I am writing this review primarily to warn others NOT to buy the Kindle edition, but to get the print copy instead. The Kindle version omits the margin citations, which attribute quoted passages to their sources. To me, these attributions are essential to the text. It was not until I saw a print copy from the library that I realized what had been missing in the electronic version. When I went back and re-read the passages with attribution, I had an entirely different experience of reading the book.So unless the publisher revises the Kindle edition to include these references, do NOT buy on Kindle. Get the print copy instead.An engaging and brave work that deserves to be read in its original, nuanced format.

I loved this book. I won't say anything so daft as "I feel like I know Maggie Nelson..." but I will say that I feel like I know exactly what she wants me to know about her. The list of mentions concerning her honesty and her biographical style is long and I certainly don't have a qualm with that opinion; however, what struck me most was her intimacy. Not simply the intimacy of the shared details, but the intimacy of the style of the "log" so-to-speak. The book is written as a log of a slice of her life and though the details are the vehicle, the fragmentary thoughts - time, location, train-of-thought, &c. - are the real message and they include the reader in a way that feels very intimate while also being pensive enough to remind that reader that it is a labor rather than an extended share-sessionImpressive work - I hope many other men are taking it up

Every line in this book feels worthy of deep meditation. It reads like a wonderful cross between a memoir, a novel, and poetry. I read it in one all-consuming sitting.I've read lots of queer literature, queer philosophy, and queer theory in the past decade, but this book made me feel more introspective, thoughtful, and curious about gender, femininity, motherhood, and sex than ever before. Nelson's references to feminist and queer theorists make you feel like you're "in" on something if you've read them, or serve as a great contextualizing introduction if you haven't.I'm absolutely in love with this book. It may be because it was so easy for me to see myself in her writing, but it may also be because she says so many true things that I haven't been able to voice, even to myself.

okay wow, what did i just read?! the argonauts = an astounding meditation on gender, and sex, and motherhood, and family, and longing, and the limits of language...on the possibilities of love.maggie nelson has produced a robust, incredibly smart work of "autotheory." i don't think i've read anything like it before. i still feel dazed by the power of her prose, by her ability to synthesize information, observation, emotion. i've been pushed and discomforted and expanded as a reader.what would it mean to live in a world beyond binaries? what would it mean to live from a place of uncompromising freedom? provocative, bold, honest. highly recommended. five big stars.

this is one of the smartest books i've ever read. hybrid nonfiction memoir-ish and critical theory and has tons of intelligent things to say about queerness, relationships, and womanhood.

Beautifully written. This book takes you to another place. If you have any trouble understanding what a non-binary/gender non-conforming relationship or life looks like then please pick this up. You won't be able to put it down; I certainly couldn't. Empathy isn't something I struggle with but this book left me changed, regardless.

Brilliant, thought provoking. I run to grab my journal after reading certain passages, and others just read over and over. And over. Her musings on motherhood in particular are sublime, as is the way she weaves Feminist Theory and criticism into a prose that is readable. A breath of fresh, engaging air for a thinking reader. I look forward to exploring her entire body of work now.

Best thing I've read in months, in fact years. Defies categorisation, which is apt, because it's partly about the unhelpfulness of categories, and the imperitive of freedom, creativity, self-expression, and acceptance. I unhesitatingly recommend this book to anyone with a brain and a heart. It is also - incidentally - beautifully, lyrically, mind-expansdingly, heart-openingly written. Upon finishing it, I promptly logged on to buy more Maggie Nelson.

I've been teaching ESL for 20+ years and still learned a lot from this seasoned team's ideas. I teach at the elementary level in a pull-out, push-in setting and there was still a lot of good ideas in here for me. I particularly liked the description of the classroom routines and how they use lists of sentences about a topic (called Text Sets) to have students categorize and think about the topics. The categorized digital resources are worth the price of admission. Yes, Larry Ferlazzo has many of these on his website and, yes, some of the links just refer you there. It's the world's go-to for curated lists of sites for ELLs. I like that the book only lists a few of the best for each category.

