Drug company CEO's are bean counters or salesmen. They know nothing about pharmacology.

Althogh this book was written several years ago the issue is still relevant.

Poison Pills: The Untold Story of the Vioxx Drug ScandalI couldn't put this book down! Mr. Nesi thoroughly covers the story of the Vioxx drug scandal in a refreshingly honest way. I especially enjoyed the history of the pharmaceutical industry that he weaves into his story. I recommend this book to anyone in search of a great and informative read!

I enjoyed 'Poison Pills.'It is, first, well-written for a book of its kind, with a simple, straightforward narrative that doesn't get in the way of things. Second, the book is substantial in content, both overtly and between its lines. On the outset, 'Poison Pills' provides an excellent case study of the duplicity and dysfunction present in much of the modern-day pharmacological industry (along with its academic and political bedfellows). We see here, framed in the Vioxx debacle, a well-rounded portrait of the questionable infrastructure which forms the bedrock of modern Western medicine -- an infrastructure so riddled with bias, vested interest, and shortsightedness, it continues even when lives hang in the balance. The story of Vioxx is, really, one of the human condition -- or, at least, that condition which is prevalent today, as characterized by the desperate attempts to control and manipulate one's fellow man for various kinds of personal gain. Assumptions, illusions, smearing, the rigorous twisting of facts -- all the classical manipulative tricks are represented in the case of Vioxx and Merck, and we would do well to take note and learn from the lessons contained within. In this regard, we see the book's most important feature: not the questions that are answered, those that are raised. Namely, the Vioxx debacle forces us to question the basic, underlying legitimacy of many of our institutions, from social to governmental to political to commercial to personal, almost all of which would, when placed under the microscope, appear to be based largely on assumptions, self-interest, and other questionable foundations. Much to learn here, indeed.If I had one complaint about this book, it was that the author himself at times resorted to the same biases, assumptions, and narrow reasoning of which he accuses Merck and co (or so I read it). This self-contradiction, however, was minimal, and failed at devaluing the book's overall thrust.My thanks goes out to this book's author, subjects, and publisher.
