I don't know diddly squat about cars but always wanted to learn. I had no one to teach me, so what am I to do? I saw this book and read the reviews and I had to have it. Not even a dozen pages in and you're already running to your car checking under the hood! It tells you exactly how to do everything, from the most basic to the slightly more advanced. So even a dummy (lol) can do it. This book should be given to everyone when they purchase their first car. It'll save you a ton of money and hassle! The first day I was reading I found out my oil was low and that I had possibly the world's dirtiest cabin air filter. Not anymore!

Decided I needed to learn a bit more about cars after my friend's car died on the road. They opened the hood and we both stood there looking at the inside like "Um . . . what?" Figured it be good to do some reading up on cars, especially since I'm buying one soon. Book is really informative with in depth detail. Makes the interior of a car seem a little less scary and a lot more manageable.

I was so impressed with this Dummies guide that it is now stored in my older vehicle for instant reference in preparation for if/when the next mechanical issue/breakdown occurs.It paid for itself with the great tip about purchasing gas early in the morning before it expands with the natural heat of the day; more for your money when it's cooler.Every woman should carry this in her car along with the emergency tool kit.

This is actually the second time that I bought this book because I lost my first copy. I've never been much of a fan of the "For Dummies" series, but this book is an exception. Although it will not make you a Master mechanic, it will supply you with enough information so that you at least can navigate yourself throughout the Auto World and make sure that you don't get screwed by other people. It covers a lot of things: how to give the car basic service needs, how the engine and drivetrain work, and even some tips on how to buy a car properly. Definitely worth the price and at least a one-time read.

The first few chapters alone are worth a few bucks... thinking specifically of the chapter about monthly maintenance made easy, checking your fluids and other basic wear and tear. Will you save you a fortune in the long run, plus it's just nice to know those sorts of things.

This book teaches you not only about the motor,but also you can learn how to fix diesel and electrics. It also explains what tools you really need,So don't need to spend $500 for mechanic set. And Last it teaches tips, pros,cons and warning for your car.

After 48 years of faithful service, my 1966 Plymouth Valiant gave up the ghost and I needed another car. The prospect filled me with dread for apart from checking automotive websites and Consumer Reports, I had no idea how to go about seeking/purchasing another car. Buying a Car for Dummies was a goldmine of helpful information on all aspects of buying a used/new car and was money well spent. Heartily recommended!