I love this book because it is well organized with relevant information about teaching ESL to ELLs. There are great sample exercises and the best websites with even more information and resources to study. I needed something to update me on the latest research and effective methods for teaching ESL, since I've been living abroad for 5 years and felt "out of touch" with the world of formal education. There are many classes for learning English in the country where I live, but they use outdated methods which I find to be ineffective, as the students have difficulty applying their knowledge into practice for work or travelling. The students feel frustrated and like they have wasted their money. This is not a book for a teacher who wants day-by-day planning or a specific curriculum. It is more about how to teach better and create programs based on empirical evidence.

This book is potentially a career-saver for me. I am a teacher of ELL students in Taiwan, transitioning from year one to year two. Coming out of my first year, I have reflected on what I did well and what I could do better. The former, too little...the latter, too much. I returned to the U.S. for two weeks and brought back books similar to this one. Of the books I brought back, this has proven to be most effective, and I am excited about using the lessons I learned from this book, modifying them for my classroom, and, I hope, seeing some real progress from my students!There are a number of helpful game ideas, unit plans, and even relationship-building and classroom-management tips that I hope will prove highly beneficial to both me and my students.The reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is that, after a few chapters, the authors tend to recycle ideas and re-word their plans and lessons; the repetition is important, but I did skip a couple of pages here and there.Overall, a very helpful resource for teachers of all abilities!

A good book for teachers of English as a Second Language. It is especially useful for relatively new teachers. As someone who has been teaching ESL for some 20 years I found it to be of not much value to me.

This is a great book if you need to do something NOW to help English Language Learners! It is my new "go to" guide to demonstrate for teachers how to create easy and meaningful English Language Development strategies. Buy this book. You won't be sorry.

I'm a new ESL teacher and this is the FIRST ESL resource book I've come across that aligns with the teaching methodology I'm learning in Graduate School and actually makes sense. I'm about halfway through at this point and the insight I've gained thus fair is invaluable. I can't get through a single page without highlighting the hell out of key points and making notes in the margins. This book is a must if you're teaching ESL, especially in a school system, although the strategies and tactics can be applied to adults as well.

This was an excellent book for studying for the CTEL test! One of only two that I found that actually had useful info in it!

Thank you!So far, the "I am" Project (page 21), Chapter 3, pages 198, 199, Chapter 11 = are those that have the most penciled in margin notes and/or post-it reference tabs.It is one of those books that even a very experienced ESL / ESOL / ELL / EFL (whatever acronym you use) teacher/facilitator will be likely to find useful to review, even if just to be reminded of a few tricks that she or he has not used in awhile, to become more aware of research supporting the "why we do and try to do what we do and try to do."As someone who has been a fan of Larry Ferlazzo and his prolific blogging and tweeting for years, I felt I owed it to him -- and to visitors to my bookshelves -- to purchase a copy of this text. As an adult ELL educator, even though the book is marked for Grades 4 -12, many chapters and much of the information has relevancy.This is a text that is not likely to overwhelm newbies and/or classroom volunteers -- a quick flip-though may well lead to a careful reading of the Contents pages, and then to self-selected study.The Afterword is well chosen.The Notes section will make you wish for access to a hyper-linked copy of same!This is a great text to have near you while lesson-planning, at hand during peer-to-peer / staff committee meetings, a text to revisit frequently.Holly

Dover Publishing (God bless 'em) reprinted the 1926 Sears Modern Homes catalog many years ago and that reprint (apparently) enjoyed quite a bit of success. And that book - the 1926 reprint - was one of the books that turned me on to Sears Homes.This is another reprint of a Sears Modern Homes catalog, specifically the 1932 catalog. In their description, Dover calls it a "rare" catalog and it's not as common as the others but I don't know that I'd call it RARE.The only downside is the lack of color. The 1932 catalog was a beauty with lots of bright colors but that's a minor point here.I'm delighted to see this catalog reprinted. It shows the Sears Modern Homes program from a slightly different angle, with their "special order" homes featured. These fine and fancy homes were far cries from the kit bungalows that made Sears famous.It also has several testimonials and lots of cool trivia. For the Sears Home Aficionado, this one is worth the money.Roseauthor, "The Houses That Sears Built"and co-author, "California's Kit Homes"

I love this book. Page after page of drawings of 1930s houses made by Sears, Roebuck & Co with accompanying floor plans and a brief description of some of the features of each house. It also has a double page photo spread of some of the interior features of an average 30s home.

