I like FODOR's travel books, they are so detailed, one does not need to go to multiple sources of finding where to go when visiting a new city. This book covers all the good places to visit and covers off the beaten track places. I have been using FODOR's books for over 20 years and am very pleased with them. It is true one can search online for places to see but there is nothing than a book to carry and look for places to see, especially in foreign cities where cell phone data plans are expensive.

The economy in BA has changed dramatically since this book was published and so ALL of the prices in the book are wrong - assume **everything** is two or three times more expensive (museums, restaurants, etc.) than stated in the book.

The guide was good; a few items were out of date, such as the information about purchasing tickets for theBuenos Aires metro. 10 ticket packs are no longer sold; one must buy a reloadable smart card which can be hard to accomplish at smaller stations. Otherwise we enjoyed the recommendations. about Iguazu Falls that are also included in this volume.However the book arrived water logged which was really not acceptable.

I bought my old standby, Lonely Planet guide and decided to get a second perspective since we would be in Buenos Aires for almost a month. The Fodor's has a lot of great information and advice, but seems more difficult to navigate than Lonely Planet. That could purely be because I'm familiar with its format, but I've been using Fordor's as a back up, traveling around the city with Lonely Planet.

Not as easy to navigate, nor as in depth as I had hoped.

great book with lots of good information. The walking tours, addresses, and hours were especially helpful. I just wish it was a bit smaller for easy carrying

The author chronicles the late 18th- and early 19th-century process of building a fleet that could project American power beyond her shores. Not confined to sea battles, Toll's history of the U.S. Navy's formative decades, from the mid-1790s to the War of 1812, rounds out affairs by anchoring the nascent navy to its financial supports. Navies are not inexpensive, and the costs of building and maintaining ships appear lightly but persistently in Toll's narrative. It centers on the first vessels purpose-built for the navy, the half-dozen frigates of which the USSConstitution moored in Boston today is the last survivor. Besides money, their construction involved politics; the Federalists favored the naval program (creating the Department of the Navy in 1798), while Jefferson's parsimonious Republicans were more diffident. Why did I read this book? I'm in this mood where I'm not interested in fiction. I hadn't been able to finish any of the fiction books I was reading, so I started reading a history book called The Fourth Part of the World. A fascinating read on what could have been a very dry subject, a map. I blew threw it in a few days and wanted more. Next I read 1776. A very well known book, deservedly so. I was impressed. But I was done, and was hungry for more, particularly from that time period. I stumbled upon Six Frigates and started in.I couldn't put it down.Not only is the book captivating and intense, it is sincere in it's historical accuracy (unlike other history books I've read that try to make the work into a Hollywood thriller). While reading, you get the sense that this was extremely well researched. At the same time, the descriptions make you feel like you're living the moment. And the insights into our founding fathers are so well illustrated that you come away feeling as if you know the people, or better yet, as if Ian Toll knew them and is tell us about people with which he is well acquainted.Why is the book important? In Ian's own words, he "set out to write a book about the founding of the U.S. Navy, yet ended up writing a book about the founding of our country".The book is about how a government decides when to use force overseas, defend its rights against the world superpower, and enter the world stage. THis is an underdog story, sure. And a rousing adventure. But it also sheds light on how 13 colonies became one nation.

Today, we take the U.S. Navy and our dominance over the world’s oceans for granted. But as Ian Toll’s Six Frigates explains, this result was not predestined, resulting from a number of decisions make at land and sea. Toll not only puts on board the six sailing ships for which the book is named, but in the Halls of Congress, the Executive Mansion (as it was known before being named “The White House”), on wharves and in the offices of nautical architects. By combining politics, economics, architecture and many other facets with his tales of sailing and naval combat Toll, provides his readers with a full appreciation for the complicated story of how the U.S. emerged from an foundling nation with no navy to the beginning of the realization that it was only a matter of time before it would surpass England’s mastery of the seas.Toll assumes no knowledge of nautical affairs, explaining the difference between a frigate and other naval vessels (although he can get somewhat technical in the battle scenes), and takes particular joy in recounting the initial controversy over their design. In so doing he introduces us to a little known but fascinating figure in early American history, Joshua Humphreys, who conceived their controversial design and touched off a firestorm with jealous rivals. That Humphreys prevailed in his battles with his critics would play a crucial role in the frigates’ success, and Toll does not slight it.The fight with the Barbary pirated during the Jefferson administration was the Navy’s first test, and Toll spends a good deal of time recounting it. The naval aspects of the War of 1812 also comes in for comprehensive coverage. Unfortunately, the tale mostly ends there without covering the post war return to Africa that put the Barbary Pirates out of business once and for all from the US perspective. By the end of the story, the US navy is well established, it’s leading officers the chief heroes of the young Republic rivalled only by Andrew Jackson for his victory over the British at New Orleans. As the book closes we see James Madison, who fought the navy’s creation with Thomas Jefferson during the Washington and Adams administration, overseeing the second great wave of ship building featuring vessels that will dwarf the original six.Toll makes only a single mistake I detected. In his epilogue of post 1815 naval history highlights he attributes the America’s entry in World War One to the sinking of the Lusitania. Although that disaster played an important part in a longer process, it was not the proximate cause that Toll presents it to be. But that it very tangential to what is a fascinating story wonderfully told.