I finished reading this book about six months ago and delayed writing a review of the book until I had a chance to contrast the contents of the book with the Oracle 10g R2 RMAN documentation and other books on the same subject. I bought the book after reading recommendations by several individuals, and thought that this book was the perfect opportunity to refresh by memory of the Oracle 8i documentation of RMAN and bring me up to speed with the command line interface of RMAN in Oracle 10g R2. The Enterprise Manager Database Control in Oracle 10g R2 almost over simplifies the process of setting up backups, but there is always that nagging question... what if the GUI interface is down, underscoring why it is important to be familiar and comfortable with the command line interface when restore and recovery are needed. I was also preparing to give a presentation related to Oracle administration and performance tuning. This book did not meet the criteria for inclusion in the recommended resources for the presentation, and for that matter neither did any other RMAN book, with the possible exception of the Oracle documentation.While the book excels at explaining what makes RMAN tick, I personally found that the book is actually a bit difficult to use when trying to implement a change to the Oracle configuration. The section on database cloning, for instance, is more difficult to follow than Oracle's own "Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide" documentation on the same topic. Maybe it is just me (and one or two other people). Flipping between several pages (seemed like a hundred or more) is not confidence inspiring had this been a real emergency.I then decided to try a couple recovery scenarios. I set up an Oracle 10.2.0.4 database instance on a new box, used impdp to load a copy of the data from a production database, enabled archived redo log mode, and then scheduled a backup using the Enterprise Manager Database Control. The first test involved shutting down the Oracle instance, and renaming both copies of the control files. The first attempt in following the "Oracle Database 10g RMAN Backup & Recovery" book to recover from this problem resulted in "ORA-07445: exception encountered: core dump [ACCESS_VIOLATION] [unable_to_trans_pc] [PC:0x7c910CB0] [ADDR:0x4] [UNABLE_TO_READ] []". The book did not cover how to recover from the ORA-07445, which essentially means that Oracle Metalink support must be contacted - the database is down. Not too reassuring. The second attempt (after recreating the instance and database) of following the book to perform this procedure, after realizing that I should have specified RESETLOGS (if I recall correctly, it seems that information was located somewhere else in the book) resulted in "ORA-19698: ...\redo01.log is from different datadase: id=0, db_name=" following the execution of ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS. Once again, scanning through this book I did not find the solution to this particular problem. Had this been a real emergency, this book would not have been the only object to hit the recycle bin.Other miscellaneous notes about the book, in no particular order:* 100+ pages of the book are devoted to setting up RMAN to work with various storage/media managers.* RMAN workshops list steps to accomplish various tasks, often spread over 5+ pages in the book. Not all required information is located in close proximity to the RMAN workshops.* Covers command line and Enterprise Manager GUI commands for RMAN.* Demonstrates flashback versions queries, flashback table, flashback drop, flashback database* Many screen shots, diagrams, RMAN Workshop break outs, large font - space filling section headings, seemingly wide margins.* Some steps which should be straight forward, such as duplicating a database using RMAN, appear to be very simple when reading the book, yet when attempting to put those simple procedures into practice using the book as a guide, are in fact quite difficult due to all of the alternate syntax which is introduced to cover many different set ups. It might be necessary to flip between 50 different pages to successfully duplicate a database on the same server using this book as a guide.* The book does not indicate what features described in the book require an Enterprise Edition license, nor what features require additional licenses beyond an Enterprise Edition license (this seems to happen in several books by different authors).* In a crisis, the Recovery Case Studies in chapter 21, which could prove to be the most helpful section of the book, but that section only covers 13 scenarios, all with generally a long description to describe the recovery case study problem.This book is spared a three star recommendation only by the fact that I enjoyed reading the book cover to cover.Recently, I have been reading "RMAN Recipes for Oracle Database 11g: A Problem-Solution Approach" and have found that the book is better organized, locating the necessary information in the right places for accomplishing a task, although there is a bit of over repeating in the book (the same sentence appears in two adjacent paragraphs, for example). While the RMAN Recipes book states that it is designed for Oracle 11g, there are output captures which show that some of the sections of the book were written using Oracle 10.2.0.x. If you are considering the purchase of "Oracle Database 10g RMAN Backup & Recovery", you might first want to examine "RMAN Recipes for Oracle Database 11g: A Problem-Solution Approach" through the Google books search to determine if it is a better fit for your anticipated backup and recovery scenarios.

Great book for the price. One of the better Oracle books available on using RMAN as your backup solution.. If you are still on 10g and are using RMAN this is the book to purchase. I am going to purchase the newer 11g version and hope it is as good as this 10g book.

This book does a pretty good job of explaining RMAN features and offers some good ideas on how to make RMAN part of your day to day Oracle tool set. Some( all?) of the examples use 10gR2 syntax which will not work with 10gR1, so pay attention! Oracle is trying very hard to make RMAN be everything experienced and novice DBAs need from a comprehensive backup/recovery tool, as a result a book such as this that can simplify and clarify is money well spent.

I recommend this book to any DBA.Gives you a very good idea of how RMAN works and how backups are performed.

Backup and Recovery is one of the most critical tasks that a DBA has to perform. Sadly, it is also one of the most misunderstood. RMAN should be the tool of choice for backup and recovery for Oracle databases. There is so much that can be done with RMAN.What Robert and Matthew do is break it down piece by piece. There is a great intro and they build on that in subsequent chapters. If you want to link RMAN directly with your backup software (i.e. Veritas, EMC, Legato, etc..) then the authors show you how. I used the Veritas piece to link RMAN in and it worked flawlessly. They go over the latest features including block changing files (for faster incremental backups), merging level 1 and level 0 backups (for faster recoveries without the overhead of backing up the whole database), and even cover what the flash recovery area is and how to use it. There is so much great material packed in this book. Yeah, you can try and read Oracle's docs, but rather than just show you how to do it, the authors also teach you why to do it.You can read this book chronologically or use it as a reference. The authors writing style make this book a great joy to read. They also include a lot of great examples in case you like to learn by seeing.I would highly recommend this book if you are an Oracle DBA, whether you use RMAN or not. Afterall, RMAN is what you should be using :).