If I ever have money for a house, I'd love one of the cute Sears models.

I love this book. It has so many delicious breakfast egg sandwich ideas - from classic to gourmet. However, this book has so much more & turns the breakfast sandwich maker into a a versatile cooking tool. The cookbook has recipes for burgers and pizzas and a whole chapter devoted to desserts & snacks and there is a kid-friendly chapter too. It also has chapters for gluten-free cooking and for vegetarian lovers. Not all recipes include bread and not all recipes include egg. I would never have considered using the breakfast sandwich maker in so many creative ways and this book provides easy to follow instructions to make a meal in minutes. And, most importantly, the recipes I've tried so far are fantastic! And I definitely have a long list of ones I will be trying. With 150 recipes there are a lot to choose from.The breakfast sandwich maker and this book combined make a terrific gift at a very reasonable price. It's great for a college student, a family with busy activity schedules that are looking for quick & healthy individualized meals in minutes or anyone looking for easy & fast healthy meals in minutes (I'm 50+ and no kids). I also appreciate that the gadget is small & easy to clean.I highly recommend this book.

I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. I bought it BEFORE purchasing a double breakfast sandwich maker. I am very mindful of clutter and 'useless' appliances so I consider carefully. After reading through this cookbook, I couldn't wait to order my sandwich maker. It along with this book is a gem! Even though the 'maker' comes with a few recipes, this book really takes things over the top! I highly recommend it. Although it is true you can make these recipes on the stove/toaster, it is not as much fun or convenient as having the sandwich maker to go with it.

I bought this along with the breakfast sandwich maker for my father as a gift. He's an older single man and was eating out quite frequently. He loved the sandwich maker but having this cookbook really allowed him to get more use out of it. He now uses it for quick and easy snacks and lunches, as well as breakfast. There are a lot of great ideas in this book and you can also easily alter them to suite your taste.

A few recipes, with many many variations. Not really worth the price. And ALL involve egg WHITES. Guess I was hoping for something more. I gave it (and the sandwich maker) to my brother after making 1 recipe. Didn't like the sandwich enough. FWIW, I'm not a big fan of straight egg whites. And I couldn't give to my mother because she only uses the store-bought carton's of "Egg-beaters," which the machine says NOT to use.

Mom likes it, goes along with her new breakfast maker she got recently that she has now used several times and enjoys a great deal.There is a lot of information provided and a lot isn't just about breakfast so there is likely something for everyone here. It does seem fairly repetitive though so that makes it less useful in my opinion but as long as mom likes it since it is her book I guess that's all that matters.I don't know if this is really worth the asking price...with such repetition it seems it'd be better sold at $4.99 but again not mine to worry about and mom seems okay with it.

Great recipes for breakfast or lunch, vegetarians and carnivores. Bought it as an Xmas gift for my dad with the Hamilton Beach double breakfast sandwich maker. Big hit with everyone.

I gave this book and a sandwich maker to my 83 year old dad for Christmas a year ago. He uses it almost every day at lunchtime or breakfast. He shops for a variety of ingredients so he has lots of choices. My dad is the hardest one to buy for, this was a grand slam!

I don't give 5 star ratings often. I may come back and modify it but right now, minutes after finishing the book, I think it well deserves the 5 stars, and then some.I wanted to not like this book because of the rough language and the sometimes farcical scenes but those moments were outweighed by the times I wanted to reach out and take that little boy in my arms and snatch him from the damage I knew was being done to him.I'm glad I stuck with it. This memoir is one not to be missed. It is well written and just the right length. I don't think the Reader could take a lot more of Maria or June's abuse, even though each one has their own story that, looked at with distance from Brando's story, makes them very sympathetic in their own way.See if you can read it through and not cry like a baby at the last sentence. I couldn't.This one should not be missed.