In 1794, President Washington signed legislation authorizing the construction of 6 heavy frigates. These ships were to help protect American shipping interests and to counter the British practice of forcing American sailors to serve on British ships.The wood for each frigate would require several hundred live oak trees. The frame pieces could only be cut from the largest and oldest trees, about one in fifty. Live oak was sought for its extraordinary strength and resistance to both salt air and rot. It had a lifespan 5 times that of white oak. But shipyard workers dreaded the extra work it took to cut and shape it. A nail driven into it was nearly impossible to extract. Axes bounced off it and saws moved back and forth across it again and again, barely making progress.Live oak trees were difficult to obtain. They grew in the uninhabited coastal islands of Georgia. The first ninety axe-men and ship-carpenters arrived from Connecticut on St. Simon Island, Georgia. They immediately contracted malaria. All but three returned home.From the design of the ships and their complex construction, to battling the Barbary pirates of Tripoli off North Africa, to the legislative debates on their high cost to our fledgling economy, to the hair-raising sea battles against the mightiest navy that ever existed (the British), this story is engaging from start to finish.

I was so amped to do this challenge and I did do it. The juices are okay, some better than others and some just hard to get down. The smoothies on each end of the day are always looked forward to. I lost over 20lbs during the challenge and I felt amazing all through it. The down sides are, you will be hungry, sorry, but that is the truth. You will miss food. I got tired of all my intake coming through a straw. I also started to view my juicer with a degree of trepidation. It is a lot of work. Over all, I am glad I did it. I don't know that I would ever do the 28 days again, but I definitely would do a week to detox and boost myself. Some of the smoothies are worth having as supplements to a normal diet. Very healthy.

I did the 28-day plan (not perfectly, but nearly so!). 70% of pain left my body. I lost 15 pounds, and 17.5". There were 2 or 3 juices I found a bit sweet for me so I cut the amount of apples or pears in those juices and was sure to drink water in between sips of juice. Monday through Friday I'm going to continue on with breakfast and lunch juices and having a "regular" meal in the evenings. On weekends, the plan is a breakfast juice and regular meals for lunch and dinner.

What a great experience! I completed the 28 day challenge two weeks ago and I continue to juice and or blend for breakfast and lunch. I lost 20 pounds, feel better than before I started, and there is no hunger pangs once you get past a few days and your body adjusts to receiving real nutrition like it is designed to. I would have lost more weight if I didn't suffer from chronic fatigue and was able to exercise more, but I still feel better than I have in a long time. Thank you Jason!

Great read. I'm currently 19 days in and feeling great. I don't know how much weight I have lost since part of the challenge is to not weigh yourself during it, but my belt has gone done three holes and my face is thinner. Looking forward to jumping on the scale and seeing. If you take on the challenge don't forget to measure yourself to compare against your ending numbers.

I used the app with it and I loved it! Loved it is the wrong ? I lost 25lbs! Have to love that part. I cut the fruit in half most days or didn't add them at all. My drinks may have been bigger also . I drank the shot in the am and made my four drinks for the day at once in the a.m. four sixteen oz bottles. I love all veggies so this wasn't hard for me. I just couldn't except that one inch of broccoli stem and one asparagus stick was the overload of nutrition to get me through. So I always threw a few extra veggies. Yes you will get sick of the work to make the juices but by then you be losing weight and feeling great. First few days my skin looked so much better and I had energy even though I had to give coffee! I'm a forever juicer now.

I never was able to follow the juicing diet, altered it by having bowl of fruit for breakfast, for lunch I mix my veges and fruit in my little Ninga chopper, for dinned I have some protein and salad. I did it mostly for wt loss and from 132# I went down to 119. My initial hope was 7#. Never lost wt. by dieting and this was the most painless process. I still use it but don't want to loose any more wt. Now I add some carbs here and there.

Love the plan. My cholesterol dropped 100 points and i lost an average of a pound a day. If i was hungry i used a little extra avocado. The coaching videos are very helpful.

On Day 5 and lost 5lbs already I also have the app and think having both the book and the app are super helpful

I loved the author's ability to tell his story in a very personal way, holding my attention during the details as well as the edge-of-my-seat moments. We learn the science within a historical perspective on the global stage. He makes me care, and want to learn more. What a big life he has lived and important legacy he has left.