Some of Walton's books include The Lost World of Adam and Eve, The Lost World of Scripture, The Lost World of Genesis One, Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament, The Essential Bible Companion, The NIV Application Commentary: Genesis and The IVP Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament (with Victor Matthews and Mark Chavalas). Walton and Longman have produced a very insightful and readable introduction to Job, one of the more difficult books in the Canon. This book forced me to think through many of the key issues in the book of Job. A great starting point is realizing that Job is not ultimately a book about suffering, but a book about God's policies in how he runs his creation. They make that point very strongly and it was a great observation. If you don't know what Job is about, you'll never come to any right conclusions about it.They stake out a number of controversial positions which will surely upset some.1. Job should be read as a parable and not as history.2. The Satan of Job 1-2 is not the same as the Satan of the New Testament.3. Job has no concept of eternal life as Christians conceive it through the later revelation of the New Testament.4. Against the more fundamentalist types, they argue that Job is not describing the water cycle and Leviathan and Behemoth are not dinosaurs.You might have just read that list and decided there is no reason you should read this book. If so, I might gently challenge you to reconsider ... Walton and Longman make their case for their positions gently and respectfully. And even if you believe they are wrong (I had many disagreements with them) it is worthwhile to hear what the other side is saying so you can more correctly understand why you disagree.This book was written to be read by the average church-goer. There is no expectation that the reader will know Hebrew or have a seminary degree. Your understanding of the book of Job will surely be much fuller as a result.

A terrific and easy to follow - most of the time - introduction into the major people, themes, and applications of the Book of Job. If you're interested in Job or other "wisdom" literature, this is a good book to read out of the gate. Definitely evangelical in nature although they do present issues that cause many in the evangelical world to scratch their collective heads.

Job is a fascinating book for many reasons. Walton and Longman brought to me a new and unexpected perspective that revolutionized my understanding of the book and consequently brought a deeper understanding of God, which of course is the point of bible study. Do not hesitate to buy this or any book by John Walton or Tremper Longman.

For me it was a pleasure to read it it make sense from the beginning to the end.

Very helpful for a meaningful study of Job.

Job. It's one of those books that we often don't know what to do with, but we think we know everything about it. The story seems straight forward enough. Job is a good and righteous man who is put to a test when the devil challenges God. As a result, Job loses all that he has and his health as well. His own wife says to curse God and die and his three friends who come to comfort him instead end up getting in a religious debate with him telling him he needs to repent. Job stands against them and in the end, God speaks to Job and Job recognizes the grandeur of God and he receives back all the wealth that he lost doubled. Through this, we better understand suffering in the universe.Or maybe we don't....Frankly, if Job is meant to address the question of why we suffer, it did a terrible job. Job himself at the end of the story does not know why he suffered and while he does get back everything and more, it would have still left a lasting impression on him. In fact, we look at many times that Job speaks angrily in the book before God shows up and think "This guy doesn't sound so righteous right now." When God shows up, we're even more puzzled. Rather than give an answer as to what happened, God looks more like He's saying "Yo! I'm God! Sit down and shut up once you hear about all the cool things I can do!"Maybe we're misreading Job then. Maybe in fact the question is not at all about why good people suffer. Good people suffering is just what puts a deeper question in perspective.What if the deeper question behind the book is "Why should any man be righteous?" Often times Christians are asked by atheists if they would be a good person if there was no God. That's a valid question and it's a question not just for Christians but for anyone. Why should anyone be good? Let's also keep in mind that when we talk about this goodness, the talk is entirely about life on this side of eternity. Longman and Walton argue that Job is really not arguing for an afterlife even in some of our places where we think he does. The book doesn't even hint at one at the end when it would make the most sense. Everything is about this life.Job lives in a worldview with a basic principle that if you do good you can expect good and if you do evil, you can expect to be punished. A major difference between Job and his friends and the world around them is that there is no trace of polytheism being spoken about. There is no indication that there is a ritual that Job needs to undertake in order to be pronounced pure. The topic is all about moral shortcomings. In fact, contrary to what we might think, Job might not be as much of a saint as we think. The narrator tells us Job offered sacrifices for each of his children after they all got together in case one of them sinned and cursed God in their hearts. The problem is we have no indication that this happened and could such a sacrifice even provide for the children to begin with? Is this a hint that Job has a view of a capricious deity sitting at the computer ready to hit the smite button?Of course, Job is noble in that he doesn't curse God when struck with calamity, but he is less than noble when he throughout his dialogue accuses God of being unjust and asks for an advocate. Note he's not wanting what we often think he wants. We tend to see Jesus in the advocate. Job is not wanting someone to atone for his sins so he can be righteous before God because he thinks he already is. Job is wanting someone who will stand before God on his behalf and argue that God is unjust. It would be a wasted attempt anyway. What would Job gain if he showed God was unjust anyway?Meanwhile, his friends and everyone else does seem to follow the principle above known as the retribution principle. After all, if Job is suffering, well he must have sinned in some way. It's amazing that this book is one written that shows that our individual sin is not the cause of all the suffering that we go through in life, and yet we still hold to that doctrine. How many of us in a time of suffering start looking at our lives trying to find that one sin, even if it was a sin that was committed decades ago, that we think God is holding us accountable for? If so, what kind of God do we think we're serving? That's not to say that there's never time for self-examination, but are we making God into someone spiteful?The point we are to get out of the story is about the importance of wisdom, which is talked about much in this book, especially at the start of Job's final long discourse. The wisdom in the end is to learn to trust God. God's resume is not to just say "Hey! I can do cool stuff!" It's saying "I keep this whole universe in motion. You do not. Do you think I don't know what I'm doing?" Comparisons are drawn with the two animal creatures described also with the implication being that for the latter definitely, God is greater than this beast. You could not begin to know how to tame this beast and bend Him to your will. With God it is impossible.This leaves us thinking about prayer. Many times in prayer we do try to manipulate God. I know I've been guilty of it in the past and it's really hard to learn to come to God and realize there's no magic formula where you can say just the right words and then God will give you what you want. You also can't just say "Look at all my good deeds" and then think that God is obligated to give you something. The book should teach us that God has no obligations to us. He does not owe us a single thing. Everything that he gives us is an act of grace. This is something I will have to watch for more when I pray and no doubt, I will make the mistake again in the future.Also, rather than be a book to aid us in suffering, this should be a book that is a boot camp for us before we enter suffering. It will cause us to ask the question if we properly read it of "Would I serve God even if there was no reward?" We could think of other parallels. Would the husband love his wife if sex was no longer part of the deal? Would the wife love her husband if he could no longer provide financial or physical security? How many of our relationships involve loving so we can get something that we want rather than doing the right thing because it's the right thing? How many of us have a walk with God like that? Of course God promises to reward us for our faithfulness and even uses that as our motivation, but we are not to be purely mercenary.Walton and Longman's book will give you a lot to think about. The view I have of Job has been drastically changed by reading this book and I think in fact for the better. I now seek to ask myself why I strive to live a righteous life and make my motivations pure. About the Author

