There are lots of reviews below with details about the story line, so I will limit my comments to the pro's and con's.On the positive side, this is a somewhat entertaining book - typical of books of the genre in terms of action, military and espionage edutainment, etc. Also, it is a very current book, concerning terrorism and fighting the bad guys from the middle east. For those with a right-leaning political bent (which I am), the book is certainly right-wing oriented. Devotees of O'Reilly or Limbaugh (both of whom endorsed the book) will generally support the political bent of the book and find in the author a kindred spirit. Devotees of Michael Moore or moveon.org will not like it at all; in fact they will hate it. It is kind of a revenge fantasy for right-wingers who want to hit hard on the terrorists, the politically correct types in the US, etc.Now for the downsides. There are many, but I will limit myself to the big three. First, the main character, Mitch Rapp, is so profoundly unrealistic as to be outright silly. On the one hand, he is an assasin, torture specialist, and general covert ops "this never happened and you were never here" type of guy. On the other hand, he is famous for being a covert operative and assasin and beloved by many for it, and is recognized by name and face by both US citizens and the bad guys in the middle east. He is not only on a first name basis with the President; he yells at the President in meetings, demands that cabinet members be fired, threatens to kill US citizens to get them to drive away from an ops scene, orders US generals around, and everyone takes his orders and his yelling because, well, because he tortures and kills people. Or because the President trusts him. Or because he threatens them with physical harm. Or something like that. It's very, very weird. He lives in the secretive, "you never saw this" netherworld of assasination and torture, but it seems the only being that hasn't heard of him and knows exactly what he does for a living is my cat. Really strange.Second, every other character in the book is an undeveloped cardboard characature. The cabinet members, congressmen, senators, etc., are all mind-numbingly inane bureaucrats more concerned with procedure and process than US security. None of them serves any purpose in the book other than to give Mitch Rapp someone to be pissed off at. Not a single one is developed as a character or has a viewpoint of any interest to the reader. There's an incessant returning to a sort of sub-plot about a Justice Department offical who's a sexy, blond, hot babe, but aside from about 50 references to her being a tease and showing a little cleavage, the character is never developed, doesn't figure into the plot other than as someone who Rapp hates but yet is strangely attracted to him sexually, and serves no purpose in the story. Same same for ALL of the other characters - not integral to the story, dispensable (and some of them are killed by Rapp or otherwise off'ed), and entirely without personality, complexity, or interest. Frankly, it was good to see some of the characters killed off just to get them out of the book.Third, this book is a revenge fantasy, and frankly, there's something a little disturbing about it. Taking revenge against the terrorists can be enjoyed, as a reader, but the extent to which Rapp luxuriates in humiliating and pummeling well-meaning, but perhaps misdirected, officials in the US government, citizens, etc., is disturbing. The whole book is largely an adolescent fantasy about getting back at both the bad guys and the people who "don't get it" regarding the war on terror. There is not enough sophistication in the revenge to get it up to "sophomoric" level; we are talking high-school revenge fantasy here. Nothing more or less than grabbing a baseball bat and finally, over a course of 500 pages, hitting the 9th grade bully in the head with the bat. And as long as you have the baseball bat in hand, hitting some teachers, and some other students, and the guidance counselor, and the principal, just for fun.Sorry to be a downer. You could do a little worse for pointless summer reading, which is why I give it two stars. But it is a weak book with extremely flawed character development to the point of absurdity.