Alex Dehgan does an excellent job of bringing you to the front lines of conservation and conflict in this well written book. Highly recommend it for all interested in how to save the wild of the planet in the face of political upheaval and the weakening of civil societies.

Dehgan brings a refreshing, remarkable new perspective to Afghanistan--the "Graveyard of Empires"-- is vibrantly alive. Its amazing biodiversity, natural resources and stunning landscapes are too often ignored. Dehgan's mission is an unusual one; "warzone conservation" sounds like an oxymoron, and a dangerous one at that. The story of his teams' work--first to document wildlife and then build the first ever national park--is compelling, wrenching and often very funny. Dehgan is a winsome companion on the page; he takes his work seriously, but he is self-deprecating, candid and adept at describing both science and the singular world in which he operates. Science, diplomacy and conservation are not words that usually belong together, but this book demonstrates another level at which countries, organizations and individuals can work together toward a common goal.

I loved this book! Dehgan tells a compelling story of his experiences in Afghanistan, where he led efforts to create the first national park. His style is light and entertaining, even though he is discussing a war-torn country with many challenges. His love and enthusiasm for the people, culture, and ecology of the country really shine through this text. This book combines the best of adventure, travel memoir, naturalist account, and political commentary that really transforms the media portrayal of Afghanistan. He also weaves his own story of being an Iranian-American into the story in a powerful way. I was left with an overwhelming desire to explore remote regions with the author - he would be the ultimate travel partner and guide to the misunderstood and undervalued parts of our world!

Full disclosure, I've known Alex a long time and seen his passion has took on the mission in Afghanistan. Reading this book made all those days come alive again and more. There are incredible lessons here on how to think about conservation in general, but more importantly how to have a can do attitude. The best part of the book is that you get to see what it is like to work with a pure heart and make a real difference in the world

First, this is a glossary of terms + ads for pay SEO services. If I wanted to pay someone for services I wouldn't buy a book to tell me who to pick. Very bad.Second, the book is loaded with misprinted pages, especially the photos. See attached pics.Wow. What a waste of money. :(

This is an exceptional resource that I should have read much earlier in my web career. I own and operate two businesses that are predominantly driven through web traffic, and have relied exclusively on outsourced SEO. This book provides ANYONE who has a website and relies on it for their livelihood to gain enough knowledge to effectively manage their vendors, if not enough to handle the basics in-house. The book was written about 5 years ago - after the last "big wave" of changes in how Google ranks and the Bing/Yahoo combo for search. Based on what I know, the information and approach is still solid. While the vendors and some of the tactics have changed - and the pace of change on the web is extreme - the book hits the spot.

Easy to understand and very thorough.I expect the next edition out relatively soon, but this book was too good to not have a copy of.

The four authors did a great job in the scope of the subject matter in this book. The publisher did a great job with The Table of Contents, Glossary and Index as all are comprehensive.This book should have a 5-star rating. However, the publisher provides page after page of screen captures that are not legible! I paid $45.36, including sales tax, for this book and should return it, based upon the very poor reproduction of the many screen captures. However, I'll retain it, based upon the excellence of material provided by the four authors.The staff at O'Reilly Media produced a quality book with good typography, cover design, paper stocks and perfect binding. This leads me to be completely baffled by their complete disregard of the terrible quality of the screen captures throughout the book.This book is worth purchasing. But be forewarned, as you may be as frustrated as I am, about the terrible reproduction of every screen capture throughout the book.

This is one monster of a book on SEO. Very technically written, not for the ultra-novice, "just starting out online" reader in my opinion.But, after reading this, I got the feeling that I received a firm and solid education on the subject in a WIDE variety of areas. Not to mention, I am a fan of books that can be technically written without sounding "ultra-clinical".I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has read a bunch of blogs or other info on SEO (some of which is misinformation), and really wants the foundational education to keep on their bookshelf as a reference.

Keep this book onyour shelf for a handy reference. It's a great text book for those who want to know SEO. Of course, it constantly changes, but this offers the basics and you'll be glad you have it. I am a co-founder of a fiancial services website and wanted an introductory book on SEO. I was only familar with Adwords at the time. I wanted a book to provide me with a foundation of knowledge of all of the basic concepts of SEO and how to further expand my study. Not too technical that I couldn't understand it, but not too simple that would provide no value. I also did not want a book which sugar-coated the ease and effectiveness of SEO. This book delieved. I highly recommend to anyone beginning their exploration of SEO to buy and read this book. I plan on reading the book a second time, to take extensive notes to reference for further study.