Tamara is a daughter and mother to mental illness. She has witnessed and healed from three suicide attempts by those closest to her―two by her mother, and one by her son. Tamara spent years going to therapy, for herself and with her son, learning how to balance living with mental health with having a strong sense of self. FINALLY... a non-clinical, comprehensive book written that is brutally honest (and sometimes hilarious bc we have to laugh at the madness) about the every day trauma we may endure as parents of a mentally ill child, be it a disorder related to anxiety, depression, ADHD, personality, eating, development, stress, sleep, fatigue, impulse control, social etc. etc. The narrative is conversational, relatable and offers legit doable solutions as well as recognizing some of our own behaviours (yep! she goes there, and hard!) that we don't see in the cloud of confusion and despair. This book is ultimately a guide, scrap that, a bible for any parent that is facing raising a child that is challenged in any behavioural or mental related issues. Buy it! Read it! Zero regrets, I promise!

A HUGE help to the accompanying Bible study workbook. Revelations is a tough book to get through, and these notes were incredibly helpful in getting through the group Bible study.

I've been using this book for our Bible Study Group very successfully for the past 8 weeks. It is meant to be used as an individual study guide along with group discussion. Each of the sections in the book cover 2-3 chapters of Revelations. Our group of 6-7 people meets weekly and we are taking one section per week. There are 8 questions per section on average, and we typically take the full 90 mins to discuss them. The questions are more than just content, they promote great discussion. I would recommend "BE Victorious" as an excellent tool to support an in-depth Group Study of Revelations.

Warren Wiersbe has a way of cutting through confusing Scripture and making it clearer. A talented teacher and writer, he takes a complicated book like Revelation and applies Bible scholar explanations for a better understanding of the text. Recommend his Be series books as a nice companion to the Bible. Thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter are a nice small group study bonus. Grace and peace.

Another excellent study by Warren Wiersbe. Revelation is a difficult book to get a handle on but Warren Wiersbe unwraps it in a way I could understand more clearly and has given me a challenge to be victorious in my life because my life is in Christ. Highly recommend!

Gave me a better understanding of the book of RevelationS and I love how he draws the reader back to Christ and our need for daily repentance and continued service for the Lord. I thought that it was crucial how he gave the reader a chance to think through questions and come to salvation !