The fifth Vince Flynn novel to feature counter-terrorism agent Mitch Rapp, this work seemed to me to be rather intent on returning him to his original caricature, stripping him of any previous personality pleasantries while portraying him as a single-minded, terrorist torturing and general bad-guy killing badass. Indeed, even Rapp’s wife, widely present in previous works, is hardly even mentioned here. In this work, we see an often irritable, irascible and downright explosive personality, often verbally battling with anyone who would disagree with his plans or methods, especially the Washington elite, even including the President. In one memorable verbal sparring session in the Oval Office, Rapp borders on insubordination that would’ve probably lead to others being put behind bars:President Hayes: “This is the White House. I need levelheaded advisors, and I will tolerate nothing less.â€Rapp: “Levelheaded? OK, how about this for a levelheaded assessment? The next time a group of Islamic radical fundamentalists try to blow up Washington D.C., you should place a little less emphasis on what your chief of staff tells you since she doesn’t have the slightest idea what she’s talking about when it comes to terrorism.â€President Hayes: “You are on thin ice, Mister. I’m getting sick and tired of you walking around here like you’re the only person who cares…the only person who’s contributed.â€Rapp’s anger reached a steady boil. Barely able to conceal his fury he kept his eyes locked on the President and said, “The next time you compare contributions I’ve made in the fight against terrorism to that of your political appointees, you won’t have to worry about firing me.â€Hayes pointed his finger at Rapp. “You need to start respecting other people’s opinions, and realize you’re not the only one with the answers.â€Rapp: “Mr. President, you sit here in this vacuum with all of these sycophants and so-called experts running around advising you, but have you stopped to realize that you came within a whisker of being incinerated by a nuclear bomb?â€â€œOf course I have.â€â€œMr. President, there are a lot of things that I don’t tell you about. Stuff that you’re better off not knowing, but maybe now’s a good time to give you a glimpse into what it takes to win this war. Do you have any idea how we found out that the nuclear material was on the ship headed for Charleston?â€Hayes shook his head.“We pulled five prisoners out of that village in Pakistan, sir, and none of them were willing to talk. I lined them all up, and started with a man named Ali Saed al-Houri. I put a gun to his head, and when he refused to answer my questions, I blew his brains out, Mr. President. I executed the bastard, and I didn’t feel an ounce of shame or guilt. I thought of the innocent men and women who were forced to jump out of the burning World Trade Center, and I pulled the trigger. I moved on to the next terrorist and blew his brains out too, and then the third guy in line started singing like a bird. That’s how we found out about the bomb, sir. That’s what it takes to win this war on terror. So don’t lecture me about commitment because I doubt anyone else on your national security staff would have pulled that trigger, and don’t ever forget that if I hadn’t, we wouldn’t even have the luxury of this argument. That is for certain.Indeed, a much more volatile Mitch Rapp presented here, for certain…The story, in essence, involves the discovery of a very sophisticated Al-Qaeda plot to smuggle a nuclear weapon into Washington D.C. to detonate it, killing untold hundreds of thousands. But as this plot becomes more and more exposed to the upper echelons of the U.S. government, the politicians, of course, become overly pre-occupied with the maneuvering of their political gains as their main “advice†to the President. This, in turn, sparks extreme malevolence in Rapp and his team “on the ground†attempting to locate this device and its protagonist. Through typical Rapp measures, i.e. ignoring Washington orders, he’s able to root out the culprit and seemingly save the day. Or does he? Flynn, again, is on top of his game here with magnificent twists and turns, combining explosive action with unbelievably deep access to C.I.A. and FBI techniques and operations that give all his books a remarkably stark reality. There was really no-one who could challenge Vince for the technical insight that he provided in his works and that definitely included Tom Clancy. And not to spoil the ending but it will have you literally ripping through the pages to get to the final outcome…again, a marvelous effort in the Flynn catalogue. An interesting point that I’m just now learning as I’m reading through this Flynn catalogue, something perhaps the long-time fans have known for some time is that the first published Rapp novel, “Transfer Of Power†in 1999 was actually the THIRD in the Mitch Rapp series. It turns out that “American Assassin,†(2010) the eleventh published Rapp novel, is really the FIRST in the series and the follow-up, “Kill Shot†(2012) is the SECOND. These two books, interestingly, were written right around the time that he’d announced his prostate cancer diagnosis and I wonder (and this is COMPLETE speculation on my part, with no basis in any facts or research) if he decided, from a mortality standpoint, to get the complete Mitch Rapp storyline out before proceeding on with the series…an interesting conjecture that, again, there may already be an answer to. As for me and my type A personality, I won’t be able to stand it if I don’t stop now and retreat to “Assassin†and “Kill Shot†before I continue with the rest of the catalogue. As for this work, Flynn has provided another marvelous read that only supplements the existing Mitch Rapp storyline and is an additional volume to the series that I would highly recommend.
