Superb autobiography. Sir David has had a remarkable career, and inspired all of his fans to appreciate the marvelous world we share with animals, insects and plants. Listening to it in his own voice brings it to life in a way that even the best book cannot.
Great book!
This is a book for Brits over sixty. If you remember watching "Zoo Quest" on TV as a kid, you will love this book. If you are younger or not British, most of it will mean nothing to you. I've always admired David Attenborough and hearing him reading his own book is a real pleasure. His stories about the early days of television are fascinating and some of the technical issues he discusses are illuminating, if you are (or were) that kind of nerd. I never realized that he almost got pulled away from making nature programs and was seduced by the dark side of the BBC - the administration. He was even considered for the job of Director General (the top dog at the BBC) but happily he quit the BBC and went back to making the "Life" series, which has been so successful. As I said at the beginning, if you remember "Zoo Quest", if you remember standing outside a TV shop watching Wimbledon in colour (not color) or you know who (or what) "Hullabaloo and Custard" were, you should buy the book or better still, the recording. You will LOVE it.
Every body knows how professional, intelligent and brilliant David Attenborough is when he does his job. But in disc 1 he reveals that even David Attenborough had times of struggling and had to make the biggest decisions of life when he was a youth. This is good to know that he wasn't perfect or genius right from the beginning, but his brilliance was the accumulation of experience and due to his constant, unremitting efforts. This gives me (and I imagine most listeners) a lot of courage and energy, as I'm at the point of making an important decision about my future myself.This was originally an semi-autobiographical book and is ready by Attenborough himself. But the unique thing about this product is that this autobiography is an audio format, so what kind of vision we see is completely up to our imaginations, which I like very much about.Obviously he present it very well as it's his career, but also this is highly educational and entertaining.The good thing about CD books is that you could listen to them at any time while you're doing something else, such as cooking or driving, and you can learn variety of things from someone else's experience. If you fit into one of these categories; (1) a David Attenborough fan, (2) animal lover, (3) a nature fanatic, (4) a BBC Radio 4 listener and/or (5) an audio book lover, I grantee you'll enjoy listening to these CDs. David Attenborough has played a key role in wildlife documentaries since their inception at the very beginning of television. Anybody who grew up watching any of his amazing shows still thinks that new wildlife documentaries, despite all of the advances in technology and filming techniques are unforgivably lacking in one major sense, they lack the passionate voice of David Attenborough. The reason he was so adored as a presenter and commentator was that he had and has a genuine passion for the topics and animals he's discussing. His passion in all of his televised work translates wonderfully into this autobiography.Attenborough has led a fascinating life and he does a fantastic job of telling his own story humbly and with a great sense of humour throughout. This is one of my favourite books and I assure you that it will be one of yours as well.