This book has been a great help in trying to understand Revelation. Author gives a lot of history about the times which helps to explain what John is trying to convey. Explains the symbolism that is throughout Rev. Easy to follow study guide with small group questions at the end of each chapter.

I was always hesitant about studying Revelations because of the symbols etc. However, I took this course using this book. All I can say is, wow! An excellent book that gives in depth explanations without being confusing. I will add more of Warren Wiersbe's books to my collection.

My sisters and I have been doing this series of books in our Bible study. I recommend them to to anyone wanting to learn. You read and answer questions. Learn quite a bit.

They must pass the test or things could go really bad. Simon, a mere human thrown into a world of the paranormal, thinks its a nuisance but Peaches is game.I came into this not knowing what to expect. From the synopsis, I had a good feeling it would be fun. It was tons of fun. Simon is still new to the paranormal world and fumbles, a lot. He also tends to run off at the mouth, trying everyone’s patience. But Peaches. Peaches is game for anything as long as there is food and plenty of it.The action doesn’t take long to get going. The moment they enter the training area things go from dicey to a fight to the death. As Simon struggles to use anything available, Peaches actually has to step in to train his human. It was a wild ride from there on and kept me glued to the pages.Did I enjoy this dip into Orlando’s Montague & Strong paranormal urban fantasy series? Yep. Will I read more? You betcha! Would I recommend it? An enthusiastic yes!

This short about Peaches is totally awesome and totally too short! We love that big brute of a Hellhound and we are "jonesing" for him to get his own series! Now, with that said and out of the way, back to the review.Monty, Simons Mage partner, has had it with puppy, Peaches, chewing up his very expensive shoes. Monty calls Death INCARNATE, Ezra, and makes an appointment for Simon and Peaches to go through "Hellhound Training". Needless to say but all Hell breaks loose! While monsters try to kill them, Simon (weaponless!) and Peaches have to find their, very complex, way back to Ezra, or die trying!Loads of action, laughs, and foreshadowing, you simply must read!

I bought this book from Amazon because it sounded interesting. It was interesting but quite confusing since it is a continuance of a series which I have not read one book. I found this story to be rushed as though the author was sure that you had read his other books in the series and so knew who was who. In fact, it took me quite a while to realize that the main character was a male and not a female! The "test" was so quick that it barely seemed to be a test at all for the "hero" and Peaches (her hellhound). Now as a word of warning...I am a 61-year-old woman so maybe I'm too far removed from my youth to thoroughly understand or enjoy this book.

This novella is the next adventure in Peaches and Simon's life. Seems Monty was not happy with how Peaches gently chewed on a pair of his favorite shoes. Peaches' defense was they were old and the angry man does not like old things. Which prompts Monty to call Ezra and set up training for Peaches to make him a proper hellhound.Simon takes Peaches to be trained, but things don't always work out right when training a hellhound. Peaches is at his best, but Simon might need eyedrops.Short but, but a great story, with more info into what makes up a hellhound and what they should fear.Can't wait for more Peaches stories.

If you've ever had a dog, you know what it's like. We bring them into our homes, spoil them, and love them like family. We let them get away with murder. This was the life of Peaches. But, Peaches, while he's definitely mastered puppy-dog eyes, isn't a dog. He's a hellhound and hellhounds require a little extra training to keep all your furniture--and your friends--intact.This is a great addition to the Montague & Strong series. As expected, it answers some questions and fills in some blanks, at the same time opening up a new set of possibilities for future stories.

Enjoyable story but it feels like it was not fleshed out enough - as if rushed to get out with a limit on the number of pages it could have. Interesting idea but really needed to be a longer "short" story with a more detail / context. Otherwise still good writing and fits in with the main story line - just not as well as it seems like it could have. Feels like a lost opportunity.

Finnaly, Peaches is cast in his own story and shows just what he'says capable of - with proper motivation, of course. Simon uses his one and only spell (he really needs to learn to make the magic meat) and is the perfect sidekick for the hellhound that steals every scene. Peaches being sent to Death himself for obedience training? Let'stand nor be fooled here! Jump in for a great short read!

Everyone who has ever had to train a puppy can relate to Simon's dilemma with Peaches, chewing on shoes, begging at the table, transforming into the size of a bus. Ok, well, maybe not everyone, which is why Peaches needs special training, and lots of meat. Which is why, when it's time to train your hellhound, only Death will do. Simon and Peaches certainly get put through their paces, with all of the hilarity, mishaps, and accidental destruction you'd expect from a hellhound in training. The one lesson that we're certain will stick is that meat is life.