This is one of the best memoirs I have ever read. I couldn't put it down. Skyhorse's voice is strong and clear, his themes were constant, and his story is absolutely incredible. Take This Man is the story of Brando Skyhorse, his mother and grandmother who raised him, and his five failed fathers. It sounds like it could be a very depressing story, but Skyhorse has a wry sense of humor about his life, and he can't argue with his mother's motto, "At least it's never boring."Take This Man is never boring, but that is the least of the reasons to read it. You'll fall in love with Skyhorse's style and heart. You'll be fascinated by his wacky and abusive family life. And you'll be warmed by his prose and hindsight philosophizing. Don't miss out on the highly unique memoir of Brando Skyhorse. It will be one of the best books you'll read all year.

Brando Skyhorse may have a unique name, but there are many Brando Skyhorses out there who don't have the same ability to tell their story. Here is a gifted writer who can articulate his narrative in a way that compels the reader to push onward into difficult territory. I might add that I taught for a decade in the area that Skyhorse inhabited and his descriptions are right on.

After a lifetime of working “office hours”, I have a personal rule that I must be productive during the day. No watching TV or reading for pleasure. I broke this 46-year-old rule for this book. I could not put it down.Many times I didn't think I could continue reading because it was too painful. Then it always made me laugh, like the grandmother’s line “Take a Tums and go to work”.It is a very rare book that makes me laugh and makes me cry. After suffering to the end of the book with Brando, I surprised myself when I turned to Chapter 1 and started reading it again.

One of the better memoirs I've read in a long time. Brando Skyhorse is an engaging writer who made his memoir a pleasure to read. Beautifully written by an extremely talented writer. Which now makes me want to read his novel Madonnas of Echo Park. Take this Man is a heart felt tale of a strange upbringing. Brando not only survived his life with his gruff Grandmother and dynamic bi-polar mother he actually managed to thrive; barely.

This is my first book my the Author, Brando Skyhorse. I found his re-telling of his childhood very compelling. Left me wondering how he managed to "survive", and be successful with such a tumultuous upbringing. The story "slowed" for me in the middle, which is they only reason I gave if 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise, it was a very good read!

I heard him on NPR and decided to get the book. Brando Skyhorse is able to reflect on his childhood with humor and sympathy for the people who brought him up. It would be easier to simply blame them but i found him to be introspective about how it shaped him (both good and bad). Now I want to read his first book.

This novel is very interesting and insightful from a child's POV of his mother who brought home many "Fathers". It's sad but can be very funny as well. Kept my interest to the very last page.

This vol. 1 presents the full-page strip complete from its beginning on June 19, 2015 to April 7, 2018.A&H Club is humorous, wince-inducing, feminist, all too true, and not to be missed.

What can I say? I love Rick Griffin's work and this one is a beauty. Many people could relate to the main characters in this comic as well. A&H Club will bring you a smile. Don't let the cover fool you. Too many people told me ''Oh! Another furry porn......''Well its not. Yes, there is mature content, but very little. But this book is more about an everyday person that tries to make ends meet and a good friend that does her best to help out as much as possible. Can't wait for Volume 2.

I've been following the comic online since it first started and have been a long time fan. The book is a treat to have with bones pics as well. The story is very down to earth and realistic/relatable. Normally I don't find that appealing in a furry story but it really works here. The comedy works but it never has the comic stray from the fact this is a drama. The romance isn't much, as this is volume one the two leads never move past friends, but their are hints of more development down the line. It's an enjoyable read with great art and as someone who as read it both online and printed, the printed is so much more lively visually.Big important note, issues 1/2 are B&W and 3 is in color, don't be surprised.

This comic is pretty great, I like the whole story aspect with the single mom needing help. Even if this is a lesbian furry comic, I can relate to some of the real life themes. I will be looking forward to the next volume!

After years of lurking on Housepets!, I finally decided to help support Rick Griffin via my wallet. This was a charming story, and I look forward to the next volume!

I happen to come across bits of the story, and decided to buy the book.Just good solid story telling, with a nice use of humor. Rick Griffin is just,.., fun!

As an ardent fan of Rick Griffin's work, this graphic novel was a must-have for my collection. Aside from the great art, Rick tells a poignant tale of a single mother and her best friend. And while the players are anthropomorphic, their situations are very real.

Always a fan of the art style and the kind of stories Rick Griffin makes. Cute animal people with real emotions. Love it!