The content was very good. However the problem is that the book should have been 200 pages shorter, at least. Many parts repeat themselves multiple time throughout the book. It's clear that there were multiple authors, and they did not take the time to make sure concepts were not repeated needlessly.

Jim Finley is like a glacier, with only a little bit protruding above, but untold depths beneath the surface. I loved how succinct Finley is in this book. His writing is beautiful, packing a great deal into a sentence. I found “Merton’s Palace of Nowhere” to be an exceptional summary of Merton. Merton is hard to summarize, but Finley pulls it off because he shares the spacious non-dual mind of Merton, who was his mentor at Gethsemane Abbey. Probably my favorite line from the book… “Prayer never touches us as long as it remains on the surface of our lives, as long as it is nothing but one more of the thousands of things that must be done. It is only when prayer becomes ‘the one thing necessary’ that real prayer begins (pg. 17).”-Amos Smith (author of Healing The Divide: Recovering Christianity's Mystic Roots)

You won't get a wordy scholarly discussion from me. No need to overstate or embellish. This book is a treasure of simple direct thought. I've been reading Merton for years. He fits very comfortably beside my Buddhist texts, writings on the Tao, and the Chinese mountain poets. I find Merton's unique synthesis of insights from Christianity and Eastern thought to be true sustenance. I read and re-read Merton and use this particular commentary as a support to morning meditation. Merton's view is fresh and powerful... His teachings ring with gentle truth. Here, James Findley's loving condensing of Merton's core teaching is a true Gift. Brief... but rich. Authoritative...but intimate. This is a wonderful book.

I found that this book offers a solid core point that I could grasp: we are naked and nothing creatures, so we are constantly tempted to make our selves something, creating a false self. God wants us to be our true self, which starts at being one who is loved by him (something we cannot create, but just receive).There are other points around this main point that at times I could grasp, but these points mostly seemed ethereal. I need to read this book a few more times before I'll grasp these points.So I recommend the book to those who've been on the spiritual formation journey for a while, but I would not recommend it to people just starting out. A better book to start with would be Brennan Manning's book, "Abba's Child" in which Manning does cite Merton a few times. "Abba's Child" basically makes the same point as this book, but in a much more accessible way.

This review is on the Kindle edition. The book is excellent and is a must read for any person interested in Thomas Merton's spirituality. I have read many of Merton's books, and I could have used Finley's incites in all of them.Now the Kindle edition. The navigation is nearly non-existent. This would not be an issue if the book was reduced in price, but it isn't. There are numerous citations in the text referring to the expansive bibliography and notes. Hit any of them and all you will do is advance to the next page or return to the previous page.The book also has no formal Table of Contents, but considering that Finley chose not to title the sections and chapters, a formal Table of Contents would have limited use. I do wish that Finley would have titled the sections and chapters, he certainly organized the information well enough.I rate my book reviews on their content, not their navigation.

If you feel as if you’re reading the same Christian monologue over and over with every book you read, it’s time to move on to Finley. This is the advanced class (a class that teaches you that this thing called obedience is less work than we ever imagined, but that is just the beginning of the journey). This book in addition to Christian Meditation changed my life and the way I think about God and how to gain true presence with Him. Reading it in the morning during quiet time is how I best recommend it.

I can't recommend this book enough for those interested in gaining a solid foundation from which they can build a genuine spiritual life. I have a master's degree in divinity from a Catholic seminary and wish I'd found this book a lot sooner. It's not a new book, published in 1978, but is truly timeless in the truths it so clearly reveals in such an orderly and readable manner. Thomas Merton, I'm sure, is very happy with this humble, gentle and powerful synthesis of his teaching. Basically Mr. Finley clarifies the tremendous danger of creating false images of ourselves that trap us in our spiritual growth, the goes on to help us free ourselves from these "idols". By humbly emptying ourselves of self images and meaningless self-serving, egoistic obsessions we can discover our true self rooted in and saturated by the person of Christ, our true self. I'd personally recommend accompanying this book with a practice of Centering Prayer (check out centeringprayer.com or .org).. The combination of the two could turn your spiritual life around for the better.

I would agree with the other reviewer that this book is the most rewarding book I have read to date. I'd been interested in reading Merton and learning about his thought for years since so many of my spiritual "mentors" were themselves "mentored" by Merton. But he was so prolific and so deep I wasn't sure where to start and was looking for a kind of "Merton for Dummies" book! This book is that and so much more.Sometimes people's gift is in creative, original thought (Merton in this case). And sometimes people's gift is to be able to understand another's thoughts/teaching and to synthesize them into a coherent whole. This is Finley's gift. I don't know that I've ever read such a well laid out book that took me bit by bit in a logical order through a complex subject allowing me to safely arrive at the end (where if you'd tried to start me there I might have misunderstood it).I can't highly recommend this book enough if you are interested in spirituality.
